Synthesis Of Hydroxy Tetronic Acid, Phyllis Elaine Hoar May 1967

Synthesis Of Hydroxy Tetronic Acid, Phyllis Elaine Hoar

Senior Scholar Papers

A Historical Introduction is given as background material to the problem of the existance of an ?-hydroxy-?-substituted tetronic acid as the intermediate in the oxidation of tetronic acids to ?-diketones. Three schemes are proposed by which this intermediate may be synthesized, starting with ethyl acetoacetate. In the first scheme the ?-substituted tetronic acid is oxidized by lead tetraacetate to the ?-acetoxy-?-substituted compound. In the second and third schemes, the lead tetraacetate oxidation can be applied to the ?-substituted acetoacetic ester, or the ?-substituted acetoacetic ester can be chlorinated with sulfuric chloride and then converted to the ?-acetoxy ester. Experimental work …

Experiments On The Inactivation Of Zinc By The Mineral Fractions Of The Soil, John J. Hassett May 1967

Experiments On The Inactivation Of Zinc By The Mineral Fractions Of The Soil, John J. Hassett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Zinc deficiency, in many cases, is closely related to organic matter decomposition. DeRemer and Smith (1964) studied the effects of decomposing sugar beet tops on the reactions of Zn65 in a Portneuf soil. They found that with time the Zn65 associated with lime minerals, exchangeable, and water soluble fractions of the soil decreased, while that found with the organic and mineral fractions increased. This increase in the mineral fraction is of particular interest, since the majority of the Zn65 was found to be with this fraction after a period of time. They also showed that the increase …

Some Observations On The Chemical Behavior Of Carrier-Free Iodine-131 And Dilute Carrier Iodine0127, Manning S. Reynolds Apr 1967

Some Observations On The Chemical Behavior Of Carrier-Free Iodine-131 And Dilute Carrier Iodine0127, Manning S. Reynolds

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Unexpected behavior by very small amounts of iodine has been noted by biochemical, medical, and ecological workers. It also has been shown that mild oxidation of carrier-free iodide-131 produced previously unknown species of iodine compounds. It was of interest to determine whether such species also result from the reduction of iodate.

While studying the formation of carrier-free iodate-131 by perchloric acid oxidation of iodide-131 at elevated temperatures, it was found that the acid is not directly responsible for the formation of iodate. Instead, the oxidation is accomplished by a volatile material (thought to be chlorine dioxide) formed only in perchloric …

A Modern Philosopher's Stone, Grant Gill Smith Jan 1967

A Modern Philosopher's Stone, Grant Gill Smith

Faculty Honor Lectures

Alchemists, the forerunners of chemists, for more than a millennium sought the "Philosopher's Stone"-the transmuting agent that could change imperfect base metals such as lead and tin to the noble metals, gold and silver, and also serve as the Elixir of Life to heal the infirmities of man and prolong his existence on earth.

Where alchemy failed, chemistry, in little more than a century, has succeeded in finding the "Philosopher's Stone," for it is now not only possible to transmute one metal into another and heal many of man's infirmities, but scarcely a facet of man's life has not been …

The Effects Of Shearing Time And Stocking Rate On Wool Production, R J. Lightfoot Jan 1967

The Effects Of Shearing Time And Stocking Rate On Wool Production, R J. Lightfoot

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE results of the first experiment comparing "autumn" versus "spring" shearing over a two-year period were published in 1960.

In this experiment the autumn-shorn ewes cut heavier greasy fleeces (even though they also reared considerably more lambs) with less tender wool, resulting in a higher average return per head from this group.

The autumn-shorn wool carried more seed, was less attractive and contained relatively more pieces than did the spring-shorn wool.

Infrared Spectra And Magnetic Properties Of Fluorine Substituted Copper (Ii) Alkanoates, Jose G. Rodriguez Jan 1967

Infrared Spectra And Magnetic Properties Of Fluorine Substituted Copper (Ii) Alkanoates, Jose G. Rodriguez

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to prepare some selected copper(II) fluorcalkanoates, investigate their magnetic susceptibilities, study the infrared spectra of these salts and compare these properties to those of the unfluorinated copper(II) alkanoates….

The experimental data obtained indicate that the copper(II) trifluoroacetate, perfluoropropanoate and perfluorosuccinate does not form a binuclear cage structure. Copper(II) 3-(trifluoromethyl) butanoate with a magnetic moment of 1.4 should possess a binuclear case structure similar to copper( II) acetate monohydrate. The structure for copper( II) perfluoroglutarate monohydrate with a magnetic moment of 1.63 B.M. should have a structure somewhere between the two aforementioned structures"--Abstract, page ii.

