Two-particle azimuthal correlations have been used to extract reaction plane dispersion free triple-differential cross sections for d, t, and α particles for the midcentral collisions of 84Kr+197Au at E/A=35, 55, and 70 MeV. Both experimental measurements and extrapolations from lower incident energies suggest that rotational flow disappears at E/A≈100 MeV for light charged particles and that reaction plane dispersions introduce large uncertainties in extracting the disappearance of rotational flow.

The impact parameter dependence of light charged particle (p,d,t,α) emission has been studied using an impact parameter selection based on coincident detection of residues or fission fragments. The energy spectra at twelve angles between 20° and 150° have been fit by a multiple moving source parametrization. The angle and energy integrated preequilibrium proton multiplicities decrease with increasing impact parameter in qualitative agreement with a Fermi jet calculation. The preequilibrium d/p and t/p multiplicities increase slowly with increasing impact parameter and are nearly identical at the two bombarding energies. The preequilibrium α/p ratio shows a less consistent dependency on impact parameter …

Single-Head Spin Modes In Frontal Polymerization, Victor M. Ilyashenko, John A. Pojman
Single-Head Spin Modes In Frontal Polymerization, Victor M. Ilyashenko, John A. Pojman
Faculty Publications
The single-head spin mode is the first two-dimensional pattern of self-propagating thermal reaction fronts observed after the planar front loses stability. A "hot spot" is observed to propagate around the periphery of the front. The dynamics of the single-head frontal polymerization regime were studied experimentally, and two novel results were found. The "hot spot" was measured and found to be superadiabatic. The relationship between the rotational velocity and the propagating velocity was found. Experimental data were also compared with the theoretical results based on the linear stability analysis and found to be in a reasonable agreement. (C) 1998 American institute …

Study On Nano Electrode Material Of Lithium Ion Batteries, Jinkua You, Yong Yang, Dong Shu, Shenghui Wu, Yingchun Zhang, Zugeng Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this paper, the structure and morphology of the nano phase electrode materials have been characterized with XRD and TEM. The performances of electrochemical intercalation and deintercalation of lithium ions have been studied by using cyclic voltammograms and galvanostatic charge discharge techniques. The results show that the nano materials posses advantage of micro structure and Li+ ions intercalation performances. The observed high capacity and large charge discharge current density of the nano phase materials seem to have resulted from three kinds of effects: 1) an increase in the space for Li+ ions intercalation; 2) a decrease in the distance for …

Gold Electrodeposition On Microelectrodes, Lihua Xiong, Caihui Shi, Xiaoqin Li, Bingwei Mao
Journal of Electrochemistry
The initial stage electrodeposition behaviors of gold onto glassy carbon and platinum microelectrodes are studied in an acid solution containing AuCl_3using cyclic voltammetry and potential step techniques. The results suggest that gold nucleation on microelectrodes requires a higher driving force with high probability. Within the range of the microelectrode dimension that have been used in the present work, large amount of gold nucleus could be formed at short time scale at overpotentials higher than a threshole value. The It curves from the platinum microelectrode are in consistence with the continuous nucleation model. It has been found that the deosition history …

Abstract Differing with the scanning microelectrode techniques, which scan microelctrode closely to the interface of electrode/electrolyte and make electrochemical imaging in a lateral spatial resolution, the technique of microelectrode with a micron diameter is of very high timeresolution and ratio of signal/noise in electrochemical measurements. The microelectrode technique allows doublelayer capacitance and background current for a microelectrode to be drastically reduced due to the exposed area of a microelectrode is usually 6~8 orders of magnetite lower than that of a conventional electrode with largescale exposed area. Microelectrode was recently developed as a new powerful electrochemical technique and widely used in …

Spectroscopic Investigation Of Ion Transport Mechanisms In Polyacrylonitrile Based Electrolytes, Zhaoxiang Wang, Biying Huang, Rongjian Xue, Xuejie Huang, Liquan Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Raman, IR, X-ray photoelectron (XPS), and NMR spectra of components in polyacrylonitrilebased electrolytes have been studied. It is found that there are strong interactions among the components though different systems show different interaction characteristics. A concept of competition is proposed between the polymer matrix and the plasticizer on associating with the Li~+ ions. By analyzing the important functions of the plasticizer, a possible mechanism of the ions transport in the polymer electrolyte is suggested.

