Sensor-Assisted Video Mapping Of The Seafloor, Yuri Rzhanov, Lloyd C. Huff, Randy G. Cutter Jr., Larry A. Mayer
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
In recent years video surveys have become an increasingly important ground-truthing of acousticseafloor characterization and benthic habitat mapping studies. However, the ground-truthing and detailed characterization provided by video are still typically done using sparse sample imagery supplemented by physical samples. Combining single video frames in a seamless mosaic can provide a tool by which imagery has significant areal coverage, while at the same time showing small fauna and biological features at mm resolution. The generation of such a mosaic is a challenging task due to height variations of the imaged terrain and decimeter scale knowledge of camera position. This paper …
Object-Oriented Architecture For Concurrent Processes In A Port Simulation, Reejo Mathew
Object-Oriented Architecture For Concurrent Processes In A Port Simulation, Reejo Mathew
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
An architectural model to represent the resources and infrastructure within a cargo terminal, as well as to support the concurrent but opposite flow of cargo within the terminal, is presented in this thesis. The model supports the configuration of an individual cargo terminal according to its characteristics, as well as the processing involved in the simultaneous flow of cargo in opposite directions through the terminal. This is useful in the analysis of the flow of military cargo and aids the decision-making process to increase the efficiency and throughput of any military operation. This model has been developed with the aim …
Study Of Transport Properties Of Inas Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Satyanadh Gundimada
Study Of Transport Properties Of Inas Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Satyanadh Gundimada
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The present research is aimed at ascertaining the usefulness of InAs semiconductor material for single photon avalanche photo detectors operating in the Geiger mode at 2 μm wavelengths. InAs is considered as the material suitable for the purpose because of its less bandgap and lower effective mass of the electrons when compared to other semiconductor materials presently in use. Hence, theoretically transient transport properties of bulk InAs are superior and the velocity overshoot phenomena stronger. InAs is a relatively less explored material when compared to other materials like GaAs. The choice of the material is justified with thorough exploration of …

Approaching High Fidelity Human Tracking And Representation In Interactive Virtual Environments, Taimur K. Khan
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis revolves around an Office of Naval Research (ONR) grant known as Virtual Environments for Training (VET). The primary goal is to determine the effectiveness of an immersive environment for training; the secondary goal is to compare the results of this study to a similar study conducted in an environment that is less immersive.
Effectiveness will be determined by the performance of trainees manning a virtual military checkpoint. A four-wall immersive environment employing cave technology will be compared to a three dimensional desktop version of the scenarios employed in the more immersive environment. In order to make this comparison, …

Support For Statistical Analysis Of The Configurable Port Simulation (Cports), Saurav Mazumdar
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The primary objective of this thesis is to provide support for statistical analysis of CPortS: a transportation logistics simulation, which models the movement of military traffic through seaports and the interaction of the traffic with port infrastructure. By any standards, CPortS is a very large, data intensive simulation. It provides capabilities for analyzing many important issues such as port clearance and throughput. CPortS was classically run in single run mode. Only a single replication of the simulation was performed and conclusions were drawn from the results obtained. Users and analysts of CPortS performed multiple runs only to see the effect …
Performance Evaluation Of Path Searching Heuristics For Multicast Qos Routing, Daniel Zappala, Dayi Zhou
Performance Evaluation Of Path Searching Heuristics For Multicast Qos Routing, Daniel Zappala, Dayi Zhou
Faculty Publications
Quality of Service routing for multicast enables a group member to find and install a branch of the multicast tree that can meet its QoS constraints. The most promising protocols in this area use receiver-oriented path searching heuristics to find feasible routes. In this paper, we examine the performance of the path searching heuristics used by these protocols, to determine which techniques are the most effective. We find that several low-overhead path searching heuristics are effective, and that generic path searching can work as well as targeted, QoS-specific searching.

Bluetooth: An Emerging Technology For Wireless Personal Area Networks, Eric S. Hall, Charles D. Knutson, David K. Vawdrey
Faculty Publications
Look under your desk or behind your computer. See that rat’s nest of wires and cables? Almost every cable or wire that tethers us to our devices (or our devices to one another) is unnecessary. Bluetooth wireless technology promises to reduce the cabling chaos that afflicts us all. Bluetooth is a recently developed technology that uses radio frequency (RF) transceivers to provide point-to-multipoint wireless connectivity within a personal space. Bluetooth was designed for both voice and data communication at low per-unit costs while consuming little power. To achieve the cost and power goals, Bluetooth limits connectivity to a sphere of …

