A Study Of The Replacement Of The Aryl Amino Group By Hydrogen Using Isopropyl Nitrite, Frederick B. Budnik Jun 1948

A Study Of The Replacement Of The Aryl Amino Group By Hydrogen Using Isopropyl Nitrite, Frederick B. Budnik

Honors Theses

The use of the amino group as a directing agent in the synthesis of many aryl compounds is a well known and often used process. Therefore a simple and efficient method of removing the amino group after it has served its purpose is to be desired. The purpose of this work has been to investigate the possibilitiy of deaminating using dilute solutions and isopropyl nitrite as a diazotizing agent. The method of reacting as well as the use of different reactants was studied.

A Study Of Silica-Alumina Gels, Howard W. Bishop Jun 1948

A Study Of Silica-Alumina Gels, Howard W. Bishop

Honors Theses

The general purpose of this investigation has been to obtain data concerning the preparation of and the time of set of a silica-alumina gel. Much work has been done here at Union College in studying the effects of temperature, hydrogen-ion concentration, presence and concentration of certain impurities, and other factors upon the time of set of a silica gel mixture. In these experiments, we used a silica gel mixture whose concentration of silica was the same as that used in these previous experiments, but we mixed with it enough alumina to form a final silica-alumina gel mixture whose mol ratio …

The Alkylation Of Dimethylaniline With Ethylene Glycol Sulfite, John R. Draves Jun 1948

The Alkylation Of Dimethylaniline With Ethylene Glycol Sulfite, John R. Draves

Honors Theses

The alkylation of ter.-amines with alkylchlorosulfinates and alkylsulfites has been of interest in producing various betaine salts. Most of the work reported in the literature had been with ter.-aliphatic amines, amino acids, pyridine, straight-chain sulfites, and chlorosulfinates. No work has been reported on the alkylation of ter.-aromatic amines with cyclic sulfites and the betaine salts produced. The purpose of this investigation was to isolate and characterize the betaine salt produced by the alkylation of a ter.-aromatic amine with a cyclic sulfite. The reaction chosen was that between dimethylaniline and ethylene glycol sulfite.

A Study Of Fossil Resins In Huntington Canyon Coal, Ross D. Gardner Jun 1948

A Study Of Fossil Resins In Huntington Canyon Coal, Ross D. Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

The object of this investigation was to determine whether or not a certain sample of raw resin, collected by Mr. Adriaan Nagelvoort from coal from Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, could be separated into more than one fraction with each fraction having distinctly different properties. Three methods of separation were attempted: (l) Separation of specific gravity fractions, (2) separation by use of solvents, and (3) chromatographic separation. Properties determined as a means of establishing any differences in the resins were: solubility, softening points, acid numbers, and iodine numbers.

The Synthesis And Physical Properties Of A Few Unsymmetrically Substituted Ethanes, Gerald R. Aldrich Jun 1948

The Synthesis And Physical Properties Of A Few Unsymmetrically Substituted Ethanes, Gerald R. Aldrich

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer's interest was aroused in the synthesis of organic fluorides while taking a course in Organic Preparations. The fact that fluorine chemistry was something relatively recent made the topic especially appealing. While the chloro, bromo, and iodo derivatives of most of the homologous series had been prepared, many of the fluorine compounds had not. Previous research had disclosed the asymmetrical diaryl ethanes possessed peculiar properties - to mention one, fluorescence. It was proposed that a few of the asymmetrical diaryl ethanes having fluorine and chlorine substituted on the ring in various positions with respect to one another be prepared …

The Identification Of Various Alkyl Halides Through Formation Of Quaternary Ammonium Salts, John L. Canning Jun 1948

The Identification Of Various Alkyl Halides Through Formation Of Quaternary Ammonium Salts, John L. Canning

Bachelors’ Theses

Within the field of the characterization of organic compounds the preparation of suitable derivatives of the compound to be identified is the final process of the laboratory analysis. When the unknown is of such chemical nature that the preparation of derivatives is difficult or impossible the identification is not too satisfactory. This is often the case when the unknown is an alkyl halide. At present the identification of many of these compounds depends exclusively upon an examination of the physical constants.

