Knowledge-Grounded Natural Language Understanding Of Biomedical And Clinical Literature, Xindi Wang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Natural Language Understanding (NLU) resides at the intersection of artificial intelligence, linguistics, and computer science, with the goal of empowering machines to comprehend and interpret human languages in a way that is both significant and contextually pertinent. The intrinsic complexity of human language, marked by its subtleties, cultural variances, and dependence on context, poses a significant challenge to NLU. The real world is a vast repository of knowledge that encompasses not only facts but also complex relationships, dynamic concepts, and cultural subtleties. This external knowledge represents the context that is often implicitly assumed in human communication. For machines to fully …

Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm Based On Trap Label And Lazy Ant, Wei Zhang, Yuefeng Jiang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Many existing strategies for improving particle swarm optimization (PSO) fall short in assisting particles trapped in local optima and experiencing premature convergence to recover optimization performance. In response, an adaptive particle swarm optimization algorithm based on trap label and lazy ant (TLLA-APSO) is proposed. Secondly, the lazy ant optimization strategy is employed to diversify particle velocity and enhance population diversity. Finally, the inertia cognition strategy introduces historical position into velocity updates, promoting path diversity and particle exploration while effectively mitigating the …

A Deep Fuzzy Classifier Based On Feature Transform And Reconstruction, Rui Yin, Wei Lu, Jianhua Yang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To obtain a classifier with good classification accuracy and interpretability, a deep fuzzy classifier based on feature transform and reconstruction (FR-DFC) is proposed. In FR-DFC, several fuzzy systems (FT_FS) for feature transform and a multi-prototype fuzzy classification system (MPRFD_FS) are stacked together to realize the classification process of the model, based on the hierarchically stacked thought originated from deep learning. Specifically, the stacked FT_FSs explore the hidden features in the data by transferring data from the original data space to the high-level feature space. MPRFD_FS, on the other hand, implements classification based on multiple prototypes that characterize the distribution …

Objectives. The increasing demand for computing skills has led to a rapid rise in the development of new computer science (CS) curricula, many with the goal of equitably broadening participation of underrepresented students in CS. While such initiatives are vital, factors outside of the school environment also play a role in influencing students' interests. In this paper, we examined the effects of students' perceived parental support on their interest in computer programming and explored the mechanisms through which this effect may have been established as students participated in an introductory CS instructional unit.

Participants. This instructional unit was …

Doing Personal Laps: Llm-Augmented Dialogue Construction For Personalized Multi-Session Conversational Search, Hideaki Joko, Shubham Chatterjee, Andrew Ramsay, Arjen P. De Vries, Jeff Dalton, Faegheh Hasibi

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The future of conversational agents will provide users with personalized information responses. However, a significant challenge in developing models is the lack of large-scale dialogue datasets that span multiple sessions and reflect real-world user preferences. Previous approaches rely on experts in a wizard-of-oz setup that is difficult to scale, particularly for personalized tasks. Our method, LAPS, addresses this by using large language models (LLMs) to guide a single human worker in generating personalized dialogues. This method has proven to speed up the creation process and improve quality. LAPS can collect large-scale, human-written, multi-session, and multi-domain conversations, including extracting user preferences. …

Designing Self-Management For And With Persons Living With Dementia Osullivan, Dympna, Dympna O'Sullivan, Michael Wilson, Damon Berry, Orla Moran, Siobhan O,Neill, Ciaran Nugent, Jonathan Turner, Julie Doyle

Articles

Promoting high quality of life for persons living with dementia has emerged as a central goal in global public health agendas. The emphasis has shifted from extending life to actively enhancing overall well-being by postponing or preventing additional disability. This represents a departure from traditional medical perspectives on dementia to a more socially-oriented approach, placing a strong focus on wellbeing.

In parallel, the concept of self-management for people with living dementia has emerged, where this is a person-centred approach in which the individual is empowered and has ownership over the management of their life and condition. Practice recommendations for person-centered …

Survey Of Memory Consolidation Techniques For Video Question Answering, Matthew Couts, Pha Nguyen, Khoa Luu

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Video Question Answering (VideoQA) is a field of research focused on developing models that can engage in natural conversations with humans about the content of videos. Currently, the most successful approaches involve analyzing videos frame-by-frame, which is computationally and memory-intensive. To imitate human memory, the Atkinson-Shiffrin memory model can formulate the machine’s video understanding capability through Vision-Language Models. Reducing the number of frames processed by the model is a crucial operation in this approach category and can be handled by a memory consolidation algorithm. The memory consolidation algorithm should be able to determine the keyframes to transfer from short-term to …

Design Of Long-Distance Entanglement Distribution Protocols For Quantum Networks, Stav Haldar Jul 2024

Design Of Long-Distance Entanglement Distribution Protocols For Quantum Networks, Stav Haldar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Future quantum technologies such as quantum communication, quantum sensing, and distributed quantum computation, will rely on networks of shared entanglement between spatially separated nodes. Distributing entanglement between these nodes, especially over long distances, currently remains a challenge, due to limitations resulting from the fragility of quantum systems, such as photon losses, non-ideal measurements, and quantum memories with short coherence times. In the absence of full-scale fault-tolerant quantum error correction, which can in principle overcome these limitations, we should understand the extent to which we can circumvent these limitations. In this work, we provide improved protocols and policies for entanglement distribution …
