Recent Progress On Tio2-Based Anode Materials For Sodium-Ion Batteries, Si-Tian Lian, Jian-Shuai Lv, Qiang Yu, Guang-Wu Hu, Zhuo Chen, Liang Zhou, Li-Qiang Mai

Journal of Electrochemistry

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) represents a stable, low-cost, and nontoxic anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the low electrical conductivity limits its electrochemical activity (specific capacity) and rate capability, hindering its widespread applications. In this article, we show that different crystal forms of TiO2 have different pore structures, resulting in the distinct sodium storage capacities. Accordingly, the article introduces how TiO2 microstructures influence sodium storage. The nanoparticle structure can improve the rate performance of the material due to its short ion diffusion distance, and the internal cavity of the hollow structure is beneficial to cycle stability. …

Recent Progress In Key Materials For Room-Temperature Sodium-Ion Batteries, Fan-Fan Wang, Xiao-Bin Liu, Long Chen, Cheng-Cheng Chen, Yong-Chang Liu, Li-Zhen Fan

Journal of Electrochemistry

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted tremendous attention in large-scale energy storage applications due to their resource advantages. However, Na+ is larger and heavier than Li+, which will limit its reversible reaction with the electrode materials and result in poor electrochemical performance. Thus, developing stable and high-efficiency electrode materials is the key to promoting the practical application of SIBs. Furthermore, the optimization of electrolyte is essential for the construction of high-safety and long-lifespan SIBs. In this review, we mainly summarize the recent advancements of electrode materials and electrolytes for room-temperature SIBs and discuss their challenges and possible resolution strategies. We hope …

Current Status And Prospect Of Battery Configuration In Li-S System, Jia-Hang Chen, Hui-Jun Yang, Cheng Guo, Jiu-Lin Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are incapable of satisfying the increasing demand for emerging electronic devices due to their limited energy density. Among the next-generation batteries, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are becoming a promising energy-storage system due to their high theoretical energy density and natural abundance of sulfur. However, the shuttle of soluble polysulfide intermediates between two electrodes, as well as the problem on Li metal anode, lower the utilization of active material and lead to the loss of specific capacity and rapid capacity fading. All the above challenges limit the further application of Li-S batteries. Recently, various novel battery configurations have been …

Fundamental Limits Of Measuring Single-Molecule Rotational Mobility, Oumeng Zhang, Matthew D. Lew Feb 2019

Fundamental Limits Of Measuring Single-Molecule Rotational Mobility, Oumeng Zhang, Matthew D. Lew

Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations

Various methods exist for measuring molecular orientation, thereby providing insight into biochemical activities at nanoscale. Since fluorescence intensity and not electric field is detected, these methods are limited to measuring even-order moments of molecular orientation. However, any measurement noise, for example photon shot noise, will result in nonzero measurements of any of these even-order moments, thereby causing rotationally-free molecules to appear to be partially constrained. Here, we build a model to quantify measurement errors in rotational mobility. Our theoretical framework enables scientists to choose the optimal single-molecule orientation measurement technique for any desired measurement accuracy and photon budget.

Electromagnon Excitation In Cupric Oxide Measured By Fabry-Pérot Enhanced Terahertz Mueller Matrix Ellipsometry, Sean Knight, Dharmalingam Prabhakaran, Christian Binek, Mathias Schubert

Christian Binek Publications

Here we present the use of Fabry-Pérot enhanced terahertz (THz) Mueller matrix ellipsometry to measure an electromagnon excitation in monoclinic cupric oxide (CuO). As a magnetically induced ferroelectric multiferroic, CuO exhibits coupling between electric and magnetic order. This gives rise to special quasiparticle excitations at THz frequencies called electromagnons. In order to measure the electromagnons in CuO, we exploit single-crystal CuO as a THz Fabry-Pérot cavity to resonantly enhance the excitation’s signature. This enhancement technique enables the complex index of refraction to be extracted. We observe a peak in the absorption coefficient near 0.705 THz and 215 K, which corresponds …

High Performance Liquid Crystal Devices For Augmented Reality And Virtual Reality, Md Javed Rouf Talukder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

See-through augmented reality and virtual reality displays are emerging due to their widespread applications in education, engineering design, medical, retail, transportation, automotive, aerospace, gaming, and entertainment. For augmented reality and virtual reality displays, high-resolution density, high luminance, fast response time and high ambient contrast ratio are critically needed. High-resolution density helps eliminate the screen-door effect, high luminance and fast response time enable low duty ratio operation, which plays a key role for suppressing image blurs. A dimmer placed in front of AR display helps to control the incident background light, which in turn improves the image contrast. In this dissertation, …

Phonon Order And Reststrahlen Bands Of Polar Vibrations In Crystals With Monoclinic Symmetry, Mathias Schubert, Alyssa Mock, Rafal Korlacki, Vanya Darakchieva

