Thallium Dithizonate, Bruno Jaselskis Jun 1952

Thallium Dithizonate, Bruno Jaselskis

Honors Theses

Attempts to establish a useful dithizone method in the determination of thallous ion have been carried on at Union College by Snyder (19). Because the previous work had not produced satisfactory results and because in general thallous dithizonates have not been studied, the following work, under Dr. W. G Ewing’s guidance, was undertaken.

Preparation Of Vanillic Acid And Some Of Its Metallic Salts, Elaine A. Dittmar Jun 1952

Preparation Of Vanillic Acid And Some Of Its Metallic Salts, Elaine A. Dittmar

Bachelors’ Theses

Very little work has been done with vanillic acid and its derivatives since the time when the acid was first synthesized. There are usually good reasons why compounds showing such important properties as food preservatives have lain idle for over seventy-five years. It is of great. interest to know the reasons behind this idleness and also to attempt to prepare some of the derivatives heretofore unreported.

This is the purpose for which this thesis has been written; that a little more knowledge will be contributed to a relatively virgin field. Submitted are the preparation of vanillic acid and some of …

The Separation Of Ethylene Diamine, Morpholine, And M-Toluidine By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Domenick S. Bruno

Bachelors’ Theses

"No other discovery has exerted as great an influence and widened the .field of investigation of the organic chemist as much as Tswett's discovery. or Chromatographic Adsorption Analysis 1n 1906".

In 1910 Tswett's comprehensive work "Chromophylls in the Plant and Animal World" was published. Tswett's fundamental experiments consisted or extracting the color from dried leaves with petroleum ether. He poured the extract through a compressed column or finely powdered calcium carbonate. The column was attached to a filter flask and the solution drawn through. He found that the apparently homogeneous pigment separated into colored bands along the column as the …

Collector-Depressant Equilibria In The Flotation Of Molybdenite, Robert Létrenne Andelin Jun 1952

Collector-Depressant Equilibria In The Flotation Of Molybdenite, Robert Létrenne Andelin

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents the results of research on the flotation system potassium n-amyl xanthate - sodium sulfide - molybdenite. The purposes of the research were (1) to determine the theoretical collector-depressant equilibria conditions of this system necessary for the flotation or depression of molybdenite, (2) to ascertain the mechanism of adsorption or the collector potassium n-amyl xanthate and the depressant sodium sulfide on molybdenite, and (3) to calculate the standard free energy of adsorption on molybdenite of the collector and depressant in this system. To accomplish these purposes it was necessary to develop a satisfactory experimental method for the controlled …

The Teaching Of Science, Sherwin Maeser May 1952

The Teaching Of Science, Sherwin Maeser

Faculty Honor Lectures

Like to teach! Whether with the expectant, half-frightened freshman, the senior, worried about his preparation now that . he must get out and meet competition, or the graduate student interested in new discoveries, I like to work with all of them.

I have been teaching a long time now. As has always been the case when one generation is thinking of turning over its work to the next, I am glad to have the opportunity to talk about some of the things that I consider important in this job of teaching.

The most varied and the most acute problems of …

The Preparation, Properties And Reactions Of B-Diethylaminoethoxy-Methylsilanes, Edward G. Tajkowski May 1952

The Preparation, Properties And Reactions Of B-Diethylaminoethoxy-Methylsilanes, Edward G. Tajkowski

Honors Theses

In the course of work on the application of silicones to textiles and paper, chiefly to impart water repellency thereby, it has been found that the most desirable method for industrial operations is from water solution. Methods for preparing emulsions of silicones have been developed and such materials are available commercially. However, it would still be of interest to obtain a material which is directly water soluble and which is either a silicone itself, or can be simply and easily converted to a silicone in situ.

These facts were brought out by Dr. D. P. Spalding (1) in a discussion …

The Effects Of Ph And Salts On The Viscosity Of Gelatin Sol (The Hofmeister Series), Frank Z. Pollara May 1952

The Effects Of Ph And Salts On The Viscosity Of Gelatin Sol (The Hofmeister Series), Frank Z. Pollara

Honors Theses

The purpose ot this investigation was to accurately determine the effect of monovalent sodium salts on the viscosity of gelatin sol as a function of pH and to establish the Hofmeister series by this method.

