Variational Bayesian inference is a method to approximate the posterior distribution under a Bayesian model analytically. As an alternative to Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, variational inference (VI) produces an analytical solution to an approximation of the posterior but have a lower computational cost compared to MCMC methods. The main challenge of applying VI comes from deriving the equations used to update the approximated posterior parameters iteratively, especially when dealing with complex data. This thesis describes the studies performed on a number of natural uranium dioxide (UO2) specimens to determine a range of reactivities. This work will support the safety case for the long-term disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Canada. Under relevant long-term disposal conditions, water radiolysis could produce oxidizing conditions at the surface of the fuel, potentially leading to fuel corrosion and the release of radionuclides into the groundwater. Host-Pathogen Co-Evolution With Various Transmission Modes Of Infection And Density-Dependent Dynamics, Bita Ghodsi

Pathogens can be transmitted both vertically (from the parent to the offspring) and horizontally. Here, I model the co-evolution of pathogens and their hosts allowing for vertical and horizontal transmission and density-dependent host population growth. My analysis uses evolutionary game theory. I use computational methods to find that increasing vertical transmission does not always result in more benign disease outcomes. Instead, it can lead to higher pathogen-induced mortality. Furthermore, more benign outcomes evolve more readily when horizontal transmission is more profitable for the pathogen, and overall virulence increases as horizontal transmission becomes more profitable. The age and weight at maturation are crucial traits in an organism’s life cycle, influencing its growth, survival, and reproduction. We propose a biphasic energy allocation model, distinguishing pre-maturity and post-maturity, to study the mechanisms of maturation and estimate the age and weight at maturation. This model is parameterized for female lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis). We compare different functions involved in the model, estimate parameters, and do sensitivity analysis. This thesis investigates three research objectives on three different problems: (1) algorithm design for problems in which the input can be grouped into a small number of classes, demonstrated on the high multiplicity strip packing problem; (2) algorithm design for problems with multiple interdependent sub-problems, demonstrated on the thief orienteering problem; and (3) algorithm design using neural networks with few layers, demonstrated on the k-median problem.

(1) The two-dimensional strip packing problem consists of packing in a rectangular strip of width $1$ and minimum height a set of $n$ rectangles, where each rectangle has width $0 < w \leq 1$ and height $0 < h \leq h_{max}$. We consider the high-multiplicity version of the problem in which there are only $K$ different types of rectangles. For the case when $K = 3$, we give an algorithm that produces solutions requiring at most height $\frac{3}{2}h_{max} + \epsilon$ plus the height of an optimal solution, where $\epsilon$ is any positive constant. Discrete homotopy theory is a homotopy theory designed for studying graphs and for detecting combinatorial, rather than topological, “holes”. Central to this theory are the discrete homotopy groups, defined using maps out of grids of suitable dimensions. Of these, the discrete fundamental group in particular has found applications in various areas of mathematics, including matroid theory, subspace arrangements, and topological data analysis.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is an environmental contaminant that has a high biomagnification potential with potent neurotoxic effects. Insectivorous bats may be readily exposed to MeHg through their diet. To test the effect of exposure on torpor and body composition in silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans), I measured total mercury (THg, combination of inorganic and methylmercury) through fur samples and quantitative magnetic resonance analysis, temperature sensitive radio tags, and respirometry data from these bats to quantify body composition and torpor use. Given a measure space and a totally ordered collection of measurable sets, called an ordered core, the notion of a core decreasing function is introduced and used to generalize monotone functions to general measure spaces. The least core decreasing majorant construction, the level function construction, and the greatest core decreasing minorant, already known for functions on the real line, are extended to this general setting. As per international consensus on the best practice for managing used nuclear fuel (UNF), the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) plan to isolate and contain UNF within a multiple-barrier system, underground in a deep geological repository (DGR). In the proposed design, used fuel bundles will be sealed in copper-coated carbon steel used fuel containers (UFCs), encased in blocks of highly compacted bentonite clay, and emplaced ~500-800 m (depending on host rock geology) below ground. The Structural Topic Model (STM) incorporates external information about expected document-topic proportions to enhance the model. Motivated by focus groups, whose transcripts represent text data inherently grouped by session, we propose three extensions to the STM: 1) mean document-topic proportion estimation using a regression with random effects; 2) partitioned estimation of group-specific topic covariance matrices; and 3) a post hoc mixed effects regression on topic prevalence which incorporates latent variable uncertainty into the coefficient estimates. Large language models (LLMs) have recently taken center stage due to their remarkable capabilities, demonstrating human-like reasoning in their generative responses. This thesis explores how LLMs perform on causal reasoning questions and how modifying information in the prompt affect their reasoning. Assessment of consciousness in behaviourally unresponsive patients with critical brain injuries continues to be a challenge. There remains a need for robust tools that can accurately characterize preserved cortical function and predict patient outcomes. In the present study, functional near-infrared spectroscopy is employed in conjunction with graph theory and machine learning to quantify resting-state functional connectivity in 16 acutely brain-injured patients and 23 healthy controls. Results revealed significant channel-level differences between the groups for three graph metrics, including degree, clustering coefficient, and local efficiency. If however semiclassical effects are taken into account, an isolated black hole can be shown to slowly radiate its mass away in a process called evaporation.