It is the purpose of this paper to investigate the possibility of preparing quaternary ammonium compounds by treating the …

An Investigation Of Phosphate Adsorption By The Clays Montmorillonite And Kaolinite /|Cby Gordon Richard Bradford, G. R. Bradford Jun 1948

An Investigation Of Phosphate Adsorption By The Clays Montmorillonite And Kaolinite /|Cby Gordon Richard Bradford, G. R. Bradford

Theses and Dissertations

Clay minerals have widespread application in industry and play an important role in plant life (2, 17). It is the adsorptive capacity of clay which determines largely its importance to man (2). The purpose of this investigation is to interpret the mechanism of adsorption of the phosphate anion by the two clay minerals montmorillonite and kaolinite. This particular system was singled out for two reasons: 1. It has agricultural significance. 2. It is believed that if the particular phosphate adsorption mechanism is understood it will aid in an understanding of many other adsorption phenomena associated with clay.

For the most part, only inorganic reagents were used, but in special cases, a few of the more common orgaic reagents were used. (b) An evaluation of …

The Identification Of Alkyl Halides Through Conversion To Alkyl 3, 5 Dinitrobenzoates By A Reaction Between The Alkyl Halide And A Metallic Salt Of The Acid, James L. Finnerty May 1948

The Identification Of Alkyl Halides Through Conversion To Alkyl 3, 5 Dinitrobenzoates By A Reaction Between The Alkyl Halide And A Metallic Salt Of The Acid, James L. Finnerty

Bachelors’ Theses

To materially aid in the identification of a series of organic compounds one must develop a new system of derivatives or suggest better methods for preparing known derivatives. The problem of characterizing alkyl halides is one in which there is room for improvement, for the best derivatives of these compounds are now prepared by means of the Grignard reaction which may often fail to give satisfactory results. Moreover, there is a series of solid alkyl esters, the 3, 5 dinitrobenzoates, which serve very well for the identification of aliphatic alcohols, and which should be applied to the alkyl halides if …

Conductance Of Organic Nitrogen Compounds At Their Melting Points, Leonard Joseph Burant May 1948

Conductance Of Organic Nitrogen Compounds At Their Melting Points, Leonard Joseph Burant

Bachelors’ Theses

Even though there are many practical applications using the conductance of fused salts, such as the commercial preparation of aluminum, sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, there is very little in the literature on such conductance.

Because organic compounds as a class do not conduct as well as acids, bases, and salts, even less attention has been paid to the conductance of organic compounds in the fused state. Since the author has had some experience with organic preparations, it seemed worth while to prepare certain types of related heterocyclic organic compounds and to test their conductance in the fused state.

The Determination Of The Surface Tension Of Benzyl Ether, Sze-Kwei Min Jan 1948

The Determination Of The Surface Tension Of Benzyl Ether, Sze-Kwei Min

Masters Theses

"The accurate determination of surface tension is of importance in the investigation of theories of surface structure, the structure of liquids, molecular cohesion, in the study of colloids, especially in physiological work, and in various lines of technical chemistry. The two methods most commonly used for determining surface tension are the capillary rise method and the drop weight method. The theory of the former is simple, but its technique is difficult. Its use in some cases is the cause of errors as high as 30%, due to its inapplicability to certain classes of substance, and is much more sensitive to …

A Study Of The Prussian Blue Test For Nitrogen, Marilyn M. Erickson Jan 1948

A Study Of The Prussian Blue Test For Nitrogen, Marilyn M. Erickson

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of obtaining good nitrogen tests on all types of organic compounds interested the author as a result of past experience in the identification of organic compounds.

The practical application of a positive solution to this problem would be an aid to the students of characterization of organic compounds. It is necessary for them to make an elementary analysis in order to determine the class into which the unknown compound belongs. A nitrogen test which will give definite results will eliminate any doubt as to the presence of nitrogen.

Preparation And Physical Properties Of Some Unsymmetrically Substituted Ethanes, William F. Buth Jan 1948

Preparation And Physical Properties Of Some Unsymmetrically Substituted Ethanes, William F. Buth

Bachelors’ Theses

Early in 1947, while investigating the potentialities of various compounds for use as liquid dielectric materials, A method was found for the preparation of unsymmetrical ditolyl ethane by a condensation method using sulfuric acid. This material was thought to have excellent dielectric characteristics so it was prepared and tested. The tests were favorable enough, to warrant further investigation into the field of the unsymmetrical ethanes. Being aware of the physical properties required for a good liquid dielectric; it was proposed to prepare a few of the related compounds for which no data was known to exist and to select those …
