Using Lead-210, Bismuth-210, And Polonium-210 To Estimate Particulate Organic Carbon Flux To The Benthos Of Lake Michigan, Gage Justman Hunter Aug 2024

Using Lead-210, Bismuth-210, And Polonium-210 To Estimate Particulate Organic Carbon Flux To The Benthos Of Lake Michigan, Gage Justman Hunter

Theses and Dissertations

210Bi is a short-lived (t1/2: 5.01 days) naturally occurring radionuclide and a potential tracer of particle dynamics in high flux aquatic environments such as lakes, coastal oceans, and continental shelves. While its parent, 210Pb, and daughter, 210Po, have been used to estimate particle removal rates from the ocean, few studies have investigated the behavior of 210Bi in aquatic systems or its use as a tracer of particle export fluxes. In this study, a time series experiment was conducted where 210Pb, 210Bi, and 210Po activities were measured in rainwater and in the water column on the slope of southwestern Lake Michigan. …

Use Of Geomagnetic Paleointensity As A Correlation Tool In The Eastern Snake River Plain Lava Flows, Melissa Marie Sikes Aug 2024

Use Of Geomagnetic Paleointensity As A Correlation Tool In The Eastern Snake River Plain Lava Flows, Melissa Marie Sikes

Theses and Dissertations

The Snake River Plain volcanic province stretches 600 km from eastern Oregon across southern Idaho and into northwest Wyoming. Over the past ~14 million years, olivine tholeiitic lava flows have accumulated. To assess ongoing volcanic hazards, it is important to quantify the number, timing, and size of eruptive events. This assessment requires correlating lava flows across coreholes within the Eastern Snake River Plain. Previous paleomagnetic research applied paleomagnetic inclinations to correlate flows between coreholes. This study tests whether using geomagnetic paleointensity – in addition to inclination – can increase confidence in the correlation of these flows. Pilot samples were retrieved …

Paleoenvironmental Constraints On Pleistocene Ice Sheets From Glacio-Volcanic Deposits In Northeast Iceland, Cameron Essex Aug 2024

Paleoenvironmental Constraints On Pleistocene Ice Sheets From Glacio-Volcanic Deposits In Northeast Iceland, Cameron Essex

Theses and Dissertations

There are indications that the melt-back of glaciers due to climate change can trigger new eruptions for volcanoes and magma reservoirs that rest under ice sheets. The ideal locality on Earth to study volcano-ice interactions is Iceland, an active volcanic island that has been totally covered in previous ice ages. Eruptions under glaciers produce distinctive landforms called tuyas, or table mountains, which can provide an estimate of ice thickness at the time of eruption. One research tool used to investigate ice thickness is volcanic glass, which is formed from rapid cooling of magma, and thus is abundant in the majority …

Spectral Characterization Of Volcanic Materials On Earth And Venus, C.J. Leight Aug 2024

Spectral Characterization Of Volcanic Materials On Earth And Venus, C.J. Leight

Doctoral Dissertations

Earth and Venus are dominated by volcanic landforms, making accurate characterization of the diversity of igneous compositions on the planets’ surfaces key to understanding their geologic histories. Spectral observations in the visible-near-infrared (VNIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) provide rapid characterization of surface composition and mineralogy but are not without limitations. Spectra are sensitive to a number of factors, including observation geometry, collection method (emissivity or reflectance), grain size, phase assemblage, and composition. It is impossible to constrain the various effects of all factors when interpreting orbital data, and simplifications are made, guided by laboratory investigations.

A common simplification is to ignore …

High Temperature Alteration Conditions Within Lava Tubes: An Analogue For Venus Surface Geology, Dylan Alexander Childs Aug 2024

High Temperature Alteration Conditions Within Lava Tubes: An Analogue For Venus Surface Geology, Dylan Alexander Childs

Theses and Dissertations

Scientific exploration of other planetary bodies comes with many limitations, and Venus is no exception. Average surface temperatures of ∼460°C and an atmospheric pressure of ∼96 bars has severely limited the longevity of any instruments sent to the surface of Venus. Furthermore, with an atmosphere composed of ∼96.5% CO2, there are only three wavelength windows in the near infrared region that can be used to measure the mineralogical composition of the surface. Due to these constraints, our understanding of Venus’ surface mineralogy is severely limited and to date direct measurements of its geologic composition are limited to a handful of …

Dynamics Of Climate And Tectonics On Surface Processes And Their Sedimentary Archives In The Colorado Plateau And Basin And Range, Usa And The Calabrian Forearc, Sicily, Natalie M. Tanski Aug 2024

Dynamics Of Climate And Tectonics On Surface Processes And Their Sedimentary Archives In The Colorado Plateau And Basin And Range, Usa And The Calabrian Forearc, Sicily, Natalie M. Tanski

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Landscapes change over time in response to movements of the Earth’s crust and the effects of climate. This dissertation examines how these factors shape different landscapes, focusing on erosion of river canyons in elevated plateaus, how the transport history in quartz sand may be encoded in its properties, and how a paleo-delta has formed in response to sea-level change and fault displacement. I use dating techniques, field methods, and topographic analyses to offer insight into erosional patterns and rates in different landscapes.

