Analysis Of The Quasi-Nonlocal Approximation Of Linear And Circular Chains In The Plane, Pavel Bělík, Mitchell Luskin Jan 2011

Analysis Of The Quasi-Nonlocal Approximation Of Linear And Circular Chains In The Plane, Pavel Bělík, Mitchell Luskin

Faculty Authored Articles

We give an analysis of the stability and displacement error for linear and circular atomistic chains in the plane when the atomistic energy is approximated by the Cauchy-Born continuum energy and by the quasi-nonlocal atomistic-to-continuum coupling energy. We consider atomistic energies that include Lennard-Jones type nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor pair-potential interactions. Previous analyses for linear chains have shown that the Cauchy-Born and quasi-nonlocal approximations reproduce (up to the order of the lattice spacing) the atomistic lattice stability for perturbations that are constrained to the line of the chain. However, we show that the Cauchy-Born and quasi-nonlocal approximations give …

Dea With A Perfect Object: Analytical Solutions, Alexander Vaninsky Jan 2011

Dea With A Perfect Object: Analytical Solutions, Alexander Vaninsky

Publications and Research

For the main DEA models, adding a Perfect Object—that is, a virtual object that has the smallest inputs and greatest outputs—to a collection of actual objects permits obtaining solutions analytically. The paper derives formulas for the solutions and demonstrates that computations with them comprise simple operations with ratios of inputs and outputs while avoiding the use of linear programming (LP) algorithms. A numerical example illustrates the utility of the approach.

Error Control Of Iterative Linear Solvers For Integrated Groundwater Models, Matthew Dixon, Z Bai, C F. Brush, F I. Chung, E C. Dogrul, T M. Kadir Jan 2011

Error Control Of Iterative Linear Solvers For Integrated Groundwater Models, Matthew Dixon, Z Bai, C F. Brush, F I. Chung, E C. Dogrul, T M. Kadir

Business Analytics and Information Systems

An open problem that arises when using modern iterative linear solvers, such as the preconditioned conjugate gradient method or Generalized Minimum RESidual (GMRES) method, is how to choose the residual tolerance in the linear solver to be consistent with the tolerance on the solution error. This problem is especially acute for integrated groundwater models, which are implicitly coupled to another model, such as surface water models, and resolve both multiple scales of flow and temporal interaction terms, giving rise to linear systems with variable scaling. This article uses the theory of “forward error bound estimation” to explain the correspondence between …

Essays On Hedge Fund Replication: Methodological Assessment And Development Of The Factor Approach, Nonlinear Modeling And Policy Perspectives, Guillaume Weisang

2011

This dissertation is concerned with hedge fund replication, a subject of a practical and theoretical importance, both from an investment and a risk management point of view. One of our goals is to extend known methodologies in order to enhance our understanding of an industry that is known for its secrecy and its lack of transparency. A second goal is to contribute to the quantitative finance literature with improved techniques for hedge fund replication. Hedge fund replication (HFR) is approached from the methodological as well as from practical and regulatory perspectives. The first two chapters provide the motivation and the …

Cooper’S Hawk Nest Site Characteristics In The Pineywoods Region, Richard R. Schaefer, D. Craig Rudolph, Josh B. Pierce, Jesse F. Fagan Jan 2011

Cooper’S Hawk Nest Site Characteristics In The Pineywoods Region, Richard R. Schaefer, D. Craig Rudolph, Josh B. Pierce, Jesse F. Fagan

Faculty Publications

Early accounts describe the Cooper’s Hawk (Accipiter cooperi) as a species in decline in much of North America during the early twentieth century (Bent 1937), particularly when in close proximity to humans (Eaton 1914). This decreasing population trend continued to be recognized later in the century in both Texas (Oberholser 1974) and Louisiana (Lowery 1974). Shooting and trapping during the first half of the 1900s, and pesticide use (especially DDT) after World War II are suggested as primary causes of the decline (Henny and Wight 1972, Bednarz et al. 1990). The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1972 and the ban …

Tangential Extremal Principles For Finite And Infinite Systems Of Sets, I: Basic Theory, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Hung M. Phan

Mathematics Research Reports

In this paper we develop new extremal principles in variational analysis that deal with finite and infinite systems of convex and nonconvex sets. The results obtained, unified under the name of tangential extremal principles, combine primal and dual approaches to the study of variational systems being in fact first extremal principles applied to infinite systems of sets. The first part of the paper concerns the basic theory of tangential extremal principles while the second part presents applications to problems of semi-infinite programming and multiobjective optimization.