Recurrent Neural Networks And Algorithms For Reconstruction Of Images From Noisy And/Or Partial Data, Ming-Jung Seow
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, modular architectures and neighborhood-distance based learning algorithms for fast and effective convergence with increased storage capacity of Hopfield neural networks are presented. The main objective of this research work is to better understand the function of recurrent neural networks and the influence of modularity within a network, and to design, implement, and test the performance of modular Hopfield neural networks for pattern association. Mathematical analysis and results are provided to show that the speed, storage capacity, and generalization capability of the recurrent networks are improved significantly by incorporating the modular architectures and learning algorithms. A new ratio …
Yet Another Algorithm For Pitch Tracking (Yaapt), Kavita Kasi
Yet Another Algorithm For Pitch Tracking (Yaapt), Kavita Kasi
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis presents a pitch detection algorithm that is extremely robust for both high quality and telephone speech. The kernel method for this algorithm is the Normalized Cross Correlation (NCCF) reported by David Talkin [16]. Major innovations include: processing of the original acoustic signal and a nonlinearly processed version of the signal to partially restore very weak F0 components; intelligent peak picking to select multiple F0 candidates and assign merit factors; and, incorporation of highly robust pitch contours obtained from smoothed versions of low frequency portions of spectrograms. Dynamic programming is used to find the ''best" pitch track among all …
A Multilevel Neural Network Architecture For Digital Implementation Of A Face Recognition System Based On Eigenface Approach, Linda Rajan
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The design and development of the digital implementation of a multilevel feed forward neural network architecture for face recognition based on statistical features representing Eigenfaces is presented in this thesis. The architecture is divided into three parts: feature extractor, classifier and identifier, The Eigenface extractor architecture is developed based on an efficient design strategy in which all the M weight values corresponding to the Eigenfaces are generated simultaneously from M images representing the Eigen vectors and the test input image. The multilayer neural network classifier is trained using error backpropagation algorithm. A novel multilevel digital architecture is developed for the …

Development Of A Systems Engineering Model Of The Chemical Separations Process, Yitung Chen, Randy Clarksean, Darrell Pepper
Separations Campaign (TRP)
The AAA program is developing technology for the transmutation of nuclear waste to address many of the long-term disposal issues. An integral part of this program is the proposed chemical separations scheme. This process, as envisioned by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) researchers, will be outlined later in this report.
Nearly all issues related to risks to future generations arising from long-term disposal of such spent nuclear fuel is attributable to ~1% of its content. This 1% is made up primarily of plutonium, neptunium, americium, and curium (the transuranic elements) and long-lived isotopes of iodine and technetium created as products from …

Over the past several years there has been an increasing recognition of the shortcomings of message-passing data-processing systems that compute data without understanding, and the vastly superior potential capabilities of information-centric systems that incorporate an internal information model with sufficient context to support a useful level of automatic reasoning.
The key difference between a data-processing and an information-centric environment is the ability to embed in the information-centric software some understanding of the information being processed. The term information-centric refers to the representation of information in the computer, not to the way it is actually stored in a digital machine. This …

Proceedings Of The 2002 Onr Decision-Support Workshop Series: Transformation..., Collaborative Agent Design Research Center
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
In August of 1998 the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) of the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), approached Dr. Phillip Abraham of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) with the proposal for an annual workshop focusing on emerging concepts in decision-support systems for military applications. The proposal was considered timely by the ONR Logistics Program Office for at least two reasons. First, rapid advances in information systems technology over the past decade had produced distributed, collaborative computer-assistance capabilities with profound potential for providing meaningful support to military decision makers. Indeed, some systems based on …
The Role Of Discovery In Context-Building Decision-Support Systems, Steven J. Gollery, Jens G. Pohl
The Role Of Discovery In Context-Building Decision-Support Systems, Steven J. Gollery, Jens G. Pohl
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
There are many sources of on-line information available to those responsible for making decisions in complex situations. However, most of that information is either intended for human use or is available only in custom or proprietary formats. Both of these conditions reduce the ability of computer software to perform automatic reasoning about this information. As a result, the usefulness of on-line information in intelligent decision-support systems is currently limited to the few sources that are implemented specifically for those systems. The vast mass of sources that do not fit that description are virtually invisible.
Current practices for integrating multiple information …
Data, Information, And Knowledge In The Context Of Sils, Michael A. Zang, Jens G. Pohl
Data, Information, And Knowledge In The Context Of Sils, Michael A. Zang, Jens G. Pohl
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
Data, information, and knowledge are becoming increasingly common terms in the literature of the software industry. This terminology originated some time ago in the disciplines of cognitive science and artificial intelligence to reference three closely related but distinct concepts. Traditionally, mainstream software engineering has lumped all three concepts together as data and has only recently begun to distinguish between them. Unfortunately, the popular desire to distinguish between data, information, and knowledge within the mainstream has blurred the individual meanings of the words to the point where there is no longer a clear-cut distinction between them for most people. This problem …
Performance Evaluation Of Linear Hash Structure Model In A Nested Transaction Environment, Malik Ayed Tubaishat, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Bharat Bhargava
Performance Evaluation Of Linear Hash Structure Model In A Nested Transaction Environment, Malik Ayed Tubaishat, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Bharat Bhargava
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
We design and implement a linear hash algorithm in nested transaction environment to handle large amount of data with increased concurrency. Nested transactions allow parallel execution of transactions, and handle transaction aborts, thus provides more concurrency and efficient recovery. We use object-oriented methodology in the implementation which helped in designing the programming components independently. In our model, buckets are modeled as objects and linear hash operations are modeled as methods. The papers contribution is novel in the sense that the system, to our knowledge, is the first to implement linear hashing in a nested transactions environment. We have built a …