Rivers can take a long time to adjust to changes in boundary conditions, even after those changes have …

Polygenetic Cave Sedimentation And Speleogenesis In The Mccloud Limestone Of Northern California, Niles Lathrop Aug 2024

Polygenetic Cave Sedimentation And Speleogenesis In The Mccloud Limestone Of Northern California, Niles Lathrop

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Caves in the Permian-aged, McCloud Limestone of the Klamath Mountains of Northern California preserve a diverse range of clastic sediments that represent broad-scale variations in paleo-hydrologic conditions and transport mechanisms that hint at varied modes of speleogenesis through local landscape development. Caves in the McCloud Limestone exhibit a range of cave passage geometries and arrangements that suggests periods of both hypogene and epigene cave development through temporal and spatial scales. This study evaluates the variability in the distribution, mineralogy, and transport mechanisms of clastic-cave sediments in seven hydrologically-distinct caves in the McCloud Limestone to establish relationships between clastic-cave sedimentation and …

Comprehensive Climate Vulnerability Assessment Of A Regional Karst Landscape For Hazard Mitigation Planning, Kara Brunot Aug 2024

Comprehensive Climate Vulnerability Assessment Of A Regional Karst Landscape For Hazard Mitigation Planning, Kara Brunot

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Climate change is the global phenomena affecting all sectors of society by creating conditions more conducive for the occurrence of extreme weather events. It is projected that the intensity and frequency of events will increase. Flooding, in particular, is projected to increase in frequency due to more intense precipitation events. Karst landscapes are especially vulnerable to climate change impacts because of their unique hydrology and geology. Karst flooding is most likely to occur from prolonged or intense rain events, which climate change will likely make more feasible. Areas are disproportionately affected by climate change due to population demographics and environmental …

Landuse And Microplastic Transport In Karst Groundwater Of South-Central Kentucky, Katie Norman Aug 2024

Landuse And Microplastic Transport In Karst Groundwater Of South-Central Kentucky, Katie Norman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Groundwater in karst areas is susceptible to contamination from various sources of pollution. Microplastics are a prevalent source of pollution entering groundwater. This study examines karst groundwater in three areas of investigation. One point of interest is an area that is impacted by urban activities, the Lost River Groundwater Basin, which includes water drainage from the City of Bowling Green, Kentucky. Another study location is Great Onyx (GO) Spring, which is a part of the Great Onyx Groundwater Basin located in Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky, and that is relatively unimpacted by urban activities. The third point of interest is …

Development And Application Of The Sinkhole Hazard Risk Index To Inform Karst Policy And Mitigation Planning, Meghan Puente Aug 2024

Development And Application Of The Sinkhole Hazard Risk Index To Inform Karst Policy And Mitigation Planning, Meghan Puente

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Sinkholes are geologic hazards that occur in karst landscapes and can be highly destructive and costly. Sinkhole mitigation plans and development policies are nonexistent at the federal level within the United States and vary significantly at the state level. The lack of a unified standard for sinkhole mitigation planning is partly due to a lack of available data and resources needed to assess sinkhole risk. While there are established sinkhole assessments within the literature, they focus more on the detection and prediction of sinkholes rather than a holistic approach to risk assessment. The goal of this study is to create …

Robust Hydropower Planning Balances Energy Generation, Carbon Emissions And Sediment Connectivity In The Mekong River Basin, M. Tangi, Rafael Schmitt, Rafael M. Almeida, S. Bossi, Alexander S. Flecker, F. Sala, A. Castelletti

School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a framework for strategic dam planning under uncertainty, which includes GHG emissions mitigation as a novel objective. We focus on the Mekong River Basin, a fast‐developing region heavily relying on river‐derived ecosystem services. We employ a multi‐objective evolutionary algorithm to identify strategic dam portfolios for different hydropower expansion targets, using process‐related and statistical models to derive indicators of sediment supply disruption and GHG emissions. We introduce a robust optimization approach that explores variations in optimal portfolio compositions for more than 5,000 state‐of‐ the‐world configurations, regarding sediment origins and trapping and GHG emissions. Thus, we can rank dam projects' …

