A Technique To Calculate Complex Electromagnetic Fields By Using The Finite Element Method, Davood Asgharian Jan 1978

A Technique To Calculate Complex Electromagnetic Fields By Using The Finite Element Method, Davood Asgharian

Dissertations and Theses

A computer program based on Maxwell's equations is developed to calculate two-dimensional complex potentials by the Finite Element Method. This study offers a solution to a complex continuum problem by allowing a subdivision into a series of simple interrelated problems. The region of interest is divided into triangular elements. For each node in the grid, the Finite Element Method is used to set up an equation for the potential as a function of those of the surrounding nodes. All these equations are solved by the Gaussian Elimination Method. For increased accuracy this method requires a high degree of division of …

Generalized Connectors, Nicholas Pippenger Jan 1978

Generalized Connectors, Nicholas Pippenger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

An $n$-connector is an acyclic directed graph having $n$ inputs and $n$ outputs and satisfying the following condition: given any one-to-one correspondence between inputs and distinct outputs, there exists a set of vertex-disjoint paths that join each input to the corresponding output. It is known that the minimum possible number of edges in an $n$-connector lies between lower and upper bounds that are asymptotic to $3n\log _3 n$ and $6n\log _3 n$ respectively. A generalized $n$-connector satisfies the following stronger condition: given any one-to-many correspondence between inputs and disjoint sets of outputs, there exists a set of vertex-disjoint trees that …

Dialectics And Catastrophe, Martin Zwick Jan 1978

Dialectics And Catastrophe, Martin Zwick

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The three classical principles of Hegelian and Marxist dialectics, (1) the transformation of quantity into quality, (2) the unity and struggle of opposites, and (3) the negation of negation, can be modeled with the Catastrophe Theory of Renép Thorn and E. C. Zeeman, especially with the ‘elementary catastrophes’ known as the cusp and the butterfly.

A Consciousness Simulation Model, R. Edward Mitchell Jr. Jun 1977

A Consciousness Simulation Model, R. Edward Mitchell Jr.

Theses

The thesis titled "A Consciousness Simulation Model" by R. Edward Mitchell (1977) explores the theoretical design of a digital model aimed at simulating human consciousness. The model is structured around a collection of independent processing modules that mimic various human cognitive and emotional processes. These modules include components for thought selection, ego/achievement, memory, and emotion processing, which interact with one another in a fashion that simulates aspects of human thought and behavior.

Mitchell's primary goal is to develop a system that could behave more like a human, particularly in communication and decision-making processes, to improve human-machine interaction. The thesis highlights …

A Christian Point Of View, A. Wayne Roberts

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977

Does the fact that you are a Christian affect the way that you teach mathematics? This paper seeks to answer the question, what contributions can a mathematics teacher in a Christian school make to the distinctive purpose of such a school?

Skolem’S Paradox And The Predestination/Free-Will Discussion, Gene B. Chase Apr 1977

Skolem’S Paradox And The Predestination/Free-Will Discussion, Gene B. Chase

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977

The purpose of this paper is to show that both sides of the predestination/free-will discussion are admissible in a way that is more profound than simply the wave-particle duality of light. In wave-particle duality there are two competing physical models of reality which are contradictory. This paper will show that not a contradiction but a difference in viewpoint is the fundamental issue in the discussion of predestination and free will. A discussion of Skolem’s paradox is helpful in this demonstration.

Current Work On Mathematical Truth, Michael Detlefsen

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977

The overall aim of this paper is to serve as an introduction to the work currently being done on the topic of mathematical truth. It provides an overview of the major developments concerning mathematical truth and also evaluates those developments as potential contributions to mathematician’s understanding of the subject.

Wanted: Christian Perspectives In The Philosophy Of Mathematics, Arthur F. Holmes

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977

This paper describes the three types of theory about universals, beginning in each case with a classical historical formulation and moving to its restatement in recent analytic philosophy. It will then suggest ways in which Christian perspectives bear on theories of universals and so on mathematics.

Recent Problems In The Foundationsof Mathematics, Terence H. Perciante Apr 1977

Recent Problems In The Foundationsof Mathematics, Terence H. Perciante

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977

This paper examines the foundational crises that have haunted twentieth-century mathematics, beginning with a brief review of the effects generated by Gauss, Lobachevsky, and Bolyai who each developed non-Euclidean parallel axiom. Though of mathematical interest in their own right, the significance of the new geometries was greatly magnified when it was discerned that they could be used to adequately model physical space, even to the extent that Einstein’s theory of relativity later employed as its model a non-Euclidean geometry developed by Riemann. The question that obviously presented itself was how could any given geometry be called true when it and …
