Joint Time-Frequency Analysis: Taking Charge Penetration Depth And Current Spatial Distribution In The Single Pore As An Example, Nan Wang, Qiu-An Huang, Wei-Heng Li, Yu-Xuan Bai, Jiu-Jun Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

In recent years, joint time-frequency analysis has once again become a research hotspot. Supercapacitors have high power density and long service life, however, in order to balance between power density and energy density, two key factors need to be considered: (i) the specific surface area of the porous matrix; (ii) the electrolyte accessibility to the intra-pore space of porous carbon matrix. Electrochemical impedance spectra are extensively used to investigate charge penetration ratio and charge storage mechanism in the porous electrode for capacitance energy storage. Furthermore, similar results could be obtained by different methods such as stable-state analysis in the frequency …

Measurements Of Rate Constant For Electrode Reactions, Lian-Huan Han, Jia-Yao Guo, Miao-Miao Cui

Journal of Electrochemistry

Standard electron-transfer rate constant is one of the intrinsic properties for an electrochemical reaction, which is significant in the study of electrode kinetics. It is a key criterion for one to clarify the mechanism and pathway of a specific electrochemical reaction, and to screening and design the electrocatalysts and battery materials. Herein, we will introduce the measuring methods of rate constant for electrode reactions, including polarization curve, rotating disk electrode, ultramicroelectrode, scanning electrochemical microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, current step, potential step and cyclic voltammetry, etc., to provide a guide to investigate electrode kinetics for graduate students and researchers in the …

Confirmation Of Anomalous-Heat Report, Steven B. Krivit, Melvin H. Miles

Journal of Electrochemistry

This study identifies, for the first time, critical calculation errors made by Nathan Lewis and his co-authors, in their study presented on May 1, 1989, at the American Physical Society meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. Lewis et al. analysed calorimetrically measured heat results in nine experiments reported by Martin Fleischmann and his co-authors. According to the Lewis et al. analysis, each of the experiments, where calculated for no recombination, showed anomalous power losses. When we used the same raw data, our corrected calculations indicate that each experiment showed anomalous power gains. As such, these data suggest the possibility of a new, …

Automated Workflow For Redox Potentials And Acidity Constants Calculations From Machine Learning Molecular Dynamics, Feng Wang, Jun Cheng

Journal of Electrochemistry

Redox potentials and acidity constants are key properties for evaluating the performance of energy materials. To achieve computational design of new generation of energy materials with higher performances, computing redox potentials and acidity constants with computational chemistry have attracted lots of attention. However, many works are done by using implicit solvation models, which is difficult to be applied to complex solvation environments due to hard parameterization. Recently, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) has been applied to investigate real electrolytes with complex solvation. Furthermore, AIMD based free energy calculation methods have been established to calculate these physical chemical properties accurately. However, …

Tropical forest root characteristics and resource acquisition strategies are underrepresented in vegetation and global models, hampering the prediction of forest–climate feedbacks for these carbon-rich ecosystems. Lowland tropical forests often have globally unique combinations of high taxonomic and functional biodiversity, rainfall seasonality, and strongly weathered infertile soils, giving rise to distinct patterns in root traits and functions compared with higher latitude ecosystems. We provide a roadmap for integrating recent advances in our understanding of tropical forest belowground function into vegetation models, focusing on water and nutrient acquisition. We offer comparisons of recent advances in empirical and model understanding of root characteristics …

Extrasynaptic Localization Is Essential For Α5gabaa Receptor Modulation Of Dopamine System Function, Alexandra M. Mccoy, Thomas D. Prevot, Md Yeunus Mian, Dishary Sharmin, Adeeba N. Ahmad, James M. Cook, Etienne L. Sibille, Daniel J. Lodge

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Dopamine system dysfunction, observed in animal models with psychosis-like symptomatology, can be restored by targeting gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABAARs) containing the α5, but not α1, subunit in the ventral hippocampus (vHipp). The reason for this discrepancy in efficacy remains elusive; however, one key difference is that gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors containing the α1 subunit (α1GABAARs) are primarily located in the synapse, whereas gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors containing the α5 subunit (α5GABAARs) are mostly extrasynaptic. To test whether receptor location is responsible for this difference in efficacy, we injected an siRNA into the vHipp to knock down …

