Preparation Of Thianthrene, Eugene Alton Talley
Preparation Of Thianthrene, Eugene Alton Talley
Master's Theses
This work was begun in an attempt to study further the preparation of thianthrene from 2-dichlorobenzene and alkali sulfides. g_-Dichlorobenzene is a liquid by-product in the preparation of its solid isomer, E-dichlorobenzene, which is used extensively for controlling moths and peach tree borers. The study of the preparation of thianthrene from the liquid isomer was undertaken because the preparation might develop into a possible use for the large quantities available.
Thianthrene might be made from 2-dibromo- and 2-diiodo-benzene but these are not as cheap or as easily obtained as the dichloro derivative and were not used in this study various …

The Catalytic Vapor-Phase Hydrolysis Of Benzene And Toluene, Clemens Raebel Maise
The Catalytic Vapor-Phase Hydrolysis Of Benzene And Toluene, Clemens Raebel Maise
Masters Theses
"The vapor-phase synthesis of organic compounds represents a new field of study which has attracted the attention of investigators only within recent years. However, wide interest is apparent in this field and several processes of commercial importance have already been developed. Hydrolysis is perhaps the newest of all the types of vapor-phase synthesis; the literature consists of little more than a few patents...The vapor-phase hydrolysis of benzene and toluene, therefore, presented an interesting possibility. These two hydrocarbons are considered very stable toward water in the liquid-phase. The purpose of this investigation was to determine to what extent their stability toward …
Corrosion Of Aluminum In Alkaline Solutions, George Oliver Doherty
Corrosion Of Aluminum In Alkaline Solutions, George Oliver Doherty
Bachelors’ Theses
Aluminum has been an important member of the metal group since its isolation about 100 years ago. It has sprung into prominence in the commercial field and in household use in the last thirty years. The metal is light, possesses good thermal and electrical conductivity and as an alloy with other metals takes on a surprising degree of strength.
The problem of producing aluminum cheaply enough to make it practical has finally been overcome to a great extent. It now remains to be seen just what further uses there are to which this new metal may be put. Aluminum may …

The Preparation Of Glucuronic Acid From Gum Acacia, Mary Laurissa Felix
The Preparation Of Glucuronic Acid From Gum Acacia, Mary Laurissa Felix
Bachelors’ Theses
Initial interest in the preparation of glucuronic acid from gum acacia was prompted by several reasons. Being interested in both the chemical and biological fields, the subject of glucuronic acid made a strong appeal. Although glucuronic acid was discovered over fifty years ago, its position in physiology remained until recently undefined. Now, however, it seems fairly certain that this compound is closely related to carbohydrate metabolism and plays an important role as a detoxicating agent in the body.
The laboratory preparation of glucuronic acid is still one of the important problems of chemistry. Our present knowledge of its synthesis and …
Syntheses In The Thiophene Series, Alfred William Weitkamp
Syntheses In The Thiophene Series, Alfred William Weitkamp
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
SUMMARY
The Friedel-Crafts reaction has been used in the preparation of thiophene ketones, some of which were hitherto unknown. Certain limitations of the reaction have been noted.
The mercuration of thiophene ketones has been systematically investigated for the first time. Many new halogen derivatives of benzothienone have been synthesized. These were employed in the elucidation of the structure of a complex mercurial· derived from this ketone.
A new modification of an old reaction has been developed whereby benzothienone can be mercurated quickly and almost quantitatively. Interesting derivatives of this little known ketone have been synthesized. Chief among these are the …

Conductivity Measurements In Silicic Acid Gels During Setting, Joseph R. Ciaranello
Conductivity Measurements In Silicic Acid Gels During Setting, Joseph R. Ciaranello
Honors Theses
During the course of extensive investigations of the properties and behavior of silicic acid gels, the study of the conductivity of these substances was begun in the hope that data could be assembled to throw some light on the mechanism of gelation. The experiments to be described are a continuation of the work on conductivity carried out at Union College under the direction of Dr. C. B. Hurd. H. Swanker (1), in 1932, making use of a Wheatstone bridge at 1000 cycles, failed to find any change in conductivity, but R. W. Gurry (2), using refined methods, was able to …

Study Of The Setting Of Gels Of Hydrated Titanium Dioxide, Elliott Fraser
Honors Theses
Since titanium is in the same group in the periodic table as silicon, it should form gels in a similar manner. This expected similarity was the starting point for the following research.
The Preparation Of Pure Silicic Acid Gels By The Oxidation Of Silane, William G. Gapcynski
The Preparation Of Pure Silicic Acid Gels By The Oxidation Of Silane, William G. Gapcynski
Honors Theses
The oxidation of silane, SiH, with ozone to give a hydrosol of silica of a very high degree of purity has been accomplished by Baibajew and Kargin. Such a sol is practically free from any electrolytes or other impurities. The purpose of this research work was to prepare by this method pure silica sols of a concentration great enough to eventually form a gel free from any electrolytes. It was desired to study some of the properties of such gels, especially the time of set and the changes if any in the pH of the gel during the time it …

Influence Of Temperature And Acid On Time Of Set Of Silicic Acid Gels, Angelo J. Marotta
Honors Theses
The chief purpose of this research was to study the time of set of silicic acid gels produced by the reaction of phosphoric acid and sodium silicate solutions. The secondary purpose was to determine the hear of activation by means of the data procured through the main purpose. The times of set of these gels were measured at four different temperatures. The pH of each gel was measured also. The pH of the above mentioned gels ranged from a pH of 3 to a pH of 10.
The Effect Of The Change Of Ph During The Time Of Set, Upon The Time Of Set Of Silicic Acid Gels, Harris W. Paton
The Effect Of The Change Of Ph During The Time Of Set, Upon The Time Of Set Of Silicic Acid Gels, Harris W. Paton
Honors Theses
The study of this particular subject was made in the hope that it might lead to a more complete explanation of the manner of setting of gels. It was thought that by changing the pH during the time of set irregularities in the course of the setting of the gel might be found. It was thought, for example, that there might be a period during which the addition might have less effect than average, or a period where it would have a much greater than average effect. These periods might possibly have occurred at any part of the time of …

A Study Of Methods For The Recovery Of Silver, Bromine, Iodine, And Sodium Thiosulfate From Used Photographic Fixing Baths, Leroy Agustave Bay
A Study Of Methods For The Recovery Of Silver, Bromine, Iodine, And Sodium Thiosulfate From Used Photographic Fixing Baths, Leroy Agustave Bay
Masters Theses
"Sodium thiosulfate was one of the pioneer reagents used in photography, and is still the most important reagent used in photographic fixing. The solubility of the silver halides in an excess of sodium thiosulfate makes it important as a reagent for removing the undeveloped silver halides from the film. The life of a fixing bath is controlled by the halogen content. As the ratio of halogens to sodium thiosulfate is increased, the time required for fixing is also increased until the ratio reaches such a point that fogging of the film results. Most of the solutions are discarded long before …