Anchor Effect Of Iron And Cobalt To Platinum On Carbon Substrates, Zidong Wei
Anchor Effect Of Iron And Cobalt To Platinum On Carbon Substrates, Zidong Wei
Journal of Electrochemistry
The cathodic reduction of oxygen is studied on porous carbonbased electrodes carrying platinumiron and/or cobalt alloy catalysts. Electrodes using such electrocatalysts, particularly when used as cathodes in acidic electrolytes, remain stable for longer periods. The cathodic polarization of oxygen reduction on such electrodes is 20 mV to 40 mV lower than that on the conventional electrode on which only platinum alone is used as an electrocatalysts. An accelerated aging test (AAT) is used to evaluate the corrosion resistance and sintering resistance of each catalyst. The dissolution of the catalyst in the AAT filtrate is analysed and provides a measure of …

The Time Dependent Red Shift Phenomenon Of Visible Electroluminescence Of Porous Silicon, Rongqiu Wang, Jingjian Li, Shengmin Cai, Zhongfan Liu
Journal of Electrochemistry
The electroluminescence (EL) of ntype porous silicon (PS) in a persulphate solution under cathodic polarization was studied. A significant red shift in the luminescence spectra with the increase of polarization time, as well as a blue shift with the increase of cathodic polarization, have been found. FTIR, MicroRaman, AFM and photoelectrochemical techniques have been used to investigate the structure of PS before and after the electroluminescence emission. All these results show that the surface of PS has been oxidized by the persulphate during the EL emission, and accompanied by the stripping of small silicon nanocrystallite, which leades to the red …
Electrochemical Impedance Of Molten Salts Induced Hot Corrosion, Chaoliu Zeng, Weitao Wu, Jianqing Zhang
Electrochemical Impedance Of Molten Salts Induced Hot Corrosion, Chaoliu Zeng, Weitao Wu, Jianqing Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Electrochemical impedance technique was employed to study corrosion behaviors of Ni-3Al, IN100 and IN738 alloys in molten (Na, K, Li)_2SO_4 at 700 ℃. The Nyquist plots for Ni-3Al and IN100 alloys have the characteristics of diffusioncontrolled reaction. But, the corrosion reaction for IN738 alloy is not controlled by the diffusion of oxidants. The equivalent circuits were proposed, and the parameters in circuits were also calculated. Ni-3Al and IN100 alloys suffer from catastrophic corrosion due to the formation of a porous corrosion layer. IN738 alloy has excellent corrosion resistance because of the formation of a protective oxide scale.

Imaging The Molecular Dimensions And Oligomerization Of Proteins At Liquid/Solid Interfaces, Mark Waner, Martha Gilchrist, Melvin Schindler, Marcos Dantus
Mark J. Waner
Individual Concanavalin A (ConA) molecules have been imaged at the liquid/solid interface with an atomic force microscope (AFM). Three-dimensional sizing with very high resolution (<5 Å) has been obtained by a novel approach based on height distributions, which avoids the tip convolution effects which normally affect scanning probe microscopy techniques. Each height measurement correlates to a particular molecular orientation on the surface. A large number of such measurements provide a statistical ensemble of orientations. The complete height distribution reflects the three-dimensional size of the protein sample and hence its tertiary and quaternary structure. A surface adsorption and orientation model, based on a minimization of surface adsorption energy, is proposed. This model is in good agreement with the observed height distribution of Con A molecules at the liquid/solid interface. Analysis of Con A and succinylated Con A molecules on mica demonstrates that Con A dimers are the prevalent species at the liquid/solid interface. This is in contrast to the tetrameric organization of Con A normally observed in solution. The new possibilities opened by height distribution analysis on the physical characterization of biomolecules at interfaces are also discussed.

Cyclic Deformation Behavior Of High-Purity Titanium Single Crystals: Part Ii. Microstructure And Mechanism, Xiaoli Tan, H. Guo, H. Gu, C. Laird, N. D. H. Monroe
Xiaoli Tan
Strain-controlled cyclic tests have been conducted on high-purity titanium single crystals with different orientations. The fatigue mechanisms of the titanium crystals were studied by means of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). It was found that single slip lines, wavy slip lines, double slip lines, twins, and associated slip lines occurred in differently oriented single crystals. A new type of fractographic morphology, parallel traces, was observed. Dislocation patterns and cyclic twins, as well as the mechanical response, were analyzed. The dependence of the deformation mechanisms on the orientations of the single crystals is discussed.

Randomly oriented single crystals of high-purity titanium were prepared by strain annealing and were subjected to multiple-step fatigue testing under strain-controlled conditions, in order to determine their cyclic stress-strain curves (CSSCs). These were found to fall into three groups, depending on orientation and the extent of slip and twinning. For those crystals oriented for single prismatic slip, a plateau was observed in the CSSCs, persistent slip bands (PSBs) occurred, and the plateau stress was 38 MPa. In a second group, oriented for prismatic slip but for which cross-slip and twinning was favored, the plateau was suppressed and the flow stresses …

The Mössbauer spectra of Nd6Fe13X, where X is Si, Cu, Ag, and Au, have been measured between 80 and 500 K. A model corresponding to a basal alignment of the magnetic moments leads to excellent, internally consistent, fits for the Cu, Ag, and Au compounds. The resulting temperature dependences of the spectral hyperfine parameters are uniform and reveal for each Fe site the expected correlations between the isomer shift and the Wigner-Seitz cell volume and the hyperfine field and the number of Fe near neighbors. For Nd6Fe13Si, a different model must be …