The gelatin investigated was derived from pigskin and the salts used were NaCl, NaNO3, and NaI, of various concentrations. In order to justify and make reasonable the conclusions reached in this investigation, these conclusions must be viewed in the light of the work previously done by other investigators of this field.

With this in mind, a short historical survey of the origin and development of …

The Rate Of Hydrolysis Of Ethyl-Α-Β-Dibromopropionate, Earl Ney May 1952

The Rate Of Hydrolysis Of Ethyl-Α-Β-Dibromopropionate, Earl Ney

Bachelors’ Theses

Experimentation on the rate of hydrolysis of esters is preceded only by the rate of inversion of cane sugar started by Wilhemy in 1850. However, work on ester hydrolysis soon took the stage in preference as the reaction most favorable to the study of reaction rates. Ostwald's work on the rate of hydrolysis of ethyl acetate in 1884 was the first monumental work and experimentation then proceeded so rapidly that in 1889 Arrhenius' theory of hydrogen ion catalysis and later the dissociation theory itself was born and nursed. Yes, nursed by many more ester hydrolysis experiments which built up such …

The Content Of Pantothenic Acid, Folic Acid And Vitamin B12 Like-Activity In Alfalfa Hay Grown In Utah Soils Treated With Different Fertilizers, Buranaphoka Kashemsri May 1952

The Content Of Pantothenic Acid, Folic Acid And Vitamin B12 Like-Activity In Alfalfa Hay Grown In Utah Soils Treated With Different Fertilizers, Buranaphoka Kashemsri

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Vitamins play an important role in the nutrition of man and animal. As early as 1897 Eijkman was able to demonstrate the symptoms of thiamine deficiency disease in birds. Since then, vitamins have been regarded as one of the most essential factors in nutrition. Only small quantities in the diet are necessary, yet lack of any of them will inhibit the growth and produce certain kinds of deficiency diseases.

Phase Diagram: Sulfur In Beta-Phenylethyl Bromide, Robert L. Kling

Bachelors’ Theses

In this work I wish to apply the phase rule to a particular mixture of sulfur in beta-phenylethylbromide. Through experimental data it will be shown how various concentrations change the temperature in the phases or what the temperature is for various concentrations of sulfur in the solvent beta-phenylethylbromide.

Further Studies Of The Reactions Of Quinoxaline And 2-Methylquinoxaline, Marcus N. Myers Apr 1952

Further Studies Of The Reactions Of Quinoxaline And 2-Methylquinoxaline, Marcus N. Myers

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation was also made with the object of preparing the vinylquinoxalines and studying their 1,4- addition reactions. The attempts to prepare vinylquinoxalines were unsuccessful. However, sodium acetylide reacted with 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline to give a new compound which (from its analysis and properties) appears to be 2,3-bis(1-hydroxyethyl) quinoxaline . This new compound should be investigated further , as it may prove to be an intermediate in the preparation of vinylquinoxalines. The preparation of 2-methylquinoxaline has become very simple by the use of the method of Jones, Kornfeld and McLaughlin^5, which consists of condensing o-phenylenediamine with pyruvic aldehyde. The condensation of …

Some Reductions Of Substituted Benzalacetophenones By Aluminum Isopropoxide And Lithium Aluminum Hydride, Calvin Lyndall Fisher

Master's Theses

While the literature contains a lnrge volume of material on the reduction of carbonyl compounds, the historical section of this thesis will be chiefly concerned with the reduction of -- unsaturated carbonyl compounds by catalytic hydrogenation, metal combinations, aluminum alkoxides and by lithium aluminum hydride.

The purpose of this thesis is to study the effect various substituents have on a conjugated system when the system is undergoing reduction by lithium aluminum hydride.

Urea Adducts Of The Esters Of Stearic Acid, Paul Elliott Greene Jan 1952

Urea Adducts Of The Esters Of Stearic Acid, Paul Elliott Greene

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Urea forms crystalline complexes with n-alkanes and their liner derivatives but not with most branched and cyclic hydrocarbons and their derivatives. The compounds are stable enough to be used in separating these types of aliphatic compounds from their branched and cyclic analogs. Linear esters derived from normal saturated acids give adducts as expected. Urea complexation was found to be of great importance in the purification and separation of unsaturated esters of high molecular weight.