Ferroelectric Properties Of Pbzro₃-Bifeo₃ Solid Solutions, Robert Gerson, Pen-Chu Chou, William Joseph James Jan 1967

Ferroelectric Properties Of Pbzro₃-Bifeo₃ Solid Solutions, Robert Gerson, Pen-Chu Chou, William Joseph James

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Solid solutions of BiFeO and PbZrO3 were investigated for crystallographic and dielectric properties. A new pseudocubic perovskite phase was found, which has been tentatively indexed as orthorhombic with the same unit cell as PbZrO3 but with dielectric properties characteristic of a ferroelectric substance. The Curie point in this series of solid solutions has a minimum of about 155°C at a composition of about (PbZrO3)0.80 (BiFeO3)0.20, which at room temperature lies on the boundary between the orthorhombic antiferroelectric and the pseudocubic ferroelectric phases. This composition has a relative dielectric constant of 800 …

Study Of Resonance Effects In Allenic And Related Systems, Robert Andrew Steinkamp Jan 1967

Study Of Resonance Effects In Allenic And Related Systems, Robert Andrew Steinkamp

Doctoral Dissertations

"In order to investigate the possibility of resonance effects through a non-coplanar substituted acetylene, synthesis of bis-(2,5,8-trimethyl-l-naphthyl)-acetylene was attempted. Condensation of acetylene with 2,5,8-trimethyl-l-tetralone to yield an acetylenic glycol followed by dehydration and dehydrogenation was expected to yield the desired non-coplanar acetylene. Comparison of its ultraviolet spectrum with that of di-l-naphthyl-acetylene would have suggested the true nature of the acetylene pi cloud. The acetylene condensation was unsuccessful, however.

Substituted allenes, which contain one sp hybridized carbon atom, were then successfully synthesized for a similar analysis of potential resonance effects. A series of para-substituted 4-phenyl-2-methylbutadienoic acids were synthesized and their pKa's …

Polarography, James Mccarty Jan 1967

Polarography, James Mccarty

Honors Theses

Jaroslav Heyrovsky invented the technique of polarography about 1920 at Charles University in Prague. With proper use one can obtain both qualitative and quantitative analyses of solutions of electro-oxidizable or electro-reducible substances at concentrations.

The key part of a polarography is the dropping mercury electrode. This consists of a fine bore capillary tube connected to a large reservoir of mercury. Each tiny drop which falls from the capillary has approximately the same surface area and takes about the same time to form and fall. The greatest advantage is that each drop is actually a new electrode, and there is consequently …

The Mechanism Of The Electrooxidation Of Acetylene On Gold, James W. Johnson, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James Jan 1967

The Mechanism Of The Electrooxidation Of Acetylene On Gold, James W. Johnson, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Acetylene has been oxidized anodically in aqueous solutions at 80 °C on gold electrodes. It was found that the partial oxidation to CO2 was accompanied by a polymer formation. Effects of potential, acetylene partial pressure, pH, and temperature on the rate (current) were measured. A discontinuity in the Tafel curves was noted that indicated a change in the reaction mechanism with potential. The discontinuity was also pH dependent. A mechanism involving the discharge of H2O and/or OH− has been proposed that is consistent with the experimental results. © 1967, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. All rights reserved.

The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin Jan 1967

The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Viscosity-concentration results in the moderately concentrated range for four samples of polyisobutylene (molecular weights of 1.3 x 104 to 1.0 x 106) in cyclohexane (concentrations up to 4.7 g./dl.) and in benzene (concentrations up to 7.0 g./dl.) at 24°C. (a theta solvent) showed molecular weight and goodness of solvent dependencies similar to those reported earlier for three other polymers. For polyisobutylene, polystyrene, and a copolymer of styrene and methyl methaerylate in good solvents, viscosity-concentration data plotted as ηsp. C[η] vs. k′[η]C fit a single curve. The linear region of this curve suggests that the Huggins equation is useful to C[η] …

The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James Jan 1967

The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The anodic dissolution of cadmium has been studied in aqueous solutions containing Cl−, Br−, I−, Ac−, SO4=, and NO3− ions. The normal valence (+2) was found in all solutions with the exception of NO3−. The apparent valence (calculated) of cadmium ions in nitrate solutions varied from 1.2 to 2.0 and was found to be a function of NO3− concentration, current density, and temperature. An anodic dissolution mechanism has been proposed involving local corrosion and disintegration of the anode which is consistent with the experimental results. © 1967, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. Phalaris Staggers : Prevention By Cobalt Bullets, Bryan J. Gorddard, P. P. Mann, A. J. Hadlow Jan 1967

Phalaris Staggers : Prevention By Cobalt Bullets, Bryan J. Gorddard, P. P. Mann, A. J. Hadlow

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FARMERS in the south west of Western Australia are familiar with the use of cobalt for the prevention of ill-thrift and deaths due to cobalt deficiency in sheep and cattle.

Less common is the use of cobalt for the prevention of chronic phalaris poisoning, known as phalaris staggers.

This condition is well known in eastern Australia, but only isolated cases have been recorded in W.A. no doubt due to the relatively small area sown to phalaris in this state.

