Mathematical Modeling And Numerical Approximations Of Combustion Instability Frequencies And Growth Rates, Harvey B. Ring Iii Aug 2024

Mathematical Modeling And Numerical Approximations Of Combustion Instability Frequencies And Growth Rates, Harvey B. Ring Iii

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents a mathematical model and numerical simulations to determine the resonant frequencies and their associated growth rates for longitudinal modes in a combustion system similar to that found in a rocket engine. The mathematical model, which is applicable to a two-duct system with a thin flame between the two ducts, each of which having constant area and properties, considers the case of axial mean velocity and uses a vibrating wall at the inlet to select the frequency so that all modes may be found. The model is applied to the acoustics equations describing pressure and velocity fluctuations, derived …

The Role Of Sensing Modalities In Shaping Collective Motion And Group Behavior, Poorendra P. Ramlall Jul 2024

The Role Of Sensing Modalities In Shaping Collective Motion And Group Behavior, Poorendra P. Ramlall

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Collective behavior refers to the coordinated movements that emerge from simple interactions between individuals within a group. Traditionally, researchers have modeled these interactions assuming individuals can sense their surroundings in all directions, like having eyes all around their heads. While this is a useful simplification, it does not capture the diverse ways animals actually sense the world. In this thesis, we take inspiration from the natural world, particularly from animals like bats and dolphins that use a combination of hearing and sight to navigate their environments. We explore how combining these sensory cues in a three-dimensional space affects the way …

Modeling Virus Diffusion On Social Media Networks With The Smirq Model, Justin Browning, Arnav Mazumder, Gowri Nanda Jul 2024

Modeling Virus Diffusion On Social Media Networks With The Smirq Model, Justin Browning, Arnav Mazumder, Gowri Nanda

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

As social networking services become more complex and widespread, users become increasingly susceptible to becoming infected with malware and risk their data being compromised. In the United States, it costs the government billions of dollars annually to handle malware attacks. Additionally, computer viruses can be spread through schools, businesses, and individuals’ personal devices and accounts. Malware affecting larger groups of people causes problems with privacy, personal files, and financial security. Thus, we developed the probabilistic SMIRQ (pSMIRQ) model that shows how a virus spreads through a generated network as a way to track and prevent future viruses. Our model is …

Approximating Equilibria In Restricted Games, Jack W. Doyle Jul 2024

Approximating Equilibria In Restricted Games, Jack W. Doyle

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

We consider optimal play in restricted games with linear constraints, and use ϵ-equilibria to find near-equilibrium states in these games. We present three mathematical optimization formulations -- a mixed-integer linear program (MILP), a quadratic program with linear constraints (QP), and a quadratically constrained program (QCP) -- to both approximate and identify these states. The MILP has a short runtime relative to the QP and QCP for large games (a factor 100 faster for |S|=9) and exhibits linear growth in run time, but provides only relatively weak upper bound. The QP and QCP provide a tight bound and the precise value …

Resonant Solutions Of The Non-Linear Schrödinger Equation With Periodic Potential, Arein Duaibes, Yulia Karpeshina Jul 2024

Resonant Solutions Of The Non-Linear Schrödinger Equation With Periodic Potential, Arein Duaibes, Yulia Karpeshina

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The goal is construction of stationary solutions close to non-trivial combinations of two plane waves at high energies for a periodic non-linear Schrödinger Equation in dimension two. The corresponding isoenergetic surface is described for any sufficiently large energy k2. It is shown that the isoenergetic surface corresponding to k2 is essentially different from that for the zero potential even for small potentials. We use a combination of the perturbative results obtained earlier for the linear case and a method of successive approximation.

Asymptotic Formula For Scattering Problems Related To Thin Metasurfaces, Zachary Jermain Jul 2024

Asymptotic Formula For Scattering Problems Related To Thin Metasurfaces, Zachary Jermain

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this work is to develop an asymptotic formula for the behavior of a scattered electromagnetic field in the presence of a thin metamaterial known as a metasurface. By using a carefully chosen Green’s function and the single and double layer potentials we analyze the perturbed scattering problem in the presence of the metamaterial and a background scattering problem. By using Lippman-Schwinger type representation formulas for the two fields we develop the asymptotic formula for the perturbed field. From here we prove the asymptotic formula holds up to a specific error term based on the size of the …

Employing Interactive Architecture Techniques In Architectural Design Methodologies To Retrieve Ancient Egyptian Identity, Dina Elwy Aly Hamed Hussein Dr. Lobna Abd-Allah Abd-Elfattah Agha , Dr. Azza Sobhi Ragab Elsakka

Architectural projects often rely on modern technologies like smart architecture and environmental treatments, neglecting the principles and philosophy that reflect civilization, ideas, culture, and traditions. This leads to short-lived buildings that depend on these technologies without any purpose of preserving them. Technicians must constantly renew technology to improve production and without benefits, as threats of superior artificial intelligence have been warned, that autonomous machines may perform tasks without programmers understanding how to reach this level. Instead of relying solely on environmental or smart technology, we should make technology serve the design idea rather than relying solely on it. Considering this, …

Journal of Engineering Research

Rapid urbanization and overpopulation, along with a lack of green space, led to an increase in air temperature, lowering the rate of thermal comfort in dense urban areas, decreasing air quality, and increasing the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon, particularly in existing cities. As a result, the research aims to reduce the UHI effect and improve the thermal performance of existing Egyptian cities by adopting green infrastructure (GI) principles and demonstrating their effectiveness on the UHI phenomenon. This research concentrates on the UHI phenomenon as one of the environmental issues facing urbanization and includes a review of green infrastructure (GI) …

Journal of Engineering Research

Due to population growth and increased urban activity, there is a rise in waste production, which poses health and environmental risks. Additionally, the extraction and transportation of natural resources to places of employment require significant energy consumption, and the world has therefore moved to seek new alternatives away from traditional construction methods by recycling building materials such as concrete, brick, glass, wood, etc., or using new building materials such as rice straw, plastics, corks, etc., taking into account architectural design. The research is aimed at demonstrating that recycled materials have the potential to perform a better environmental performance by preserving …