Accretion Of Warm Chondrules In Weakly Metamorphosed Ordinary Chondrites And Their Subsequent Reprocessing, Alex M. Ruzicka, Richard C. Hugo, Jon M. Friedrich, Michael T. Ream

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

To better understand chondrite accretion and subsequent processes, the textures, crystallography, deformation, and compositions of some chondrite constituents in ten lithologies of different cluster texture strength were studied in seven weakly metamorphosed (Type 3) and variably shocked ordinary chondrites (Ragland—LL3 S1, Tieschitz—H/L3 S1, NWA 5421—LL3 S2, NWA 5205—LL3 S2, NWA 11905—LL3-5 S3, NWA 5781—LL3 S3, NWA 11351—LL3-6 S4) using optical and electron microscopy and microtomography techniques.

Results support a four-stage model for chondrite formation. This includes 1) limited annealing following collisions during chondrule crystallization and rapid cooling in space prior to accretion, as evidenced by olivine microstructures consistent with dislocation …

Shedding Light On Past Ice-Free Intervals In Northwest Greenland: Luminescence Dating Of The Base Of The Camp Century Ice Core, Hawke Woznick Aug 2024

Shedding Light On Past Ice-Free Intervals In Northwest Greenland: Luminescence Dating Of The Base Of The Camp Century Ice Core, Hawke Woznick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The goal of this thesis is to provide greater resolution on the age and character of the subglacial sediment recovered from the base of the Camp Century ice core, northwestern Greenland. Geochemical analysis indicated that the upper sub-ice sediments were geochemically different and experienced greater weathering than the basal unit underlying a one-meter silty ice lens. Analysis of feldspars within the very fine sand fraction indicates they are dominated by potassium feldspar. Sediment was dated using luminescence, which provides an age for the last time sediment was exposed to light. Luminescence analysis returned ages around 420 thousand years old, which …

New Insights Into The Diverse Intraplate Volcanism Present Within The Howland And Baker Island United States Exclusive Economic Zone, Nicholas Foresta Aug 2024

New Insights Into The Diverse Intraplate Volcanism Present Within The Howland And Baker Island United States Exclusive Economic Zone, Nicholas Foresta

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The origin of oceanic volcanism has been attributed to various mechanisms, such as upwelling mantle plumes, lithospheric extension driven decompression melting, and small-scale convective cells in the asthenosphere. Discovering the range of magmatic drivers present in the ocean basins aids in understanding mantle geodynamics and tectonic processes. A recent seafloor exploration campaign within the Howland and Baker Island (HBI) U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ; approximately near the equator and the International Date Line) resulted in the collection of multiple lava flow samples, which offer valuable insights into the complex origins and dynamics of intraplate seamounts. According to current absolute plate …

Effects Of Climate Change On (Semi)-Arid Ecosystems In The Southwestern United States, Charlotte Van Der Nagel Aug 2024

Effects Of Climate Change On (Semi)-Arid Ecosystems In The Southwestern United States, Charlotte Van Der Nagel

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Climate change is considered amongst the most severe threats to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems globally. Ecosystems in the southwestern United States have specifically been impacted by intense drought conditions since 2000. Higher temperatures combined with altered precipitation stresses many ecosystems; however, ecosystem specific responses to such stressors may vary. Here, the effects of climate change on semi-arid ecosystems are analyzed for some of the most vulnerable ecosystems in the southwestern United States: lacustrine, riparian, and dryland ecosystems.

Lakes and reservoirs in arid environments often serve as drinking water sources and recreational areas where high water quality is essential. Climate change …

Image Processing Techniques For Water Droplet Penetration Time And Contact Angle Estimation, Sai Balaji Jai Kumar Aug 2024

Image Processing Techniques For Water Droplet Penetration Time And Contact Angle Estimation, Sai Balaji Jai Kumar

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Water droplet behavior on soil surfaces plays a critical role in numerous environmental processes, including soil erosion, hydrological dynamics, and ecosystem health. Accurate characterization of soil water repellency, quantified by parameters such as water droplet penetration time (WDPT) and contact angles (WDCA), is essential for informed decision-making in agricultural management, forestry practices, and land-use planning. Despite the significance of these parameters, challenges exist in reliably estimating them due to the complex and dynamic nature of soil-water interactions. This thesis address challenges in estimating WDPT and WDCA, by leveraging state-of-the-art image processing techniques and machine learning algorithms. The research focuses on …

