Asymmetric Slope Compensation For Digital Hybrid Current Mode Control Of Athree-Level Flying Capacitor Buck Converter, Abdulkeri̇m Uğur, Murat Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The three-level flying capacitor (3LFC) buck converter has the potential to provide better efficiency and higher power density as compared to the traditional buck converter. However, due to the flying capacitor?s instability issues, control is challenging. In this paper, the digital hybrid current mode (DHCM) control method, which combines the average and peak current mode control techniques, is modified and implemented to a 3LFC buck converter. For flying capacitor (FC) voltage balancing, a novel asymmetric slope compensation (ASC) technique is presented. The proposed ASC technique achieves FC voltage balancing by adjusting the slope compensation of the two switching pairs asymmetrically, …

A Subsynchronous Resonance Prevention For Dfig-Based Wind Farms, Davood Fateh, Ali Akbar Moti Birjandi, Josep M. Guerrero

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, subsynchronous resonance (SSR) instability was accurately analyzed in doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind farms by the linearization of equations and modal analysis. In addition, the possibility of high compensation for the transmission lines connected to DFIG-based wind farms was provided using a SSR prevention controller (SSRPC). For this purpose, an SSRPC was connected to the output voltage of the grid side converter (GSC) of the DFIG. The GSC output voltage was selected as the connection point of the SSRPC because it directly affects the induction generator effect (IGE) and can be an inhibitor factor in its …

Formation Of A Wireless Sensor Network Using Custom-Designed Sensors Having Lowpower And Low Cost Components, Veysel Yaman Akgün, Engi̇n Maşazade

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we first design a sensor with low power and low cost components, namely an MSP430G2553 microcontroller (MCU), nRF24L01+ communication unit, and a light-dependent resistor (LDR). Then, connecting these custom-designed sensors with a central node, a fusion center (FC), we form a wireless sensor network (WSN) in which sensors measure light intensities and send their measurements to the FC for final inference. Since the default addressing structure of nRF24L01+ can simultaneously connect up to 6 devices, in order to have more connections, we define a new addressing scheme for the transmissions between sensors and the FC. Finally, as …

An Inter-Domain Attack Mitigating Solution, Gökhan Akin, Ozan Bük, Erdem Uçar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Online services on the Internet are increasing day by day, and in parallel, the number of cyber-attacks is rapidly increasing. These attacks are not always about data theft, but they can cause severe damage by denial of service attacks. Intrusion Prevention System products that many organizations use at the border of their enterprise networks are not strong enough to protect against DoS attacks. The typical way to mitigate such attacks is to get support from a service provider. However, a service provider only provides solutions for the traffic originating from itself. If the source of attack is in another ISP …

Estimating Spatiotemporal Focus Of Documents Using Entropy With Pmi, Damla Yaşar, Selma Teki̇r

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Many text documents are spatiotemporal in nature, i.e. contents of a document can be mapped to a specific time period or location. For example, a news article about the French Revolution can be mapped to year 1789 as time and France as place. Identifying this time period and location associated with the document can be useful for various downstream applications such as document reasoning or spatiotemporal information retrieval. In this paper, temporal entropy with pointwise mutual information (PMI) is proposed to estimate the temporal focus of a document. PMI is used to measure the association of words with time expressions. …

Peak Shaving And Technical Loss Minimization In Distribution Grids: Atime-Of-Use-Based Pricing Approach For Distribution Service Tariffs, Osman Bülent Tör, Mahmut Erkut Cebeci̇, Mehmet Koç, Saaed Teimourzadeh, Deren Atli, Simona Vasilica Oprea, Adela Bara

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Deployment of time-of-use (ToU)-based retail energy tariffs (i.e. tariff for energy consumption- not the tariff for distribution service) is a common practice to incentivize consumers to use more energy at off-peak times. Distribution service tariffs (DSTs) are usually time-independent, which results in insensitivity of load to the distribution service cost. However, DST can also be time-dependent, which is studied in this paper. This study presents a methodology to address the effect of ToU pricing (i.e. time-dependent) of DSTs on peak shaving and technical loss minimization in power distribution grids. Here, the main focus is to assess the level of consumers' …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Personalization is a common technique used in Web search engines to improve the effectiveness of retrieval. While personalizing some queries yields significant improvements in user experience by providing a ranking in line with the user preferences, it fails to improve or even degrades the effectiveness for less ambiguous queries. A potential personalization metric could improve search engines by selectively applying personalization. One such measure, click entropy uses the query history and the clicked documents for the query, which might be sparse for some queries. In this article, the topic entropy measure is improved by integrating the user distribution into the …

Finite-Time Dynamic Surface Approach To Nonlinear Systems With Mismatcheduncertainties, Guofa Sun, Yaming Xu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper develops a finite-time dynamic surface control (DSC) scheme for nonlinear systems with mismatched uncertainties via a high-order sliding mode(HOSM) observer. By designing a second-order terminal sliding surface based on the estimated signals, an observer-based sliding mode control (SMC) is designed to counteract the mismatched uncertainties in each step of backstepping. The proposed DSC scheme exhibits the following two attractive features. One is the application of HOSM observer to deal with mismatched system uncertainty functions. This is very different from the traditional approximator-based adaptive methods in dealing with high-order uncertain nonlinear systems. The other is the finite-time convergence of …

Replica Bias Circuit For Common-Source Amplifier, Burak Kelleci̇ Jan 2020

Replica Bias Circuit For Common-Source Amplifier, Burak Kelleci̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A replica bias circuit to set the current of common-source amplifier to reduce the gain variations across process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) changes is proposed. The gain of a common-source amplifier is set by the load resistor and transistor transconductance which is set proportional to a resistor using a constant-gm bias circuit. The success of constant-gm biasing depends on the accuracy of copying of generated current to the transistor. The leakage current at the transistor gate due to the electrostatic discharge protection diodes prevents the matching of the common source transistor current to the constant-gm circuit current. A low-power replica …

Thermoelectric Porous Mof Based Hybrid Materials, Engelbert Redel, Helmut Baumgart

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Porous hybrid materials and MOF (Metal-Organic-Framework) films represent modern designer materials that exhibit many requirements of a near ideal and tunable future thermoelectric (TE) material. In contrast to traditional semiconducting bulk TE materials, porous hybrid MOF templates can be used to overcome some of the constraints of physics in bulk TE materials. These porous hybrid systems are amenable for simulation and modeling to design novel optimized electron-crystal phonon-glass materials with potentially very high ZT (figure of merit) numbers. Porous MOF and hybrid materials possess an ultra-low thermal conductivity, which can be further modulated by phonon engineering within their complex porous …