Tunable Magnetic Coupling In Graphene Nanoribbon Quantum Dots, Peter H. Jacobse, Mamun Sarker, Anshul Saxena, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Ziyi Wang, Emma Berger, Narayana R. Aluru, Alexander Sinitskii, Michael F. Crommie

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

Carbon-based quantum dots (QDs) enable flexible manipulation of electronic behavior at the nanoscale, but controlling their magnetic properties requires atomically precise structural control. While magnetism is observed in organic molecules and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), GNR precursors enabling bottom-up fabrication of QDs with various spin ground states have not yet been reported. Here the development of a new GNR precursor that results in magnetic QD structures embedded in semiconducting GNRs is reported. Inserting one such molecule into the GNR backbone and graphitizing it results in a QD region hosting one unpaired electron. QDs composed of two precursor molecules exhibit nonmagnetic, antiferromagnetic, …

River networks play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle, as relevant sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. Advancements in high-frequency monitoring in aquatic environments have enabled measurement of dissolved CO2 concentration at temporal resolutions essential for studying carbon variability and evasion from these dynamic ecosystems. Here, we describe the adaptation, deployment, and validation of an open-source and relatively low-cost in situ pCO2 sensor system for lotic ecosystems, the lotic-SIPCO2. We tested the lotic-SIPCO2 in 10 streams that spanned a range of land cover and basin size. Key system adaptations for lotic environments included prevention of biofouling, …

Investigations Of The Eutectic Formation And Skin Rejuvenation By Hyaluronan - Kojic Acid Dipalmitate System, Syed Waqar Hussain Shah, Sumbal Imran, Iram Bibi, Kashif Ali, Nadia Bashir

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Eutectic phenomenon has been investigated in binary system based on biopolymer hyaluronan (HN) and kojic acid dipalmitate (KAD). Solid-liquid phase diagram showed a significant dependence of melting points on weight fraction of KAD up to KAD < 0.5. A negligible regain to melting temperature of pure KAD occurred later. Simulations of molecular mechanics using a four-unit segment of HN and KAD revealed the interaction between carbonyl of KAD with 4-OH on N-acetylglucosamine unit of oligomer. Infrared vibrational spectroscopy also endorsed the existence of a weakly interacting system. Such behavior was expected due to steric hinderance and rigidity of biopolymer. The thermal decomposition temperature of HN (i.e., 215 °C) was increased to 322 °C in HK50 having HN and KAD in 1:50 w/w. Bioelectric impedance analysis revealed that these green materials could promote skin health in humans.

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The first general enantioselective alkyl-Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi (NHK) coupling reactions are disclosed herein by employing a Cr-electrocatalytic decarboxylative approach. Using easily accessible aliphatic carboxylic acids (via redox-active esters) as alkyl nucleophile synthons, in combination with aldehydes and enabling additives, chiral secondary alcohols are produced in a good yield with high enantioselectivity under mild reductive electrolysis. This reaction, which cannot be mimicked using stoichiometric metal or organic reductants, tolerates a broad range of functional groups and is successfully applied to dramatically simplify the synthesis of multiple medicinally relevant structures and natural products. Mechanistic studies revealed that this asymmetric alkyl e-NHK reaction was enabled …

Chemotherapy is a substantial approach in the management of breast cancer despite the occurrence of chemotherapy-associated side effects and the development of multidrug resistance in cancer cells. At this point, a variety of quinone derivatives may represent potential as possible anticancer drug candidates due to possessing structural similarity towards clinically used anticancer drugs like doxorubicin. Therefore, we investigated the cytotoxic effects of various quinone derivatives with structural diversity towards a variety of breast cancer cells. We further determined their toxicity in healthy cells to evaluate their drug capability potential. …

Nonoxidative dehydrogenation of propane to propylene using Pt-based supported catalysts is an active research area in catalysis because catalyst attributes of Pt sites can be controlled by careful design of active sites. One way to achieve this is by the addition of a second metal that may impart a change in the electron density of active sites, which in turn affects catalytic performance. In this study, bimetallic Pt and B sites were deposited on powder SiO2 using atomic layer deposition (ALD). Boron was first deposited on SiO2 via half-cycle ALD using triisoproplyborate as the B source. Following calcination, Pt deposition …
