Nanoparticles of platinum group elements(Pd, Pt, Rh, Ir, Ru and Os) exhibit intriguing catalytic behaviors that are sensitively dependent upon their particle dimensions, chemical compositions, and surface structures. Platinum group elementbased nanomaterials have been widely utilized for catalyzing a series of important chemical reactions, producing over 90% of chemicals and fuels and accounting for 35% of the world's GDP globally. Reducing the overall particle sizes of the catalysts to the sub-10 nm size regime not only effectively mitigates the cost issues associated with the noble metal-based materials, but also remarkably modifies the surface atomic coordinations and the electronic band energies, …

The background of small molecule activation is discussed in Chapter 1. Carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bond activation and carbon-carbon (C-C) bond formation using transition metal complexes are explained using examples from the literature. Drinking water disinfection is considered one of the greatest scientific achievements of the 20th Century because it significantly reduced the number of deaths related to waterborne diseases. However, in 1974 J.J. Rook discovered that chlorine, a commonly used disinfectant, can react with natural organic matter to form disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Since then, more than 700 DBPs have been identified, with several epidemiological and toxicological studies linking DBPs to several adverse health effects such as bladder and colorectal cancer, adverse birth outcomes, and asthma. Inhibins are heterodimeric ligands within the TGFβ superfamily, comprised of an α-subunit (INHA) and a β-subunit (either INHBA or INHBB) with emergent roles in cancer. Inhibins are biomarkers of disease burden and prognosis in a subset of cancers and utilize the coreceptors betaglycan (TGFBR3) and endoglin (ENG) for physiological or pathological outcomes. Previously, we found inhibin promotes angiogenesis in ovarian cancer however no mechanism of regulation for inhibin expression in cancer has been established. Hypoxia, a driver of tumor growth and metastasis, regulates angiogenic pathways that are targets for vessel normalization and ovarian cancer management. …

The kappa agonist structure–activity relationship around the novel, pyrrolidinyl substituted pyranopiperazine scaffold was developed. More specifically, the dichloroPhenylAcetamide-Pyrrolidinyl-PyranoPiperazine (PAPPP) core A was the focus of our work. The modulation of kappa receptor potency/G-protein activation and arrestin recruitment with respect to changes of the piperazine R group in A was demonstrated. Reduced β2-arrestin recruitment and differential G-protein bias were observed for select analogues. To better understand the subtlety in receptor signaling, analogues were profiled as the resolved enantiomers. People have realized their functionality as p-type semiconductors that provide good hole mobility and conductivity within the materials. In this work, we have synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using pulsed liquid ablation in different medium of growth and later combined with methylene blue (MB) to evaluate its potential as an effective photodynamic therapy agent. A source of bioavailable iron in open oceans stems from aerosols, increasing phytoplankton growth and the sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. These aerosols contain semiconductors, like titanium dioxide, which is known to increase the bioavailability and can trigger photoreduction of Fe3+. Recently, it is suspected that other metals in the aerosols also influence the release of iron. This dataset is in support of Juetten et al., which has been submitted to the Journal of Geophysical Research Biogeosciences for consideration for publication. Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in lakes across elevation gradients is a complex function of topography, climate, vegetation coverage, land use, and lake properties. To examine sources and processing of CDOM from sea level to mountain lakes (3 to 1574 m), we measured CDOM optical properties, lake characteristics, and water quality parameters in 62 freshwater lakes in the Pacific Northwest, USA. This study aims to co-microencapsulate the Ruellia tuberosa L. and Cosmos caudatus K. extracts, with chitosan–sodium tripolyphosphate (Na-TPP) as coating material. α-Amylase inhibition and antioxidant assays were conducted to determine the potential of microcapsules used as antidiabetic agents. The microcapsules were manufactured under the influences of pH, Na-TPP concentration, and stirring time. The optimum microencapsulation conditions were selected based on the highest encapsulation efficiency. The optimum microencapsulation conditions were a pH of 4, Na-TPP concentration of 0.15% (w/v), and stirring time of 60 min. Layered double hydroxide (LDHs) are widely used adsorbents for methylene blue removal. However, LDHs have a perishable structure that cannot be used repeatedly. Modifying LDHs with chitosan produces a strong material with a large surface area for methylene blue adsorption. Adsorption conditions were optimized by determining the adsorption isotherms and the adsorbent regeneration process. Results showed that the adsorption process was balanced in 90 min with maximum adsorption capacities of 86.207 mg/g, 35.336 mg/g, and 98.039 mg/g for Zn/Al, chitosan, and Zn/Al-chitosan, respectively. The adsorption in this study followed the Freundlich isotherm model. Regeneration analysis of the adsorbent showed that …

2,7-disubstituted silafluorenes and germafluorenes, originally designed for OLED applications, are a class of fluorescent dyes that have gained recent interest as probes for bioimaging and as biosensors to monitor cellular dynamics and interactions. Desirable biological probes absorb in the visible region, have high extinction coefficients, high quantum yield and excellent photostability. Here, their spectral properties are investigated under aqueous conditions for relevant biological applications. These molecules display intense blue fluorescence in the solid state and in solution, have high extinction coefficients, and exhibit appreciable solubility in aqueous solution. The paper presents a new method for evaluating the polarity and hydrophobicity of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on the measurement of the DES contact angle on glass. DREAM belongs to the NCS family, and it is involved in several physiological processes mediated by Ca2+ association, which produces changes in its oligomerization state. The mechanism of how Ca2+ binds to DREAM remains unknown. A kinetic study of the binding of Ca2+ to DREAM suggested that DREAM dimerization is a two-step process, the first step( τ1= 8±0.1ms) is associated with the binding of Ca2+ to the monomer, while the second step (τ2 = 3.6 ±0.4 s ) corresponds to a conformation relaxation that leads to the dimerization. An asymmetrical spectral continuum is observed in low-frequency surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (LF-SERS) in the terahertz (THz) region. This background continuum appears as a flat baseline in the Stokes side and a slope in the anti-Stokes side. Analysis shows this asymmetry originates from the different scaling of anti-Stokes and Stokes scattering with respect to the Bose−Einstein distribution. Such asymmetry is readily visible, under room temperature, in the low-frequency THz spectral range. Accounting for this spectral intensity asymmetry reveals the intrinsic continuum background of electronic origin, differing from local normal modes and collective relaxational motions. Given the ease with which a selection can be customized, aptamers can be evolved to function in nearly any chemical environment, making them tailormade for their final application. Cobalt is widely regarded as the most promising interconnect material for 10 nm node and beyond. The development of a chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) slurry suitable for cobalt interconnect is a critical component for the application of cobalt interconnect. As the semiconductor integrated circuits evolve into 7 nm technology and beyond, the resistance of the Cu filling at back-end-of-line interconnects no longer linearly scales with dimension. As a new development direction of integrated circuit chip carrier, etched lead frame has been gradually applied in microelectronics industry in recent years. Since the preparation of the etched lead frame requires the use of multiple layers of non-alkali-resistant photoresist films with specific patterns, and the traditional cyanide silver plating is unable to meet this requirement, making that the development of weakly alkaline cyanide free silver plating process has great significance.