So wrote the great philosopher and poet Jorge Augustín Nicolás Ruiz de Santayana in his essay" The Elements and Function of Poetry."[1] Without doubt, the advent of the early Web unleashed a mania, an unreasonable recklessness that to this day resists being swept back under the rug. How can we tease" sanity" out of the Web? Can the historian put this madness to good use?
Heterogeneous Self-Reconfiguring Robotics: Ph.D. Thesis Proposal, Robert C. Fitch
Heterogeneous Self-Reconfiguring Robotics: Ph.D. Thesis Proposal, Robert C. Fitch
Computer Science Technical Reports
Self-reconfiguring robots are modular systems that can change shape, or "reconfigure," to match structure to task. They comprise many small, discrete, often identical modules that connect together and that are minimally actuated. Global shape transformation is achieved by composing local motions. Systems with a single module type, known as "homogeneous" systems, gain fault tolerance, robustness and low production cost from module interchangeability. However, we are interested in "heterogeneous" systems, which include multiple types of modules such as those with sensors, batteries or wheels. We believe that heterogeneous systems offer the same benefits as homogeneous systems with the added ability to …

Digital Image Similarity For Geo-Spatial Knowledge Management, James Carswell
Digital Image Similarity For Geo-Spatial Knowledge Management, James Carswell
Conference papers
The amount and availability of high-quality geo-spatial image data, such as digital satellite and aerial photographs, is increasing dramatically. Task-based management of such visual information and associated knowledge is a central concern for organisations that rely on digital imagery. We are developing geo-spatial knowledge management techniques that employ case-based reasoning as the core methodology. In order to provide effective retrieval of task-based experiences that center around geo-spatial imagery, we need to forward novel similarity metrics for directly comparing the image components of experience cases. Based on work in geo-spatial image database retrieval, we are building an effective similarity metric for …

Analysis Of A Campus-Wide Wireless Network, David Kotz, Kobby Essien
Computer Science Technical Reports
Understanding usage patterns in wireless local-area networks (WLANs) is critical for those who develop, deploy, and manage WLAN technology, as well as those who develop systems and application software for wireless networks. This paper presents results from the largest and most comprehensive trace of network activity in a large, production wireless LAN. For eleven weeks we traced the activity of nearly two thousand users drawn from a general campus population, using a campus-wide network of 476 access points spread over 161 buildings. Our study expands on those done by Tang and Baker, with a significantly larger and broader population. We …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
This paper discusses a technique used for construction of high-resolution image mosaic from a videosequence and the synchronously logged camera attitude information. It allows one to infer geometric characteristics of the imaged terrain and hence improve the mosaic quality and reduce the computational burden. The technique is demonstrated using numerical modeling and is applied to videodata collected on Rainsford Island, Mass. Calculation of the transformation relating consecutive image frames is an essential operation affecting reliability of the whole mosaicing process. Improvements to the algorithm are suggested, which significantly decrease the possibility of convergence to an inappropriate solution.

A Label-Switching Packet Forwarding Architecture For Multi-Hop Wireless Lans, Arup Acharya, Archan Misra, Sorav Bansal
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A router in wired network typically requires multiple network interfaces to act as a router or a forwarding node. In an ad-hoc multi-hop wireless network on the other hand, any node with a wireless network interface card can operate as a router or a forwarding node, since it can receive a packet from a neighboring node, do a route lookup based on the packet's destination IP address, and then transmit the packet to another neighboring node using the same wireless interface. This paper investigates a combined medium access and next-hop address lookup based on fixed length labels (instead of IP …

Personalized Classification For Keyword-Based Category Profiles, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim, Wee-Keong Ng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Personalized classification refers to allowing users to define their own categories and automating the assignment of documents to these categories. In this paper, we examine the use of keywords to define personalized categories and propose the use of Support Vector Machine (SVM) to perform personalized classification. Two scenarios have been investigated. The first assumes that the personalized categories are defined in a flat category space. The second assumes that each personalized category is defined within a pre-defined general category that provides a more specific context for the personalized category. The training documents for personalized categories are obtained from a training …

Cryptanalysis Of Some Hash Functions Based On Block Ciphers And Codes, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Robert Huijie Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
At PKC 2000, Inoue and Sakurai proposed some methods to design hash functions from block ciphers and codes (block codes and convolutional codes). They claimed that their hash functions are secure: 2(d-1)m/2 encryptions are necessary to find a collision, where d and m are the minimal distance of the code and the block size of block cipher, respectively. However, we show in this paper that a collision could be found with about a.2m encryptions, where a is a small number.

An Environment For Mobile Context-Based Hypermedia Retrieval, James Carswell
Conference papers
This paper proposes a novel solution to querying hyperlinked multimedia cultural heritage datasets based on the user's context. Context in this sense is defined as the user's location in virtual space and the particular mobile device being modeled together with user preferences or profile. The purpose is to automatically push relevant data from the database server to the client based on this comprehensive definition of the user's context. Consideration in regard to which mobile device is currently being modeled is a primary filter for determining what data will be sent and in what format. For example, image data will not …
