The Origin Of Daemonelix, Alvin Leonard Lugn Oct 1941

The Origin Of Daemonelix, Alvin Leonard Lugn

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Attention is called to the controversy of some years ago over the origin of the "Devil's Corkscrews." The problem may have appeared unimportant then, but now a correct understanding of the paleoecology of Harrison time may hinge on the explanation of these strange "fossils." The characteristics of Daemonelix are briefly reviewed, they are compared to the lianas of the modern tropical jungle, and the postulated conditions of Harrison sedimentation are believed to supply an adequate explanation for the presence of fossil rodent remains in the Daemonelices. The possibility of a vegetal origin of these fossils is believed to be demonstrated.

The Magnesium Content Of The Rocks Of The Upper Cretaceous System Of Ellis And Osborne Counties, Kansas, Robert Funston Jul 1941

The Magnesium Content Of The Rocks Of The Upper Cretaceous System Of Ellis And Osborne Counties, Kansas, Robert Funston

Master's Theses

The recent impetus given industry by the national defense emergency has made everyone more or less conscious of the great importance of minerals. During the past few years some of the industrial leaders of Kansas have been attempting to promote the natural resources of the state. Some minerals once considered of little or no value are now being developed. For many years the limestone rocks of Western Kansas have been used for building purposes. Until recently little work has been done on the chemical composition of these rocks. The author has decided to continue the study by analyzing the rocks …

Will Russia Win The War?, Alvin Leonard Lugn Jul 1941

Will Russia Win The War?, Alvin Leonard Lugn

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

As this is written, Russia is not in the war; nevertheless, she may eventually win the war. It may not be immediately, it may not be for a generation, it may not be for fifty or more years, and it may be very soon. The "War" may not even be the present holocaust which engulfs Europe; but eventually Russia may win, even though new battles may be won and lost and perhaps much more blood spilled in the meantime; even a German victory may intervene with far-flung domina- tion in all of the continents.

Russia possesses unmeasured elements of strength …

The Feeding Habits Of Gambusia Affinis Affinis, With Special Reference To The Malaria Mosquito, Anopheles Quadrimaculatus, A.D. Hess, Clarence M. Tarzwell Jun 1941

The Feeding Habits Of Gambusia Affinis Affinis, With Special Reference To The Malaria Mosquito, Anopheles Quadrimaculatus, A.D. Hess, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The viviparous top minnow, Gambusia affinis affinis (Baird and Girard), has for many years been considered an important predator of the immature stages of mosquitoes. Various field workers have reported on the value of this species in controlling both anopheline and culicine mosquitoes, but few detailed studies have been made. Probably the most detailed of these has been that of Hildebrand (1925). His investigations were made during the summers of 1921-24 in the vicinity of Augusta, Ga., with the subspecies G. affinis holbrooki. Employing the common dipper method, he compared the densities of anopheline and culicine larvae and pupae in …

Some Investigations On Quantitative Measurement Of Amalgamation, Charles Moore Jun 1941

Some Investigations On Quantitative Measurement Of Amalgamation, Charles Moore

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Amalgamation is a process in which precious metals are collected by mercury. The exact way in which the mercury holds the other metals is not positively known. It is probable that a series of intermetallic compounds form. Very little work has been done so far on the theory of amalgamation.

The Geographic Distribution Of Azotobacter And Rhizobium Meliloti In Nebraska Soils In Relation To Certain Environmental Factors, H. B. Peterson, T. H. Goodding Jun 1941

The Geographic Distribution Of Azotobacter And Rhizobium Meliloti In Nebraska Soils In Relation To Certain Environmental Factors, H. B. Peterson, T. H. Goodding

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

In this investigation a survey of Nebraska soils has been made in order to determine the distribution of the aerobic nonsymbiotic and symbiotic nitrogen fixers of the genera Azotobacter and Rhizobium respectively. In connection with this survey, some of the characteristics of the soils which may bring about this distribution were studied. Up to this time practically no research has been reported on the microflora of the soils of Nebraska. Hence there is little basis for predicting the activity of these organisms under environmental conditions as they exist here. It is hoped that this work will not only supply some …

Basic Information In The Granitic Rocks Of The Boulder Batholith, Clifford G. Sherwin May 1941

Basic Information In The Granitic Rocks Of The Boulder Batholith, Clifford G. Sherwin

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Dark fine grained basic masses of rock are found in nearly every part of the Boulder Batholith, these commonly being referred to as inclusions, segregations, autoliths, and various other names. The origin, distribution, and composition of the dark inclusions form the basis for this report.

Some Chromite Deposits In Madison County, Montana, Russell H. W. Chadwick May 1941

Some Chromite Deposits In Madison County, Montana, Russell H. W. Chadwick

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Chromite occurs in Madison County, Montana, in two areas, one three miles southwest of Silver Star, the other five miles southeast of Sheridan. The ore bodies are small, lenticular masses surrounded by metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of the pre-Cambrian Cherry Creek series. The ore was deposited from the hydrothermal solutions which serpentinized the surrounding metamorphic host rocks.

The Electrowinning Of Manganese From Rhodochrosite, Lloyd L. Thompson May 1941

The Electrowinning Of Manganese From Rhodochrosite, Lloyd L. Thompson

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Manganese is commonly known to be a metal of great strategic importance. It is essential in the production of all steels, first as a scavenger to remove oxygen and sulfur, and second as an alloying element in wear-resistant steels.

Stratigraphy And Paleontology Of The Eagle Formation In Montana And Adjacent Areas, Raymond Thompson May 1941

Stratigraphy And Paleontology Of The Eagle Formation In Montana And Adjacent Areas, Raymond Thompson

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

A conspicuous two hundred and fifty foot sandstone of central Montana, known as the Eagle Formation, constitutes part of the some five thousand feet of Cretaceous sediments in the state. It stands out in steep cliffs which stretch for many miles in the outcrop area from Wyoming to Canada.