Evaluation Of Future Sea-Level Impacts Using A Sharp Interface Saltwater Intrusion Model, Caroline Hiott Aug 2024

Evaluation Of Future Sea-Level Impacts Using A Sharp Interface Saltwater Intrusion Model, Caroline Hiott

All Theses

Saltwater intrusion is a growing problem that is being exacerbated by climate change. Saltwater intrusion is the process by which saltwater moves towards freshwater supplies driven by saltwater’s greater density compared to freshwater. Saltwater intrusion can contribute to the salinization of freshwater resources, degradation of underground storage tanks, communication systems, and pipelines, as well as lead to groundwater flooding (Ketabchi et al., 2016). Numerical modeling can be used to simulate saltwater intrusion along coastal areas. One of the more computationally efficient modeling tools is the sharp interface approach, SWI2, that is a part of the MODFLOW 2005 suite (Werner et …

Exploring Overbank Sediment Deposition Variation In Heavily Modified Floodplains Of The Lower Mississippi River: A Sedimentological And Geophysical Analysis, Seth Fradella Aug 2024

Exploring Overbank Sediment Deposition Variation In Heavily Modified Floodplains Of The Lower Mississippi River: A Sedimentological And Geophysical Analysis, Seth Fradella

Master's Theses

Since the 1930s, the Lower Mississippi River (LMR) has experienced large-scale modifications to the channel profile and surrounding floodplains through dams, dikes, revetments, dredging, and channel cutoffs. Although these changes have improved navigation and reduced flood risk, unanticipated changes to the major flood return period, individual flood severity and duration, and sediment regime have become increasingly apparent and sometimes problematic, such as the 2011 and 2018-2020 floods. Flood control levees along the LMR have reduced the natural floodplain area by 70-90%, resulting in heavily restricted overbank storage capacity of water and sediment. For the same flood events in recent history, …

Assessment Of Enzyme Stability In Subsurface Sediments By Computational Methods, Kambiz Kalhor Aug 2024

Assessment Of Enzyme Stability In Subsurface Sediments By Computational Methods, Kambiz Kalhor

Masters Theses

The microorganisms found in marine subseafloor sediment play a vital role in global carbon and nitrogen cycles, with an estimated 2.9×1029 cells, accounting for about 0.6% of Earth’s total living biomass. These microbes grow at a very slow rate, with carbon turnover occurring over the course of years to thousands of years, about six orders of magnitude slower than sulfate reducing bacteria in pure culture. These slow metabolic rates suggest that the enzymes they produce must also have extended lifespans in order to be effective over such long periods of time. As a result, these enzymes are likely to …

Economics - The Neglected Dimension Of Pasture Disease R&D, N D. Macleod Jul 2024

Economics - The Neglected Dimension Of Pasture Disease R&D, N D. Macleod

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Pasture utilisation underpins a significant contribution of livestock industries to Australia’s economic well-being. Pasture disease represents a direct threat to these enterprises but the economic magnitude of this threat remains largely unknown as the contribution of agricultural economics to pasture disease R&D, management and policy making has been minimal to date. Some insights to explain this apparent neglect are highlighted and a suggestion is made for a multiple disciplinary approach to R&D.

The 'Pendulum Paradigm' - Trends In Nitrogen Fertilizer Use On Temperate Grass/ Clover Pastures, R J. Eckard, F R. Mckenzie, P A. Lane

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Nitrogen fertiliser responses, on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) / white clover (Trifolium repens) dominant pastures, are compared between sub-tropical South Africa and temperate Australia. The data highlight the similarity in inflection point of the response curve, while emphasising the influence of high residual soil N at lower N application rates. The propensity of communities to oscillate between extremes in terms of N fertiliser use on intensive pasture, or the ‘Pendulum Paradigm’ is discussed. Particular reference is made to the dramatic increase in N fertiliser use in dairy pasture of temperate Australia and New Zealand. Emphasis is …

A Vison Of The Future World Food Production And Implications For The Environment And Grasslands, Per Pinstrup Andersen, Rajul Pandya Lorch

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Increases in world population, projected to rise to 8 billion by 2020, and the resultant demand for food places great pressure on our agricultural and aquacultural resources. Anxiety about the future is exacerbated by decreasing grain stocks. Production increases of many commodities are projected to be between 1 and 2% per annum and will generally be higher in developing than in developed countries. Cultivatable land area will increase in some areas of the world but not in others. To cope with these challenges, yield increases will be essential and the application of existing knowledge and technologies will not suffice. Accelerated …
