Tpm^Ph Derivative Of Tungsten; Hydrogen-Bonding In 7-Coordinate Cation Complex, Olivia Ryon Simcox May 2024

Tpm^Ph Derivative Of Tungsten; Hydrogen-Bonding In 7-Coordinate Cation Complex, Olivia Ryon Simcox

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Tpm^Ph, or tris(3-phenylpyrazolyl)methane reacts with tungsten hexacarbonyl to form the ligand-metal complex tris(3-phenylpyrazolyl)methane tungsten tricarbonyl, or Tpm^PhW(CO)3. The further complexes of Tpm^PhW(CO)3 and Tpm^PhMo(CO)3 are not known. This project aims to explore how the addition of a phenyl substituent to the pyrazole ring on Tpm impacts the synthesis of [Tpm^PhW(CO)3I]+X– and [Tpm^PhW(CO)3H]+X–. The inclusion of this phenyl substituent may impact the possible hydrogen bonding of then hydrogen contained in the carbon-hydrogen bond. This work aims to explore the extent of hydrogen-bonding of the carbon-hydrogen bond of the Tpm^Ph ligand in cationic metal complexes.

The Synthesis And Characterization Of 9,10-Bis-(Iodoethynyl)Anthracene For 2d Molecular Crystals From Halogen-Bonding, Nehemiah Antoine

Honors Theses

Two-dimensional crystals have unique properties, giving them the potential to develop practical items such as electronics, biomedicine, and sensors. Our goal is to use chemical principles to synthesize molecules that spontaneously form 2D crystals with designed patterns and properties. For this, we will exploit directional, non-covalent interactions to determine what pattern will form in 2D. In this project halogen-bonding will be utilized: halogen-bonding is the interaction between the electrophilic region of a halogen and a nucleophilic region of a Lewis base. We are functionalizing anthracenes with iodine and nitrogen to form halogen bonds that enable the molecules to pack more …

Modeling Sex-Specific Changes In Myocardial Fibrosis, Grace Martin May 2024

Modeling Sex-Specific Changes In Myocardial Fibrosis, Grace Martin

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Heart disease the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Cardiac fibrosis, or accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins in the heart, can occur after a heart attack and increase the risk for further complications. Current treatments for heart disease do not include extracellular matrix regulators, partly due to the complicated signaling network responsible for the production of these proteins. By using a computational model of the signaling network in cardia fibroblasts, the relationship between particular molecules and downstream extracellular matrix production can be examined.

Biological sex is an important factor for cardiac health and …

Development Of A High-Resolution Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy Apparatus For The Study Of Methane And Other Astrochemical Molecules., S M Shah Riyadh May 2024

Development Of A High-Resolution Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy Apparatus For The Study Of Methane And Other Astrochemical Molecules., S M Shah Riyadh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research documents steps towards building a novel spectroscopic technique, namely, cavity-enhanced double-resonance (CEDR) spectroscopy, for investigating methane (CH4) and other molecules with significance in astrochemistry. These efforts focus on tackling the complexities of their ro-vibrational energy levels and the inefficiencies in analyzing vibrational spectra, particularly for molecules with high symmetry and strong intramolecular interactions. In the CEDR spectroscopy, the first photon, generated by a continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator (CW-OPO) locked to a Doppler-free saturation absorption line, excites the molecule from its ground level to a selected excited ro-vibrational (rotational-vibrational) level, e.g., that of the asymmetric CH-stretch mode. …

Chemical Analysis Of Hemp-Infused Supplements Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography And Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Julie A. Milbrand

Forensic Science Master's Projects

Hemp and marijuana consumption in the United States can be dated back many centuries as being an essential component of the medicinal, industrial, and recreational markets while maintaining its extremely controversial status amongst the scientific and political communities. While researchers suggest that the plant in which both hemp and marijuana are derived from, Cannabis Satvia, contains more than 600 chemicals, the vast majority of research has been conducted on cannabinoids, which account for about 60 of them. Major phytochemicals from cannabis include its psychoactive agent, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), and many others. Employing the use …

A Chemical And Historical Analysis Of Beer: Discovering Brewing Styles And Beer Stages, Alexander Taylor '24

