Microradiography is a comparatively recent development in the X-ray field. The term applies to the analysis of a thin specimen by photographing it with X-rays and subsequently enlarging the photograph to bring out minute structural elements. A microradiograph has several advantages over a photomicrograph. First of all it goes beyond the surface and reveals the internal structure of the specimen, a more important advantage at least as concerns this paper is the ability of the microradiograph to enable one to accurately determine the chemical elements making up the specimen.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, electrochemistry became an established part of the science of chemistry. Volta believed in the existence of some definite relationship between chemical and electrical phenomena and his investigations led to the discovery of a means of converting chemical energy to electrical energy. His observations became the foundation upon which all modern electrochemistry is based. Volta alternated zinc and silver disks with paper soaked in salt water between each disk. This afforded a source of electrical energy which produced a current and became to be known as the Voltaic-pile.

This investigation was carried out for general chemistry classes in which recitation and laboratory work are closely integrated and in which very close supervision is given to laboratory classes. Results indicate that there are fewer failures under these conditions if students do individual work. Students receiving grades of over 80% seem to work just as effectively in pairs as they do when working individually, but about 5% who fail when working in pairs could, apparently obtain grades above 60% if they did individual work. The term glucoside has been applied to those compounds which have the property of supplying, upon hydrolysis, a sugar and one or more other products. Nearly all organic compounds which occur in plants (fruit, bark, roots) are in combination with a sugar. They all resemble the simple methyl glucosides. In many cases, the glucoside form is more soluble than the substance itself. Naturally occurring glucosides are prepared by extracting from the plant, by means of a solvent such as water or alcohol. Glucosides are synthesized (generally) from the non-saccharide constituent and acetobromoglucose in the presence of AgO or Ag2CO3. The …

They are used in automatic equipment, telephone, telegraph, and railway signal equipment as well as in condenser type motors. The attached tables and graph show the calcium and phosphorus content of Western Wheat grass {Agropyron smithii) and Blue Grama grass (Bouteloua, gracilis) at different stages of growth. The percentages are calculated on an air dr-/ basis which would be comparable with the moisture content of very dry hay. Tne values, therefore, represent the approximate calcium and phosphorus levels in hay made from these grasses ~f they are cut at the stages indicated in the graph and tables.

The increasing importance of a knowledge of dielectric constants of substances is shown by the large number of measurements that have appeared in recent literature- Several methods have been used in making these measurements, but probably the most precise ate the methods based on the heterodyne beat principle. This apparatus is designed to measure substances that are non-conducting. The polagraphic method should be able to determine the presence of hydrogen bonds in ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in carefully buffered water solutions. The wave-height for the reduction of ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in acid solution is about one-half the height in basic solution. This would seem to indicate that the intermediate reduction product is formed by the reduction of ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in acid medium. This intermediate is stabilized by the presence of a hydrogen bond, so that further reduction to the hydroxy benzyl alcohol is not possible at the dropping mercury electrode.

Hydrogels of titania, formed by addition of bases to acid solutions of titanium salts, have been known since Rose's work in 1823. Hydrogels of zirconia have been prepared and investigated by several workers. These hydrogels of titania and zirconia are both acid gels, that is, they are formed at pH's considerably less than 7.
