Semiempirical Determination Of Molecular Motions Associated With Phonon Modes In Molecular Crystals, K.M. White, Craig J. Eckhardt
Craig J. Eckhardt Publications
An approach using piezomodulated Raman scattering is presented which permits determination of the molecular motions associated with the eigenmodes of molecular crystals. When coupled with a lattice dynamical calculation for the eigenmodes, the experiment can be used to validate the calculation. The case of 1,2,4,5-tetrabromobenzene is treated and it is shown that the phase relations of the piezomodulated Raman signals confirm the calculated eigenmodes. Infrared Spectroelectrochemical Measurements Of The Electrochemical Double Layer: Using Carbon Monoxide As A Double Layer Probe Molecule, Andrea Russell, Stanley Pons, Mark Anderson
Mark R. Anderson
The utility of infrared spectroelectrochemical measurements to provide information about the electrochemical interface has been previously demonstrated. The use of small adsorbate molecules as probes of the interface has only recently been investigated. The infrared spectroscopic behavior of adsorbed carbon monoxide in the presence of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, and ethylene glycol as well as in alcohol/water binary solvent mixtures is presented. Changes in the Stark tuning rate for the adsorbed CO are correlated with solvent dipole reorganization in methanol, ethanol, and n-propanol. No change was observed for ethylene glycol or isopropanol. For the binary mixtures, a dramatic change in …

Determination Of The Thermal Stability Of Perfluoroalkylethers, Larry S. Helmick, William R. Jones Jr
Determination Of The Thermal Stability Of Perfluoroalkylethers, Larry S. Helmick, William R. Jones Jr
Science and Mathematics Faculty Publications
The thermal decomposition temperatures of several commercial and custom synthesized perfluoroalkylether fluids were determined with a computerized tensimeter. In general, the decomposition temperatures of the commercial fluids were all similar and significantly higher than those for custom synthesized fluids. Correlation of the decomposition temperatures with the molecular structures of the primary components of the commercial fluids revealed that the stability of the fluids is not affected by intrinsic factors such as carbon chain length, branching, or cumulated difluoroformal groups. Instead, correlation with extrinsic factors revealed that the stability may be limited by the presence of small quantities of thermally unstable …

Our coastal enviornments have become the invariable recipient of petroleum and petroleum wastes. Demands for petroleum products coupled with a lack of economic incentive to recycle waste oil, will increase the probability of greater concentrations of petroleum derived hyrdrocarbons entering our estuaries (CEQ Report, 1983).
Studies Of Nitro-Pah On Ambient Air Particulate Matter, Yadan Wang Chen
Studies Of Nitro-Pah On Ambient Air Particulate Matter, Yadan Wang Chen
Theses
A rapid, simple method for routine trace analysis of four isomeric nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAH) (1-nitropyrene, 2-nitropyrene, 2-nitrofluoranthene and 3-nitrofluoranthene) in ambient air particulate matter is described. Two types of air particle sample (TSP and IP10) were collected and particle extracts were prefractionated by thin layer chromatography and the appropriate zones of interest analyzed by reversed-phase HPLC with UV and fluorescence detection. The study of Zn/Si post-column reaction chamber and oxygen scrubber for catalytic reduction of target compounds is also described. Six nitro-PAH compounds were identified in TSP and five in IP10 air particle samples. The results of identification and …
Synthesis Of Strained Lactams And Study Of Their Energetics And Bonding, Jung-Chou Tsai
Synthesis Of Strained Lactams And Study Of Their Energetics And Bonding, Jung-Chou Tsai
Theses
In order to measure nitrogen and oxygen ionization energies of planar and nonplanar lactams, four compounds were synthesized successfully. The comparison of these ionization energies provides a qualitative insight into how the charge distribution of strained lactams varies with molecular geometry. Of special interest was the different ability of amides to exhibit resonance, monitored most sensitively by the core electron energy of nitrogen in the compounds. The nitrogen core (1s) ionization energies for the two nonplanar amides, 1,3-di-tert-butyl aziridinone (405.00 ev) and 1-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-2-one (405.47) each having pyramidal nitrogens, indicated a nitrogen more negative than that in the comparable planar amide. …

Production of Canola in medium rainfall zones offers the opportunity for a rapid expansion of the industry. However presently recommended varieties take too long to mature for the area's shorter growing season. The Stage 2 trials assess Canola lines selected on the basis of earliness from the remnants of Dr Roy's now defunct rapeseed breeding programme as well as selections from Eastern States breeding programmes. The trials arc conducted at three sites to account for environmental effects on cultivar …