Honor Scholar Theses

This interdisciplinary project is designed to explore both the compositional qualities of beer during the brewing process and its impact on society from a cultural, economic, and social viewpoint. Comparing various styles of beer against each other in a historical, societal, and chemical lens allows for a deeper understanding of what creates a beer’s identity, and what makes it different from other styles. Here we analyzed two different styles of beer, a bock lager and a saison ale, in order to determine their chemical composition through their developmental stages to their final product. Based on previously published research and extended …

Mathematical Modeling And Examination Into Existing And Emerging Parkinson’S Disease Treatments: Levodopa And Ketamine, Gabrielle Riddlemoser May 2024

Mathematical Modeling And Examination Into Existing And Emerging Parkinson’S Disease Treatments: Levodopa And Ketamine, Gabrielle Riddlemoser

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease across the world, affecting over 6 million people worldwide. This disorder is characterized by the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons within the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) due to the aggregation of α-synuclein within the brain. Patients with PD develop motor symptoms such as tremors, bradykinesia, and postural instability, as well as a host of non-motor symptoms such as behavioral changes, sleep difficulties, and fatigue. The reduction of dopamine within the brain is the primary cause of these symptoms. The main form of treatment for PD is levodopa, a precursor …

Use Of Molecular Logic Gates For The Tuning Of Chemosensor Dynamic Range, Orhan Acikgoz May 2024

Use Of Molecular Logic Gates For The Tuning Of Chemosensor Dynamic Range, Orhan Acikgoz

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The first molecular logic gates were created in the 1990s; integrating such logic gates into fluorescent chemosensors allowed for the detection of different types of ions in solution. In this study, we have developed a new use of molecular logic gates by having two of the same type of binding site. The two binding sites on a fluorophore that both detect Na+ ions led to an increase in the detection limit compared with the chemosensor with a single binding site. Since the two sodium binding sites create an AND logic gate, two sodium ions are needed to generate a …

Group 3 medulloblastoma is one of the most common pediatric brain cancers. Affecting infants and children, this cancer has the worst prognosis of the medulloblastoma group. Current treatments use surgical resection, radiation, and chemotherapy to afflict the cancer, however no cure has been found. This project aims to model one of the many pathways being investigated in Group 3 medulloblastoma which may be used to synthesize future treatments. Specifically, showing the interconnections between various precursors of BCL-xL, an antiapoptotic protein, and how these factors influence the progression of the disease. Scientific databases were used to find previous research articles which …

N-Methylation Of Amphetamine By Phenylethanolamine N- Methyltransferase: Implications For Chronic Therapeutic Use, Mackenzie Pavlik May 2024

N-Methylation Of Amphetamine By Phenylethanolamine N- Methyltransferase: Implications For Chronic Therapeutic Use, Mackenzie Pavlik

Master's Theses

In current forensic analysis, the presence of methamphetamine in a sample is routinely presumed to reflect methamphetamine abuse. This is due to the expectation that individuals either abusing, or receiving amphetamine for therapeutic purposes (e.g. as treatment for ADHD) will not generate any significant levels of methamphetamine as a product of metabolism. We have hypothesized however, that because amphetamine can serve as a substrate for methylation by phenylethanolamine n-methyltransferase (PNMT), (which will be in equilibrium with the reverse demethylation reaction) some individuals chronically taking amphetamine for therapeutic purposes may generate low levels of methamphetamine that would show up on a …

Argonaute 2 Binding Affinity To Determine Repression Of Mirna-Mrna Pairs, Christina M. S. Karadiakos May 2024

Argonaute 2 Binding Affinity To Determine Repression Of Mirna-Mrna Pairs, Christina M. S. Karadiakos

ALL - Honors Theses

MicroRNAs (miRNA) are a class of small non-coding RNAs that play a key role in gene silencing. miRNAs form an RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) with the argonaute 2 (AGO2) protein in order to control gene expression through silencing messenger RNAs (mRNA). The ability for a miRNA-mRNA complex to fit into AGO2 and form the RISC is based on the location and characteristics of a central bulge, but the mechanism and interactions that lead to a functional RISC remain unknown. Using available experimental data, we modeled complexes composed of a miRNA (miR-34a) and different mRNA sequences inside of AGO2. The resulting …

A Copper-Selective Sensor And Its Inhibition Of Copper-Amyloid Beta Aggregation, Ngoc Kim Nguyen, Bella Poduska, Mia Franks, Manoranjan Bera, Ian Maccormack, Guoxing Lin, Alexander P. Petroff, Samir Das, Arundhati Nag May 2024