The object of the present research was to investigate the compositions of urea adducts of various long-chain esters, approaching the class of waxes, to test various …

Aromatic Acetals : Their Synthesis And Alkylation, Robert Conner Gass Jan 1952

Aromatic Acetals : Their Synthesis And Alkylation, Robert Conner Gass

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to study the known methods of forming acetals and find one or several that could be used in further investigation. In connection with the reactions, the use of various catalysts was pertinent. Some of the catalysts used were hydrogen chloride, calcium chloride, ferric chloride, aromatic sulfonic acids, and other. There was no data available comparing the sulfonic acids with the inorganic salts and mineral acids. For that reason one of the subsidiary problems of this investigation was such a comparison.

In order to investigate stability, several acetals were subjected to conditions intended to produce …

Chalcones Derived From M-Nitroacetophenone, Richard Allan Hendry Jan 1952

Chalcones Derived From M-Nitroacetophenone, Richard Allan Hendry

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The object of this research was to prepare substituted derivatives of various chalcones having the nitro group substituted in the 31-position, the idea being to help complete the series of chalcones having the nitro group in that position. This was to be done by condensing various substituted benzaldehydes with m-nitroacetophenone, using dry hydrogen chloride as a condensing agent. The properties of the resulting chalcones were then to be determined by observing color reactions, spectra, and other general physical properties.

Montan Wax From California Lignites, Robert John Kvick Jan 1952

Montan Wax From California Lignites, Robert John Kvick

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Montan wax has been extracted from the lignite deposits of Germany since the early part of the twentieth century, The wax was named by von Boyen (1901), The word Montan is derived from the Latin term montanus meaning "of a mountain," The wax has found extensive uses in polishes, insulating materials, candles, explosives, and special applications in the rubber industry, The increased demand for waxes for industrial uses and the limited supply of domestic origin has made the study of the sources and characteristics of domestic waxes desirable, California lignite has been shown to be a valuable source of Montan …

4-Benzoyl-4-Methyl-1, 2-Epoxypentane, An Attempted Synthesis, Robert L. Snell Jan 1952

4-Benzoyl-4-Methyl-1, 2-Epoxypentane, An Attempted Synthesis, Robert L. Snell

Masters Theses

"The object of this research was to prepare first the simplest homologue of the epoxy-ketone considered by Russell to have been his product. If this homologue, 4-benzoyl-4-methyl-1,2-epoxypentane, could be prepared and caused to form a cyclic derivative of the type given by 1,4-diketones with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone, the organic chemist would be given a new approach to substituted 1,2-diazines as well as a previously unreported reaction of the epoxide grouping. If this reaction could be made to occur, other epoxides of this series would be prepared and treated in the same manner.

It was decided that the shortest route to 4-benzoyl-4-methyl-1,2-epoxypentane would …

Halogenated Epoxide-Phenol Reactions A Mechanism Study, Richard L. Rowton Jan 1952

Halogenated Epoxide-Phenol Reactions A Mechanism Study, Richard L. Rowton

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation was to study the reactions of two other halogenated epoxides--namely, 3-bromo-1,2-epoxybutane and l-bromo-2,3-epoxybutane--with the phenolate ion, with the hope that the results obtained would shed additional light upon the mechanisms of such reactions. At the present time, no direct practical applications of the results can be forseen. However, the information gained will be a worthwhile addition to the vast existing store of knowledge already at our disposal, and might be of some help to future investigators"--Introduction, page 2.

The Determination Of Moisture In Active Dry Yeast, Richard F. Fenske Jan 1952

The Determination Of Moisture In Active Dry Yeast, Richard F. Fenske

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer, having been employed for the past three years, in the control laboratory of one of this country's largest yeast concerns, is very much interested in the determination of moisture in active dry yeast and has there tore made the investigation presented in this paper.

The moisture content is, of critical importance in the production of active dry yeast. A yeast whose moisture content is too low will have poor baking characteristics while a yeast whose moisture content is too high will have poor keeping quality. Inconsistent results have been obtained by using various methods to determine the moisture …