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this Rapid Communication, we present the order of the phonon modes and the appearance of the reststrahlen bands for monoclinic symmetry materials with polar lattice vibrations. Phonon modes occur in associated pairs of transverse and longitudinal optical modes, and pairs either belong to inner or outer phonon modes. Inner modes are nested within outer modes. Outer modes cause polarization-dependent reststrahlen bands. Inner modes cause polarization-independent reststrahlen bands. The directional limiting frequencies within the Born-Huang approach are bound to within outer mode frequency regions not occupied by inner mode pairs. Hence, an unusual phonon mode order can occur where both …

Longitudinal Phonon Plasmon Mode Coupling In Β-Ga2O3, Mathias Schubert, Alyssa Mock, Rafal Korlacki, Sean Knight, Zbigniew Galazka, Günther Wagner, Virginia Wheeler, Marko Tadjer, Ken Goto, Vanya Darakchieva

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this letter, we investigate a set of n-type single crystals of monoclinic symmetry β-Ga2O3 with different free electron concentration values by generalized far infrared and infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry. In excellent agreement with our previous model prediction, we find here by experiment that longitudinal-phonon-plasmon coupled modes are polarized either within the monoclinic plane or perpendicular to the monoclinic plane. As predicted, all modes change the amplitude and frequency with the free electron concentration. The most important observation is that all longitudinal-phonon-plasmon coupled modes polarized within the monoclinic plane continuously change their direction as a function of …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A complete set of infrared-active and Raman-active lattice modes is obtained from density functional theory calculations for single-crystalline centrosymmetric orthorhombic neodymium gallate. The results for infrared-active modes are compared with an analysis of the anisotropic long-wavelength properties using generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry. The frequency-dependent dielectric function tensor and dielectric loss function tensor of orthorhombic neodymium gallium oxide are reported in the spectral range of 80–1200 cm−1. A combined eigendielectric displacement vector summation and dielectric displacement loss vector summation approach augmented by considerations of lattice anharmonicity is utilized to describe the experimentally determined tensor elements. All infrared-active transverse and longitudinal …

Articles

The distribution of Tm3+ and Ni2+ ions is unambiguously exhibited in 80GeS2-20Ga2S3 chalcogenide glass ceramics (GCs) containing Ga2S3 nanocrystals (NCs) by using advanced analytical transmission electron microscopy. Distinctively different distribution patterns of Tm3+ and Ni2+ ions are observed in the GCs obtained by controlled crystallization. The distribution of the dopants imposes strong influence on their optical properties which are revealed by absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Detailed discussions are given of the mechanisms of the crystallization-induced PL enhancement and quenching of the Tm3+ mid-infrared and Ni2+ near-infrared emissions, respectively.

Limitations Of Zt As A Figure Of Merit For Nanostructured Thermoelectric Materials, Xufeng Wang, Mark Lundstrom Jan 2019

Limitations Of Zt As A Figure Of Merit For Nanostructured Thermoelectric Materials, Xufeng Wang, Mark Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Thermoelectric properties of nanocomposites are numerically studied as a function of average grain size or nanoparticle density by simulating the measurements as they would be done experimentally. In accordance with previous theoretical and experimental results, we find that the Seebeck coefficient, power factor and figure of merit, zT, can be increased by nanostructuring when energy barriers exist around the grain boundaries or embedded nanoparticles. When we simulate the performance of a thermoelectric cooler with the same material, however, we find that the maximum temperature difference is much less than expected from the given zT. This occurs because the …

Non-Hermitian And Space-Time Mode Management, Nicholas Nye Jan 2019

Non-Hermitian And Space-Time Mode Management, Nicholas Nye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the last few years, optics has witnessed the emergence of two fields namely metasurfaces and parity-time (PT) symmetry. Optical metasurfaces are engineered structures that provide unique responses to electromagnetic waves, absent in natural materials. On the other hand, PT symmetry has emerged from quantum mechanics, when a new class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian quantum systems was shown to have real eigenvalues. In this work, we demonstrate how PT-symmetric diffractive structures are capable of eliminating diffraction orders in specific directions, while maintaining/enhancing the remaining orders. In the second part of this work, we emphasize on supersymmetry (SUSY) and its applications in …

A Novel Cooperative Distributed Secondary Controller For Vsi And Pq Inverters Of Ac Microgrids, F. Doost Mohammadi, H. Keshtkar, A. Dehghan Banadaki, A. Feliachi

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper proposes a novel cooperative secondary control strategy for microgrids which is fully distributed. There is a two-layered coordination, which exists between inverter based DGs of both types, i.e. Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) and Current Source Inverter (CSI), also called PQ inverter. In first layer of the proposed two-layered cooperative control strategy, VSIs will take care of the primary average voltage regulation by implementing the average consensus algorithm (ACA); then in the second layer of control, the PQ inverters will improve the voltage quality of the microgrid while maintaining the average voltage of buses at the same desired level. …
