Single And Double Nucleophilic-Addition To Coordinated Pi-Hydrocarbons - Manganese-Mediated Functionalization Of Arenes, Robert D. Pike, D. A. Sweigart

Arts & Sciences Articles

A range of carbon-donor nucleophiles add to the arene ring in (arene)Mn(CO)2L+ cations to give neutral cyclohexadienyl complexes that liberate monofunctionalized arenes upon oxidative removal of the metal. Treatment of the cyclohexadienyl complexes with the nitrosonium salt NOPF6 affords cationic metal nitrosyl complexes that are attacked by a second nucleophile to give cis- and trans-difunctionalized 1,3-cyclohexadienes. When the metal center is chiral, this procedure provides a route to enantiomerically pure cyclohexadienes. 1. Introduction 2. Mechanism of Nucleophilic Addition 3. Single Nucleophilic Addition 4. Double Nucleophilic Addition 5. Conclusions

Structure Of Ba2cu(Bo3)2, Robert W. Smith, Douglas A. Keszler

Chemistry Faculty Publications

As part of our program in the synthesis and characterization of new solid-state borates, we recently synthesized the polymorphic compound Sr2Cu(BO3)2 (Smith & Keszler, 1989) which undergoes a first-order phase transition from a low-temperature form to a high-temperature form at 1073 K. The high-temperature beta form exhibits larger coordination numbers for the Sr atoms and a substantial rearrangement of the copper borate network relative to that of the low-temperature... form.

Insecticides Based On Differences In Metabolic Pathways, Richard T. Mayer, G N. Cunningham, John T. Gupton Jan 1990

Insecticides Based On Differences In Metabolic Pathways, Richard T. Mayer, G N. Cunningham, John T. Gupton

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Insects have been major pests of humankind at least since the beginning of recorded history. To this day insects continue to cause problems in domestic, agricultural, and health situations. It is no wonder that people have continually sought new solutions to controlling insect pests. Even when new control methods are discovered and established, insects evolve into resistant species so that the method is only of real value for a few brief years. Modern science and technology are now enabling scientists to tear away the fabric that has so long masked physiological and biochemical events critical to insects. Armed with this …

Design Of A Viscometer Using Magnetostriction Of Ferromagnetic Probes, Subhendra Nath Sarkar Jan 1990

Design Of A Viscometer Using Magnetostriction Of Ferromagnetic Probes, Subhendra Nath Sarkar

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

On-line measurement of viscosity of process liquids at process temperature is difficult though industrially very important. A viscometer is designed which can do this up to about 300 °C almost on-line within about 1-8% accuracy except for very viscous liquids like glucose. It uses a ferromagnetic probe designed to mechanically vibrate in the ultrasonic frequency range. An excitation coil sends repeated excitation current pulses to induce mechanical vibration in the probe tip. When placed in a process fluid, the vibration amplitude is damped due to the viscosity of the fluid, and the damped vibration is sensed by Faraday's principle by …

Characterization Of Organic Sulfur Compounds In Coals And Coal Macerals, Stephen R. Palmer, Edwin J. Hippo, Michael A. Kruge, John C. Crelling Jan 1990

Characterization Of Organic Sulfur Compounds In Coals And Coal Macerals, Stephen R. Palmer, Edwin J. Hippo, Michael A. Kruge, John C. Crelling

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Peroxyacetic acid oxidation has been used to investigate the type and distribution of organic sulfur species in samples of vitrinite, sporinite and inertinite, separated from the Herrin No.6 and an Indiana No.5 coal seam. It was established that organic sulfur species were selectively preserved during oxidation and their analysis led to some of the first sulfur-33 NMR spectra obtained for coal. The effects of maceral separation processes on model compounds were also studied. Results from our studies support the following conclusions: 1). Different macerals have different distributions and types of organic sulfur species. 2). Organic sulfur compounds in coal occur …

Intermolecular Potential Of The Methane Dimer And Trimer, M. M. Szczesniak, G. Chalansinski, S. M. Cybulski, Steve Scheiner Jan 1990

Intermolecular Potential Of The Methane Dimer And Trimer, M. M. Szczesniak, G. Chalansinski, S. M. Cybulski, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The Heitler–London (HL) exchange energy is responsible for the anisotropy of the pair potential in methane. The equilibrium dimer structure is that which minimizes steric repulsion between hydrogens belonging to opposite subsystems. Dispersion energy, which represents a dominating attractive contribution, displays an orientation dependence which is the mirror image of that for HL exchange. The three‐body correction to the pair potential is a superposition of HL and second‐order exchange nonadditivities combined with the Axilrod–Teller dispersion nonadditivity. A great deal of cancellation between these terms results in near additivity of methane interactions in the long and intermediate regions.

Substituent Effects On The Electronic Spectroscopy Of Tryptophan Derivatives In Jet Expansions, John R. Cable, Michael J. Tubergen, Donald H. Levy Jan 1990

Substituent Effects On The Electronic Spectroscopy Of Tryptophan Derivatives In Jet Expansions, John R. Cable, Michael J. Tubergen, Donald H. Levy

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Electronic excitation spectra of seven tryptophan derivatives entrained in a supersonic expansion have been recorded using both resonantly enhanced two-photon ionization and laser induced fluorescence. Two derivatives, tryptophan amide and tryptophan methyl amide, were found to have substantial low frequency vibrational progressions in their excitation spectra, yet in both compounds this behavior was apparent in only one conformer. Other derivatives did not display as much vibronic activity. Conformers which had vibrational progressions were found to emit in a broad band far to the red of excitation. All other conformers were found to fluoresce most strongly in resonance with excitation. The …

Indirect Photometric Chromatography Of Inorganic And Organic Anions Using Benzoate As An Eluent, Shahab A. Shamsi Jan 1990

Indirect Photometric Chromatography Of Inorganic And Organic Anions Using Benzoate As An Eluent, Shahab A. Shamsi

Masters Theses

For many years the determination of common inorganic and organic anions was hindered by the lack of adequately sensitive analytical techniques. The determination of these anions was laborious and time consuming (e.g. titration, precipitaion, gravimetric analysis etc.). Because of the development of high-performance liquid chromatography, the anion exchange separation of simple inorganic and organic anions is now possible. Now, there are a broad and ever-increasing array of chromatographic methods supplanting these older chemical methods. However, detection is still a problem, but indirect detection provides a practical route for the detection of non-chromophoric inorganic and organic anions.

This dissertation describes the …

Biological Activity And Conformational Analysis Of Nikkomycins And Their Analogs, Eduardo Krainer Jan 1990

Biological Activity And Conformational Analysis Of Nikkomycins And Their Analogs, Eduardo Krainer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Nikkomycins and polyoxins are peptidyl nucleoside antibiotics produced by Streptomyces species. They are potent inhibitors of chitin synthetases from pathogenic fungi, and polyoxins have been used in Japan for many years as agricultural fungicides and for insect control. Since chitin synthetase is not found in mammals and both families of antibiotics are not toxic, these inhibitors are potentially attractive for clinical use. Unfortunately these compounds seem to have only a fungistatic action, and they are not used clinically at present.

A procedure for efficiently obtaining nikkomycins X and Z of very high purity from crude antibiotic is described. These nikkomycins …
