The preparation of Hx TaS2 (0 < x < 0.87) is described. The compounds are only marginally stable at room temperature, slowly evolving H2S and H2 (and possibly Hp in air). Magnetic susceptibility data show that a low temperature transformation in 2H ... TaS2 (at so•K) is suppressed with the addition of hydrogen, and· at the same time the superconducting transition temperature T c rises from 0.8 to ~4.2•K at x = 0.11. Heat capacity measurements near this concentration show the superconductivity to be a bulk effect. Finally, by correlation of this data with susceptibility and T c measurements in other intercalation compounds, we suggest that the rise of T c (at low electron transfer) is due to suppression of the low temperature transformation and not due to an excitonic mechanism of superconductivity.

Properties Of Intercalated 2h-Nbse2, 4hb-Tas2 And 1t-Tas2, S. F. Meyer, R. E. Howard, G. R. Stewart, Juana Vivó Acrivos, T. H. Geballe Jan 1975

Properties Of Intercalated 2h-Nbse2, 4hb-Tas2 And 1t-Tas2, S. F. Meyer, R. E. Howard, G. R. Stewart, Juana Vivó Acrivos, T. H. Geballe

Juana Vivó Acrivos

The layered compounds 2H-NbSe, 24Hb-TaS, 2and 1T-TaS2 have been intercalated with organic molecules; and the resulting crystal structure, heat capacity, conductivity, and superconductivity have been studied. The coordination in the disulfide layers was found to be unchanged in the product phase. Resistance minima appear and the superconducting transition temperature is reduced in the NbSe2 complex. Conversely, superconductivity is induced in the 4Hb-TaS2 complex. Corresponding evidence of a large change of the density of states, negative for 2H-NbSe2 and positive for 4Hb-TaS2, was also observed upon intercalation. The transport properties of all the intercalation complexes show a pronounced dependence upon the …

Locating The St. Louis Urban Plume At 80 And 120 Km And Some Of Its Characteristics, J. F. Stampfer, J. A. Anderson Jan 1975

Locating The St. Louis Urban Plume At 80 And 120 Km And Some Of Its Characteristics, J. F. Stampfer, J. A. Anderson

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The feasibility of locating the urban plume of a moderately large urban area, as far as 120 km downwind, is shown. The method utilizes a single engine aircraft and aerosol instrumentation. A summary of the data obtained from 34 flights, during an 8-month period, is presented and the problems involved in interpreting the data are discussed. These difficulties include nonuniform background levels outside the plume, changing relative humidity, low wind speeds and stable atmospheric layers. The plume was characterized by concentrations of small particles (0.15 < r < 0.3 μm) ca. 1.5 times that in background air and concentrations of large particles (0.3 < r < 1.3 μm) usually greater than twice that in the background. The ratio of the concentrations of small particles to large particles in the plume was about one-half of that in the background. © 1975.

Nucleophilic Substitution At Phosphorus: Phosphate Thioesters, Ronnie L. Wilde Jan 1975

Nucleophilic Substitution At Phosphorus: Phosphate Thioesters, Ronnie L. Wilde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It was my objective to try to determine the mechanism of nucleophilic substitution at phosphorus in monothiophosphate triesters and to apply what I learn to the other phosphate systems. I also tried to obtain more data to show that the Lewis acid-base type complex through the phosphoryl oxygen is existent and does influence the reaction.

Tetrazoline Chemistry, Norman Wallace Rokke Jan 1975

Tetrazoline Chemistry, Norman Wallace Rokke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It was of interest to investigate the chemistry of some tetrazolines since they might be sources of heteroatomic analogues of trimethylenemethane. In addition, they might provide alternate means of synthesis of small ring compounds such as diaziridinones and diaziridineimines. New compounds which were prepared are 1-(2,6-dimethylphenyl) tetrazoline-5-one, 1-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-4-methyltetrazoline-5-one, l-phenyl-4-methyl-5-iminotetrazoline, l-phenyl-4-methyl-5- methyliminotetrazoline, and l-phenyl-4-methyl-5-methyliminotetrazoline methiodide. The mass spectra of the tetrazolines investigated are characterized by ring fragmentations which are helpful in determining their structure. In addition, fragmentation represents one of the few examples of a retro-1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction initiated by electron impact. The monosubstituted tetrazolines are thermally unstable. The course of …

Hemorrhagic Component Of Northern Copperhead Venom, David Hill Jan 1975

Hemorrhagic Component Of Northern Copperhead Venom, David Hill

Honors Theses

The major hemorrhagic component of northern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen) venom was partially purified by ion exchange and molecular sieve column chromatography. TAME and Phospholipase enzymatic activities were shown to be unrelated to hemorrhage. BAEE and procoagulant activities appear to be associated. Hide powder activity seems to correlate with hemorrhagic activity. Both show metal and disulfide dependences.

