Cities around the world fail to meet air quality standards set by the World Health Organization Air Quality Guidelines, which has a significant impact on public health. Purpose: The “story” format used in Scrum ticket writing is confusing to developers and leadsto insufficient ticket content, which lends to miscommunication between team members and administrators, and disrupts workflow from the bottom up. A burgeoning methodology in Technical Writing, Purpose, Audience, Design (PAD) is an alternative ticket format that is easier to teach developers and improves the aforementioned conditions than the existing “story” format. Anthropocene literature features characters and environments grappling with the devastation of climate change. Donna Haraway’s term Chthulucene narrows this category further by exposing the tentacular connections between overpopulation, dependence on material goods, species loss, and other facets of global warming—such as water as a resource. Three novels of the Chthulucene exhibit these connections, centering on the importance of water to both ecologies and personal identity. As seen in the novels, place attachment brings ecology and identity together by forging a stewardship between person and location, often resulting in efforts to defend and preserve a place. This directivity data set for a KEMAR head head-and-torso simulator (HATS) includes head orientations in 14 directions in 5° steps starting from 0° to 40° and then in 10° steps from 40° to 90°. The full spherical measurements followed at an a = 0.97 m radius with the mouth aperture at the spherical center. The sampling density and distribution followed the AES 5° dual-equiangular sampling standard, omitting the south pole (θ = 180°). Thus, each spherical directivity assessment included 36 polar-angle θ samples and 72 azimuthal-angle ϕ samples. The presented data include 22 1/3-octave bands, ranging from 80 Hz …

We focus on the music generation conditional on human emotions, specifically the positive and negative emotions. There is no existing large-scale music datasets with the annotation of human emotion labels. It is thus not intuitive how to generate music conditioned on emotion labels. In this paper, we propose an annotation-free method to build a new dataset where each sample is a triplet of lyric, melody and emotion label (without requiring any labours). Specifically, we first train the automated emotion recognition model using the BERT (pre-trained on GoEmotions dataset) on Edmonds Dance dataset. We use it to automatically ‘`label’' the music …

Adultery and Fidelity in the Lais of Marie de France

Using both literary and historical analysis, I will examine contrasting depictions of adultery and fidelity within the lais written by 12th-century poet Marie de France. A lai is a type of narrative poem, ranging in length from 118 to 1184 lines. Many of Marie de France’s lais follow the literary trope known as courtly love; however, the reader is encouraged to sympathize with different characters depending on the lai. Too little mathematics has been written in prose. Thus we prove here, via a fantasy novellette, that a locally L-bilipschitz mapping f : X → Y between uniformly Ahlfors q-regular, complete and locally compact path-metric spaces X and Y is an L-bilipschitz map when Y is simply connected. The motivation for such a result arises from studying the asymptotic values of BLD-mappings with an empty branch set.

A Fibonacci poem follows the Fibonacci sequence to any length in its count of syllables per line, or words per line, or lines per stanza, or any other countable thing connected with the poem. A Fib is a special case of Fibonacci poem, a poem of 6 lines whose syllable line count follows the first 6 numbers of the Fibonacci sequence: 1; 1; 2; 3; 5; 8. The present collection of Fibs arose out of the Bridges poetry community in response to the Bridges organization’s efforts to make the Bridges 2021 conference more interactive.

Lately, much has been written about the importance of amplifying statistics-related content in the K-12 curricula. This can be viewed in parallel or as an addendum to the existing mathematics curricula in the United States. Conversion of strangers, or proselytizing, is a feature of a range of groups for religious, organizational and other aims. In twelve-step recovery programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, belief in a higher power is a requirement for working the steps to recovery. People are encouraged to find a higher power of their own understanding. This paper presents a model for using mathematics as a higher power, and shows how recovery works with mathematics in that role instead of a more traditional higher power such as God. Mathematical visual poetry is a poetic genre whereby metaphorical expressions are created using mathematical structures. Within the structure, the poetics are understood by the cross-mapping of numerous conceptual domains including visual, lexical, and mathematical. Here I focus on one particular mathematical visual poetic structure: what I call a Similar Triangles Poem or Proportional Poem. A cube can be twisted in a playful manner for visual and algebraic insights. The twisting process and the resulting ruled surfaces can be demonstrated using 3D modeling tools (e.g., GeoGebra® and Autodesk Fusion 360®) or elastic cords on a 3D-printable scaffold. The twisted cube is aesthetically appealing, posing interesting questions that are worthwhile at multiple levels. Algebraically, the volume of the twisted cube is shown to be two-thirds of the reference cube.