A Copper-Selective Sensor And Its Inhibition Of Copper-Amyloid Beta Aggregation, Ngoc Kim Nguyen, Bella Poduska, Mia Franks, Manoranjan Bera, Ian Maccormack, Guoxing Lin, Alexander P. Petroff, Samir Das, Arundhati Nag

Chemistry

Copper is an essential trace metal for biological processes in humans and animals. A low level of copper detection at physiological pH using fluorescent probes is very important for in vitro applications, such as the detection of copper in water or urine, and in vivo applications, such as tracking the dynamic copper concentrations inside cells. Copper homeostasis is disrupted in neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, and copper forms aggregates with amyloid beta (Ab42) peptide, resulting in senile plaques in Alzheimer’s brains. Therefore, a selective copper detector probe that can detect amyloid beta peptide-copper aggregates and decrease the aggregate size has …

Harnessing The Power Of Virtual Reality For Organic Chemistry Education, Jungmin Shin

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Understanding organic chemistry concepts heavily relies on visualization of the geometry of molecules and spatial arrangement of molecules during mechanisms. 2D textbook depictions have their limitations in visualizing the three-dimensionality of organic chemistry. Student learning outcomes could be greatly improved from 3D visualizations of these topics. This project explores the potential of an emerging technology, Virtual Reality (VR), being incorporated as a teaching resource for organic chemistry.

This paper discusses two trials for evaluating the potential of VR as a teaching resource for organic chemistry in select topics of the Diels-Alder reaction and R/S configurations and stereoisomers. The Diels-Alder reaction …

Learning, Optimizing, And Simulating Fermions With Quantum Computers, Andrew Zhao May 2024

Learning, Optimizing, And Simulating Fermions With Quantum Computers, Andrew Zhao

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Fermions are fundamental particles which obey seemingly bizarre quantum-mechanical principles, yet constitute all the ordinary matter that we inhabit. As such, their study is heavily motivated from both fundamental and practical incentives. In this dissertation, we will explore how the tools of quantum information and computation can assist us on both of these fronts. We primarily do so through the task of partial state learning: tomographic protocols for acquiring a reduced, but sufficient, classical description of a quantum system. Developing fast methods for partial tomography addresses a critical bottleneck in quantum simulation algorithms, which is a particularly pressing issue for …

Sustainable Methodologies For Synthesis Of Small Organic Molecules Using Micellar Catalysis., Deborah Sam Ogulu May 2024

Sustainable Methodologies For Synthesis Of Small Organic Molecules Using Micellar Catalysis., Deborah Sam Ogulu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organic synthesis is a critical process in the creation of small molecule pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. However, most methods for synthesizing these small molecules rely on toxic organic solvents as the reaction medium which account for approximately 80% of pharmaceutical waste. Moreover, many catalytic reactions require expensive endangered precious metals like palladium and costly metals. This dissertation presents research that aims to develop sustainable, eco-friendly reaction conditions to address these issues. We developed a ligand-free bimetallic nanocatalyst for the hydrogenation of unsaturated enones. This ligand-free nanocatalyst was prepared from nickel and ppm loading of palladium and was stabilized by harnessing the …

Ligand-Stabilized Sno2 As A High-Performance And Scalable Electron Transport Material For Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells., Sashil Chapagain May 2024

Ligand-Stabilized Sno2 As A High-Performance And Scalable Electron Transport Material For Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells., Sashil Chapagain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the past decade, perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology has attracted significant attention for its low material costs, simple fabrication processes, and impressive photovoltaic performance, with recent power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) surpassing 26%. This advancement marks PSCs as strong competitors to traditional silicon-based photovoltaics. Despite the high efficiency of PSCs, the path to commercialization is hindered by challenges in stability, scalability, and module efficiency. The stability and scalability of PSCs are primarily dependent on the successive charge transfer layers (CTLs) that are interfaced with the perovskite layer. Among CTLs, metal oxide (MOx) CTLs are preferred for their cost-effectiveness, …

Utilizing Metal Ligand Cooperativity To Activate Small Molecules., Christine Burgan May 2024