The northern copperhead, (Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen) is commonly found in forests from Massachusetts to Illinois, and in highlands as far south as Georgia and Alabama.

The venom of the northern copperhead has been reported to contain several en- zymatic activities as well as …

Mechanistic Studies Of Alkylation Of Cobalt(I) By Cyclobutyl Derivatives, Hao Ku Jan 1975

Mechanistic Studies Of Alkylation Of Cobalt(I) By Cyclobutyl Derivatives, Hao Ku

Masters Theses

A study was initiated on the hypothesis, by Ugi and co-workers, that cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, and cyclopentyl electrophiles might under go nucleophilic substitution reactions with retention of configuration.

The synthesis of benzocyclobutenol and 2-phenylcyclobutyl tosylate is described. The reactions of these tosylates with cobalt(I) "supernucleophiles" gave low yields of products which have not been purified sufficiently for assignment of stereochemistry.

Reaction of cyclopentyl tosylate and phenylethyl tosylate with the "supernucleophiles" cobaloxime(I) and cobalt(salen)(I) is discussed for the advance of future work.

The Intramolecular Torsional Potential And Dielectric Properties Of 2,3-Butanedione, Gevert H. Meyer Jan 1975

The Intramolecular Torsional Potential And Dielectric Properties Of 2,3-Butanedione, Gevert H. Meyer

Masters Theses

Dipole moment measurements have been carried out on 2,3-butanedione in solution, pure liquid, and the vapor phase. A dipole moment of 1.03 ± .01 Debye was observed for dilute solutions of 2,3-butanedione in carbon tetrachloride. Pure liquid samples exhibit an anomalous dipole of 1.56 ± .01 Debye. The following results were obtained for vapor phase measurements: 1.04, 1.07, 1.08, 1.11, and 1.17 ± .01 Debye at 310.15, 350.15, 370.15, 431.70 and 472.10 ± .02°K respectively.

The acetyl torsional potential was characterized from the observed temperature dependence of dipole moment. This torsional mode was described by a two-parameter potential function: V(Ø) …

Zwitterionic Carbonyl Halide Complexes Of Tungsten, Dragoslav Marcovich Jan 1975

Zwitterionic Carbonyl Halide Complexes Of Tungsten, Dragoslav Marcovich

Masters Theses

The first carbonyl halide zwitterionic complexes have been synthesized and are of the type cis- (OC)4XWPPh2(CH2)nPPh2R in which X is Cl, Br, or I, n is 1 or 2, and R is an alkyl group. The complexes were prepared by the reaction […]. The temperature of the reaction must be carefully controlled since the decomposition point of the product is only 10°C higher than that of the reactant.

The zwitterionic complexes are sensitive to light in solution but are insensitive to light in the solid state. Unlike carbonyl halide complexes of the …

Studies Of Acetylcholinesterase In Synaptosomes, Syed Abbas Rizvi Jan 1975

Studies Of Acetylcholinesterase In Synaptosomes, Syed Abbas Rizvi

Masters Theses

Acetylcholinesterase from rat brain was studied in crude homogenates, partially purified enzyme fractions, and in synaptosomes, to observe modification of the enzyme as a consequence of the modification of the membrane containing it.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate decreases the absorbance due to particles in the homogenate. This change in absorbance was proportional to both the concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate and the concentration of the particles. Further, sodium dodecyl sulfate caused sulfhydryl groups to appear in the crude homogenate and in partially purified enzyme fractions. Synaptosomal preparations did not give such results. At concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate sufficient to cause …

3,3-Diphenyl-2-Morpholinone Derivatives Of 2-Amino-2-Deoxy-D-Allose., Ram Babu

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A new cyclic protective group has been fused to the cis amino alcohol group of benzyl 2-amino-3,5-o-benzylidene-2-deoxyβ-D-Allopyranoside, by way of a unique rearrangements mechanism. To establish the 2-morpholinone structure, chemical studies, such as reduction and acetylation were conducted.

Comparative spectroscopic studies using ir, pmr, and C-13 nmr confirmed the assigned structures.

The 2-morpholinone ring was cleaved by mild alkaline hydrolysis and could be closed again with acetic anhydride in pyridine. An oxazolidinone derivation of benzyl 2-amino-4,6-o-benzylidene-2-deoxyβ-D-allopyranoside was prepared in a quantitative yield by a modification of a known method.