Special Studies In Biochemical Instrumental Methods, Parvin Waymack Jan 1967

Special Studies In Biochemical Instrumental Methods, Parvin Waymack

Honors Theses

Two useful methods of biochemical analysis are infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy. The occurrence of absorption bands in the infrared region can be predicted for some of the simpler molecules. Theoretically, in order for a molecule to absorb radiation it must possess a vibrational or rotational frequency the same as that of the electromagnetic radiation, and a change in the magnitude and/or direction of the dipole moment must take place. The change in dipole moment may be caused by asymmetrical vibration or asymmetrical rotation of the molecule.

Chronopotentiometry Of Metals, Lana Sue Legrand Jan 1967

Chronopotentiometry Of Metals, Lana Sue Legrand

For a long time now the general characteristics of potential-time curves in constant current electrolysis have been known and studied. In 1901 Sand derived his equation giving a relationship for the transition time, providing that the solution is unstirred and linear diffusion is the controlling factor.

Calcium Carbonate Determinations, James Phelan Jan 1967

Calcium Carbonate Determinations, James Phelan

Honors Theses

Calcium compounds are abundant in nature. The carbonate ion may exist in many varieties, such as aragonite and limestone. Of major importance in the following discussion, however, is calcite. Calcium carbonate may well be of animal origin, prime examples being sea shells, coral, and chalk. Dolomite, on the other hand, is a double carbonate of calcium and magnesium. Calcium in natural waters exists mainly as a bicarbonate, Ca(HCO3)2, which is temporary hardness, or as a sulfate, which is permanent hardness.

From determinations made periodically (every two weeks) since August 1966, a decrease has been found in the calcium content as …

Ternary Phase Diagram Determinations Concerning Potassium Electrolyte Influence On Aqueous Solutions Of Dioxane Or Tetrahydrofuran, John Albert Mcnaney Jan 1967

Ternary Phase Diagram Determinations Concerning Potassium Electrolyte Influence On Aqueous Solutions Of Dioxane Or Tetrahydrofuran, John Albert Mcnaney

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For the graphical representation of the mutual, partial solubilities of a·ternary system, a diagram is generally employed which is based upon the equilateral triangle, whose properties are especially felicitous for this-purpose.

In this study, the phase diagrams for the following systems were determined: potassium acetate-water-dioxane, potassium acetate-water-tetrahydrofuran, potassium benzoate-water-dioxane, potassium benzoate-watertetrahydrofuran, potassium chloride-water-tetrahydrofuran, and potassium hydroxide-water-dioxane.

The systems, potassium acetate-water-dioxane and potassium hydroxidewater-dioxane, were investigated at 25° and 85°. This study indicates that they are, to a slight degree, temperature dependent. When these systems were plotted on a mole-percentage basis, it was found that both potassium compounds have about the …

Palladium And Platinum Complexes Of Substituted Cycloolefins, Gerald Brady Mccauley Jan 1967

Palladium And Platinum Complexes Of Substituted Cycloolefins, Gerald Brady Mccauley

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Much of the fundamental work on complexation of cycloolefins by platinum metals has been laid down by several workers and ranges from complexes of butadiene those of cyclododecatriene. The work here was chiefly a continuation of research on cycloolefin complexes which appear in papers by Kuljian and Frye (30,31,44). Most of this work on the complexes of cyclic seven, eight, and twelve carbon ligands was repeated here to insure a more complete laboratory background and for verification of previously reported literature data on these compounds. These compounds were used a s basis for comparison to original compounds developed in the …

Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Potassium Nitrate, Martin E. Straumanis, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James Jan 1967

Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Potassium Nitrate, Martin E. Straumanis, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The apparent valence of pure zinc dissolving anodically in 3% KNO3 was determined as a function of current density, temperature, and ultrasonic agitation. The apparent valence of zinc dissolving anodically at 24°C diminishes from 2.01 ± 0.01 at low current densities to 1.86 at about 50 ma and remains fairly constant up to about 80 ma cm−2. This valence is affected to some extent by the preparation, e.g., polishing of the electrode, but is independent of its structure (mono- or polycrystal). Ultrasonic vibrations do not influence the apparent valence at high current densities. In all cases a black film …

A Comparative Study Of Inductive Influence On The Hydrolysis Of Beta-Thioglucopyranosides By Beta-Thioglucosidase And Beta-Glucosidase, Robert W. Miller Jr. Jan 1967

A Comparative Study Of Inductive Influence On The Hydrolysis Of Beta-Thioglucopyranosides By Beta-Thioglucosidase And Beta-Glucosidase, Robert W. Miller Jr.

All Master's Theses

A series of phenyl-D-thioglucopyranosides were prepared and characterized in order to determine the absolute specificity of the .B-thioglucosidase and B-glucosidese enzyme systems toward the th1oglucosidic bond. The specificity of B-glucosidase of almond emulsin toward oxygen linkage seems to be absolute, since no hydrolysis was observed by this enzyme system toward the phenyl-D-thioglucopyranosides. The P-th1oglucosidase system was found to hydrolyze only two of the thioglucopyranosides. It was apparent that only where the electron-attracting substituents in the phenyl group were strong enough to greatly weaken the strength of the sulfur linkage, as in the case of the nitro group, would there be …