Utilizing Metal Ligand Cooperativity To Activate Small Molecules., Christine Burgan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problems created from the excessive use of fossil fuels can be approached from two directions: capture the CO2 from the atmosphere or develop alternative energy sources. The current industrial standards for these are environmental and/or health hazards and utilize precious metals, respectively. Metal ligand cooperativity (MLC) has emerged as a promising alternative to using precious metals to activate small molecules. In this dissertation, we focus on a series of metal complexes based on the ligand diacetyl-2-(4-methyl-thiosemicarbazone)-3-(2-hydrazinopyridine) (H2L1) for either hydrogen evolution or CO2 capture. The novel complexes were characterized by 1H NMR, …

Analysis Of Additively Manufactured Inconel 718 Combustion Behavior In Promoted Oxygen Environments, Dominic George Dieguez May 2024

Analysis Of Additively Manufactured Inconel 718 Combustion Behavior In Promoted Oxygen Environments, Dominic George Dieguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Promoted combustion testing is a vital tool for engineers to establish the combustion and flammability characteristics of materials (metallic or otherwise) in oxygen enriched environments. Historically, much of the established data for metallic promoted combustion has been with regards to materials in their cast and wrought forms. However, with the emergence of additive manufacturing as a preferred method of fabrication, the need exists to evaluate how metals in that form behave. Recent testing has demonstrated that even if a metal or alloy is nominally the same with regards to chemistry, flammability between samples in the wrought form can differ significantly …

Synthesis Of Neoglycoproteins As Potential Biomarkers For Chagas Disease And Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Caused By Leishmania (Viannia) Braziliensis, Eileni Rodriguez Gil May 2024

Synthesis Of Neoglycoproteins As Potential Biomarkers For Chagas Disease And Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Caused By Leishmania (Viannia) Braziliensis, Eileni Rodriguez Gil

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Protozoan parasites are responsible for causing numerous diseases in humans and mammals worldwide. Among them are Chagas disease (CD), caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), and tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL), caused by the parasite Leishmania (Viannia). Both diseases coexist in many regions of Latin America, and current hurdles to differentially diagnose them and determine chemotherapy success need to be overcome. CD can be diagnosed by traditional serological tests and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), but disadvantages of these methods are that they may produce false negatives because the antigens used in commercial CD kits are not conserved across all T.cruzi …

A Revised Synthesis Of The Cationic Lipids Dmri And Mlri, Benjamin A. Kostic

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) are an increasingly utilized method of intracellular delivery for nucleic acids. The COVID-19 vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech have used LNP technology to combat the recent global SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, saving millions of lives.1,2 These vaccines consist of a lipid formulation that binds to the anionic phosphate groups of mRNAs and serves as an effective way to transport the nucleic acid across membranes into cells.9The mRNA encodes a viral protein. When introduced to cells, the viral protein is produced so that the immune system then can generate an appropriate antibody response.3 However, this approach …

Effects Of Ecologically Relevant Concentrations Of Nitrate On Behavior In Betta Splendens, Sarah Janson May 2024

Effects Of Ecologically Relevant Concentrations Of Nitrate On Behavior In Betta Splendens, Sarah Janson

Honors College

Nitrate is a ubiquitous pollutant that is becoming more prevalent in both fresh and saltwater environments. Short term effects are often studied, but an organism’s response to stress can change due to whatever the stressor is. In order to research this, a study was run using environmentally relevant nitrate treatments (0 mg/L, 10 mg/L NO3-N, and 100 mg/L NO3-N) to see the effect of nitrate on scototaxis behaviors, a measure of anxiety. This study used Betta splendens because they are easy to rear and have very well documented behaviors. In addition to the scototaxis, the effect of temperature on mortality …

Development Of Novel Immobilized Copper–Ligand Complex For Click Chemistry Of Biomolecules, Rene Kandler, Yomal Benaragama, Manoranjan Bera, Caroline Wang, Rasheda Aktar Samiha, W.M.C. Sameera, Samir Das, Arundhati Nag

Chemistry

Copper-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition click (CuAAC) reaction is widely used to synthesize drug candidates and other biomolecule classes. Homogeneous catalysts, which consist of copper coordinated to a ligand framework, have been optimized for high yield and specificity of the CuAAC reaction, but CuAAC reaction with these catalysts requires the addition of a reducing agent and basic conditions, which can complicate some of the desired syntheses. Additionally, removing copper from the synthesized CuAAC-containing biomolecule is necessary for biological applications but inconvenient and requires additional purification steps. We describe here the design and synthesis of a PNN-type pincer ligand complex with copper (I) …