Protective group properties of the oxazolidinone were studied prior to the …

The objective of the present work was to study further the effect of varying substituents on the nitrogen atom and on the ring of sulfonamides in the Birch reduction of aromatic sulfonamides, especially with respect to the amount of thiol formed, in the hope that information concerning the initial cleavage step might be discerned.

Nitrogenous Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M G. Mason Jan 1975

Nitrogenous Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M G. Mason

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Among the many factors influencing crop response to nitrogen applications, the most important are the season, soil type, paddock history, time of application and source of nitrogen. Before deciding whether to use nitrogen on a cereal crop, which source to use and at what rate, the farmer needs some understanding of how these factors work.

Methyl Proton Nmr Shifts Of Coordinated Methanol In A Series Of Co(Ch,0h),X2+ Compounds, J.R Vriesenga, Jerry Goodisman Dec 1974

Methyl Proton Nmr Shifts Of Coordinated Methanol In A Series Of Co(Ch,0h),X2+ Compounds, J.R Vriesenga, Jerry Goodisman

Chemistry - All Scholarship

The isotropic contact NMR shifts of the coordinated cis and tram methanol methyl proton resonances of a series of Co(CH30H)5X2+ complexes were measured, where the ligand X was pyridine, /I- and a-picoline, DMF, DMSO, acetonitrile, and water. The question of how to separate the observed shifts into their respective Fermi contact and dipolar (pseudocontact) contributions was examined in detail with the result that a new procedure for carrying out the separation was proposed. The dipolar shifts for these complexes were found to vary widely, with the acetonitrile complex exhibiting the largest dipolar shift. For the DMSO and water complexes the …

Photochemistry Of Beta-Methyl-Beta-Nitrostyrene & Its Derivatives, Donald Tang Dec 1974

Photochemistry Of Beta-Methyl-Beta-Nitrostyrene & Its Derivatives, Donald Tang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A series of β- methyl-β-nitrostyrenes have been synthesized and subjected to ultraviolet irradiation. A new technique has been developed for synthesis of 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime and its derivatives by irradiation of the corresponding styrene. The yields of the oximes were almost quantitative [except 1-(p-nitrophynyl)-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime and 1-(m-nitrophenyl)-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime]. It has been found that irradiation of the appropriate styrene is a very simple, efficient, and general procedure for the synthesis of 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime and a number of its derivatives. A number of derivatives of β- methyl-β-nitrostyrene (p-CH3, p-Ch30, p-Cl, p-No2, and m-NO2) were irradiated. It was found that …

Esterase Activity In The Greater Wax Moth Larvae, Daphne Lin Pai

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Some properties of esterases of the greater wax moth larvae, Galleria mellonela (L.), were examined and the enzymes partially purified. Several buffer systems were tried and it was found that tris buffer was most suitable. The tris buffer resulted in less hydrolysis of the acetylsalicylic acid. Esterase activity was determined with acetylsalicylic acid in tris buffer, pH = 7.85, 0.05 M. The enzymes were partially purified by combination of acetone powder preparations, ammonium sulfate precipitations and gel filtration.

The ratio of esterase activity to protein content was increased 1.03 fold by acetone powder preparation and 1.5 fold by 70% ammonium …

The Development Of An Arsenic(V) Selective Electrode, Sandra Gee Kang Nov 1974

The Development Of An Arsenic(V) Selective Electrode, Sandra Gee Kang

Dissertations and Theses

The object of this research was to develop an arsenic(V) selective electrode. The electrode is based on a solid state membrane prepared by pressing a precipitate of silver arsenate-silver sulfide into a pellet. After the electrode was made, experiments were designed to check for three general characteristics of the electrodes: dependence of potential on pH for constant arsenic(V) concentration; dependence of potential on arsenic(V) concentrations at constant pH and extent of interference due to phosphate and arsenic(III) ions. From these measurements, it was found that Ag2HAs04 was formed originally in the membranes containing a small fraction of …

Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis, John Gibson Oct 1974

Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis, John Gibson

Honors Theses

Solid phase peptide synthesis is a relatively new biochemical process for polymerization of amino acids. It involves the selection of amino acids, blocking groups, and resins. This procedure was first investigated by R. B. Merrifield in an attempt to simplify previous methods of peptide synthesis. Since other methods involved amino acids, peptide esters, and diketopiperazines, peptide synthesis had been limited by amino acid selection and a host of technical problems. Solid phase synthesis alleviates many of these difficulties and limitations by supplying a faster and simpler stepwise addition of a wide variety of naturally occurring and synthetically prepared amino acids …
