Calcium Metabolismn In Volvox Carteri, Bridget Anne Neville
Calcium Metabolismn In Volvox Carteri, Bridget Anne Neville
Honors Theses
Calcium metabolism is involved in many ways in the cellular activities of the colonial green alga, Volvox carteri. Various drugs that are known in other systems to cause specific changes in calcium metabolism, gave rise to various visible metabolic effects in this study. These effects provide evidence for calcium's role in Volvox growth and development and in its cytoskeleton. Another way that calcium exerts its effect on Volvox is by acting as a second messenger in a G-protein/inositol phosphate signal transduction pathway.
This study also supports the fact that cytoskeletal components are important for development in Volvox. Both microtubules and …

Construction Of Gold Micro-Bead Ultramicroelectrodes, Deon T. Miles, Andrew Knedlik, David O. Wipf
College of Arts and Sciences Publications and Scholarship
A new way to construct small electrodes by the use of metal micro-beads is described. Gold beads of 1.5 to 3.0 mm diameter were used to construct inexpensive and disposable microelectrodes with overall structural diameters of £ 6 mm and electrode diameters of £ 5 mm. The voltammetric response of these electrodes is consistent with existing theory and the electrodes exhibited the sigmoidal waves expected at ultramicroelectrodes.

Efficient Implementation Of Image Compression-Postprocessing Algorithm Using A Digital Signal Processor, Nadir Sinaceur
Dissertations and Theses
In this thesis, an attempt has been made to develop a fast way to implement a post-processing algorithm for image compression. All the previous tests for this postprocessing algorithm, which we will present, have been only software based and did not consider the time parameter.
For this purpose a new algorithm is used to compute the 2-D DCT transform. This change made the process a lot faster on a Spare 5 workstation. We have then decided to further increase the speed of the post-processing scheme by implementing it on the ADSP21020 chip.
The results show that such a chip can …

The generation of sulfuric acid aerosols in aircraft exhaust has emerged as a critical issue in determining the impact of supersonic aircraft on stratospheric ozone. It has long been held that the first step in the mechanism of aerosol formation is the oxidation of SO2 emitted from the engine by OH in the exhaust plume. We report in situ measurements of OH and HO2 in the exhaust plumes of a supersonic (Air France Concorde) and a subsonic (NASA ER-2) aircraft in the lower stratosphere. These measurements imply that reactions with OH are responsible for oxidizing only a small fraction of …

Antifungal Natural Products From Medicinal Plants Of Pakistan, Atta Rahman, M. I. Choudhary
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A number of diseases in humans, animals, insects and plants are caused by pathogenic fungi. Several fungi also produce toxins in foods and can cause poisoning. Antifungal compounds are therefore important both for controlling serious fungal diseases of animals and plants, and for preserving food and other organic materials against attack by fungi. Our work on antifungal phytochemicals of medicinal plants has resulted in the isolation of a number of interesting compounds. The agar diffusion method was used to determine the antifungal activity of the pure isolates and extracts against a number of highly pathogenic fungi. The structures of the …

Dissociation Dynamics Of Small Carbon Clusters, Ersin Yurtsever, Nuran Elmaci
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The dissociation dynamics of small carbon clusters is studied by classical trajectory analysis. A large number of initial conditions are chosen to analyze the effects of the energy, angular momentum and the initial geometry of the cluster. The dissociation times, decay rate constants, kinetic energy of the dissociating atoms and the geometrical structure of the remaining part of the clusters are computed from microcanonical sampling of the phase space. Distributions of these properties as well as the possibilities of various fragmentation channels are presented.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose was converted into microspheres by crosslinking with aluminum chloride. Various microsheres with different amounts of crosslinker, biopolymer of various concentrations and molecular weights, and with different pesticide (Aldicarb) contents and pesticide to polymer ratios were prepared. The pesticide encapsulation efficiencies and aldicarb release kinetics of the resultant microcapsules were investigated. It was possible to modify the release behaviour by varying the above parameters and to have drug release with half-lives longer than 100 hours in aqueous media. The release kinetics were described by first order and zero order kinetics.

Kinetics Of Autoxidative Polymerization Of Sunflowerseed Oil, Hüseyin Topallar, Yüksel Bayrak, Mehmet İşcan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The rates of polymerization of unhydrogenated and hydrogenated sunflowerseed oils were measured under atmospheric conditions in the various containers (glass, PET and metal). Polymerization rates showed a strong dependence on the degree of unsaturation and the light transmittance of the containers. The average molecular weights of polymerized oils were determined by viscosity measurements. The relationship between viscosity and average molecular weight was determined. It is seen that unhydrogenated sunflowerseed oil has a higher polymerization rate than hydrogenated oil samples in a glass container and they has higher viscosity values.

Apocarbonic Anhydrase-Enzymatic Determination Of Zinc In Fruit Juices, Ayşe Karagölge, Nazan Demi̇r, Yaşar Demi̇r, İrfan Küfrevi̇oğlu
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In this study, a new enzymatic method for determining trace amount of zinc was employed on ten different fruit juices. The basis of the enzymatic method is that apocarbonic anhydrase regains its activity in proportion to the Zn^{2+} existing in a solution. Thus, the more activated the enzyme is in the medium, the higher the Zn^{2+} concentration in the solution will be. For this purpose, bovine carbonic anhydrase was purified from erythrocyte hemolisate by affinity chromatography. The Zn^{2+} bound to the enzyme was removed by of the purified enzyme against the solution of pyridine-2-6-dicarboxylic acid. Thus 100\% purified enzyme was …

Thermodynamics Of Dissociation Of Strontium, Barium And Nickel Caproates In Water, Hüseyin Topallar, Yüksel Bayrak, Mehmet İşcan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The critical micellar concentration (CMC) and thermodynamic parameters (heat \DeltaH_d, free energy \DeltaG_d, and entropy \DeltaS_d, of dissociation) of aqueous solutions of strontium, barium and nickel caproates were determined by conductivity measurements. A Kraus and Bray-type expression was used to evaluate molecular conductance at infinite dilution and theromdynamic parameters. The results confirm that CMC remains unaffected by temperature in the range of 25-55^{\circ}C, and show that the dissociation of soaps is an exothermic reaction and nonspontaneous.