An Improvement In Centroid Point Method For Ranking Of Fuzzy Numbers, Saeid Abbasbandy, T. Hajjari Jan 2011

An Improvement In Centroid Point Method For Ranking Of Fuzzy Numbers, Saeid Abbasbandy, T. Hajjari

Saeid Abbasbandy

In many applications, ranking of fuzzy numbers is an important component of the decision process. Many authors have investigated the use of fuzzy sets in ranking alternatives and they have studied different methods of raking fuzzy sets. Particularly, the ranking of fuzzy numbers. In a paper by Cheng [A new approach for ranking fuzzy numbers by distance method, Fuzzy Sets and Systems 95 (1998) 307-317], a centroid-based distance method was suggested for ranking fuzzy numbers, both normal and non-normal. The method utilizes the Euclidean distances from the origin to the centroid point of each fuzzy numbers to compare and rank …

Solution Of Fully Fuzzy Linear Systems By St Method, M. Mosleh, M. Otadi, Saeid Abbasbandy

Saeid Abbasbandy

In this paper, we investigate the existence of a positive solution of fully fuzzy linear equation systems where fuzzy coefficient matrix is a positive matrix. This paper mainly discusses a new decomposition of a nonsingular fuzzy matrix, a symmetric matrix times to a triangular (ST) decomposition. By this decomposition, every nonsingular fuzzy matrix can be represented as a product of a fuzzy symmetric matrix S and a fuzzy triangular matrix T.

Solving Fuzzy Linear System By Fuzzy Neural Network And Applications In Economics, M. Otadi, M. Mosleh, Saeid Abbasbandy

Saeid Abbasbandy

In this paper, a novel hybrid method based on fuzzy neu- ral network for estimate fuzzy coefficients (parameters) of fuzzy linear supply and demand function, is presented. Here a neural network is considered as a part of a large field called neural computing or soft computing. Moreover, in order to find the approximate parameters, a simple algorithm from the cost function of the fuzzy neural network is proposed.

Local Fractional Functional Analysis And Its Applications, Yang Xiao-Jun

Xiao-Jun Yang

Local fractional functional analysis is a totally new area of mathematics, and a totally new mathematical world view as well. In this book, a new approach to functional analysis on fractal spaces, which can be used to interpret fractal mathematics and fractal engineering, is presented. From Cantor sets to fractional sets, real line number and the spaces of local fractional functions are derived. Local fractional calculus of real and complex variables is systematically elucidated. Some generalized spaces, such as generalized metric spaces, generalized normed linear spaces, generalized Banach's spaces, generalized inner product spaces and generalized Hilbert spaces, are introduced. Elemental …

Optimal Control Of Switched Autonomous Systems In Microbial Fed-Batch Cultures, Chongyang Liu, Enmin Feng Jan 2011

Optimal Control Of Switched Autonomous Systems In Microbial Fed-Batch Cultures, Chongyang Liu, Enmin Feng

Chongyang Liu

A switched autonomous system is proposed to formulate the fed-batch culture process by taking the switching instants between the feed and batch processes as control variables. To maximize the concentration of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) at the terminal time, an optimal control model subject to our proposed switched autonomous system and continuous state inequality constraints is then presented.Acomputational approach is developed to find the optimal switching instants in two aspects. On the one hand, the constraint transcription and smoothing techniques are applied to dealing with the continuous state inequality constraints; on the other hand, the first and the second derivatives of the …

An Analysis Of Presence Of Long Memory In The Indian Foreign Exchange Market, Anoop Sasikumar Jan 2011

An Analysis Of Presence Of Long Memory In The Indian Foreign Exchange Market, Anoop Sasikumar

Anoop Sasikumar

This paper seeks to analyze the presence of long memory in the Indian foreign exchange market using a family of tests. The study has used Nominal Effective Exchange Rate (NEER) series as the data source to check the possible presence of long memory. Three R/S statistics viz. Hurst, Mandelbrot’s and Lo’s modified R/S statistics as well as two semi-parametric tests viz. Robinson’s Gaussian semi-parametric estimate and Andrews-Guggenberger modified GPH estimator are used for the purpose of analysis. All the results conclusively prove the presence of strong version of long memory in the Indian foreign exchange market.

Kinetics Of The Bray-Liebhafsky Oscillatory Reaction Perturbed By Polymer Supported Cobalt Catalyst, Zeljko D. Cupic

Zeljko D Cupic

The Bray-Liebhafsky (BL) oscillatory reaction generated in the batch reactor at 62-68 degree C was perturbed by cobalt(II)-nitrate, supported on the macroreticular copolymer of poly-4-vinylpyridine with divinylbenzene (Co-PVPDVB). The kinetic data was analyzed of the complex pathways of the hydrogen peroxide decomposition in the examined BL reaction. The obtained results confirm that the kinetics of the BL reaction in the presence Co-PVPDVB comes partially from the Co-catalyst and partially from the macroreticular copolymer support.

Football: An Intransitive Endeavour, Joe Walsh, Ian Timothy Heazlewood Jan 2011

Football: An Intransitive Endeavour, Joe Walsh, Ian Timothy Heazlewood

Joe Walsh

It has long been established that competitions should be structured to give each team a fair chance of winning. The aim of this research paper was, considering similarities of shared parameters between codes, to investigate intransitivity in football codes. Variables effecting probabilistic outcomes of games were identified for the football codes: soccer, gridiron, rugby union, rugby league and touch football. An algebraic probabilistic model for obtaining tactical advantage in individual transition states was developed. Hypothetical teams were constructed in order to test the possibility of intransitive games states. It was clear that intransitivity could logically exist for a variety of …
