CuIn[sub 1-x]Al[sub x]Se[sub 2] thin films are investigated for their application as the absorber layer material for high efficiency solar cells. Single-phase CuIn[sub 1-x]Al[sub x]Se[sub 2] films were deposited by four source elemental evaporation with a composition range of 0≤x≤0.6. All these films demonstrate a normalized subband gap transmission >85% with 2 µm film thickness. Band gaps obtained from spectroscopic ellipsometry show an increase with the Al content in the CuIn[sub 1-x]Al[sub x]Se[sub 2] film with a bowing parameter of 0.62. The structural properties investigated using x-ray diffraction measurements show a decrease in lattice spacing as the Al content increases. …

An Investigation On Sr-Doped Spinel Phase-Lisr Xmn _(2-X ) O _4, Hui Zhan, Yun-Hong Zhou

Sr_doped spinel phase_LiSrxMn 2-x O4 was successfully prepared by solid_state method. Structural and electrochemical characterizations were carried out. Although Sr 2+ has a large ion radius_1.12 ,the spinel structure can be well maintained for LiSrxMn 2-x O4 sample as far as the x value doesn't surpass 0.05. Electrochemical study presents supporting evidence that doping the stoichiometric LiSrxMn 2-x O4 phase with Sr is an effective way to improve the cycleability of LiSrxMn 2-x O4 spinel material. A remarkable enhancement of the cycleability with retention of the initial capacity >90 % after 95 cycles was observed for the Sr_doped spinel.

Sulfate_reducing bacteria(SRB)grows and propagates, PH of the solution is dropped from 7.5 to 5.8,and forms the biofilms on carbon steel in culture medium.The micro_environment on the surface of carbon steel is changed under the biofilms,the factors accelerate the formation of the pitting corrosion. When the biofilm on carbon steel is cleaned out,the surface of carbon steel have the non_uniform pitting corrosion. A novel nanomaterial,zinc oxide (ZnO) and polyaniline (PANI) coaxial nanowires and their array in the template,was synthesized using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane as template.The morphology of these coaxial nanowires was observed with transmission electron microscope (TEM).The experiments on photoluminescence (PL) of coaxial nanowires and their array in AAO membrane show that the visible emission band of ZnO shifts from 530 nm to 400 nm and the luminescence is enhanced for the coaxial nanowires array in AAO membrane,and the visible emission band shifts to a lower wavelergth(385 nm) for coatial nanowires in NaOH solution. The proline film modified electrode and its electrochemical behavior was studied by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry . After incorporation of Ni(Ⅱ), the cyclic voltammograms of the proline Ni(Ⅱ) film electrode exhibited a typical redox peak, which appeared at potential of 0.52 V anodic and 0.44 V cathodic in NaOH. The formal potentials E ' were linearly dependent on the pH, and the peak currents ip were linearly dependent on the square root of the scan rates,thus charge transfer in the film was controlled by diffusion. Mixed metal oxide coated titanium anodes prepared by thermal decomposition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical measurement, while the consumption rate of an anode was also measured in seawater. In order to examine the practical performances of mixed metal oxide_coated anodes, a simulating test on floating dock in seawater has also been carried out. The SEM results indicate that oxide layers exhibited a cracked_mud morphology which endows the anode with good electrocatalytic activity. The electrochemical measurements showed that mixed metal oxide_coated anodes exhibit excellent electrochemical activity and electrochemical stability in seawater. An attempt was made to modify membranes for direct methanol fuel cells by blending Nafion or polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) from their solutions. The proton conductivity and methanol barrier property as a function of the membrane compositions are discussed. Compared with the Nafion 117 membrane, the PVDF_Nafion blend membranes with 25 wt% of Nafion showed a decrease in the conductivity by about 2 orders of magnitude, and the methanol barrier properties increased about 3 orders of magnitude. Electrochromic rhodium oxide films were prepared on ITO substrate by sol_gel method. The films exhibited reversible two_color (bright yellow at reduction and dark green at oxidation) electrochromic behavior in alkaline solution with good cycle stability. In_situ XRD, TGA_DTA, IR, XPS methods were used for studying the structure and chemical process of the films. The diffusion coefficient during the electrochromic process was measured by electrochemical impedance spectra method. It was found that the rhodium oxide films may be suitable for the use in electrochromic devices.

Glyoxylic acid was produced by electroreduction of oxalic acid in a well designed cooled cathode reactor. The cathodic and anodic electrolytes were super_saturated oxalic acid and hydrochloric acid aqueous solutions separated by a super_acid ion_exchange membrane. The current efficiency and time_space yield of glyoxylic acid were studied under different temperatures of cathode and electrolyte,current densities,materials of cathode. With the cooled cathode reactor, the energy consumption was reduced and higher oxalic acid concentration was available in solution, so that current efficiency was improved. The statistical properties of Composite Triple Beat (CTB) and Composite Second Order (CSO) distortion terms associated with the analog channels carried on Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) are presented. Both simulation and measurement results show that such distortion components falling on individual channels have amplitude Probability Density Function that is nearly Rayleigh distributed (having a Standard Deviation of 5.7 dB). It is shown that both CTB and CSO components have peak envelope power fluctuations that exceed their average (measured) power levels by more than 15 dB. Experiments in Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy have been conducted at Old Dominion University since 1996. The method provides a highly sensitive, nonintrusive method of probing gases. Research has concentrated on effectively modeling the higher harmonic shapes that are measured experimentally. Accurately modeling these signals will result in the ability to reliably extract the information contained in transition line shapes.

This thesis presents a complete embedded programming model and software codes for a command-line user interface for CONCOA's gas regulator control system. Control Corporation of America (CONCOA) manufactures high-pressure gas regulators, which mechanically control the pressure at their outlets. Since the control system is based on mechanical regulators, adding or stopping gas flow from the system can cause manifold fluctuation that could further cause the pressure to rise or fall with time. Many traffic simulation tools exist for developing traffic simulations; these tools can be divided broadly into two categories — macro simulation tools and micro simulation tools. These two categories of simulation tools are directed at modeling the extremes of traffic systems: very large systems and very small systems. There is a class of intermediate-sized transportation networks for which neither category of simulation tools might perform adequately. This dissertation focuses on different aspects of face image analysis for accurate face recognition under low resolution and poor lighting conditions. A novel resolution enhancement technique is proposed for enhancing a low resolution face image into a high resolution image for better visualization and improved feature extraction, especially in a video surveillance environment. This method performs kernel regression and component feature learning in local neighborhood of the face images. The most recent research involved registering images in the presence of translations and rotations using one iteration of the redundant discrete wavelet transform. We extend this work by creating a new multiscale transform to register two images with translation or rotation differences, independent of scale differences between the images. Our two-dimensional multiscale transform uses an innovative combination of lowpass filtering and the continuous wavelet transform to mimic the two-dimensional redundant discrete wavelet transform. This thesis significantly advances research towards the implementation of optimal Non-linear Ambiguity Suppression (NLS) waveforms by analyzing the Brown theorem. The Brown theorem is reintroduced with the use of simplified linear algebraic notation. A methodology for Brown symbol design and digitization is provided, and the concept of dispersive gain is introduced. Numerical methods are utilized to design, synthesize, and analyze Brown symbol performance. The theoretical performance in compression and dispersion of Brown symbols is demonstrated and is shown to exhibit significant improvement compared to discrete codes. The La 3+ _doped TiO 2 nanoparticles were prepared with hydrothermal method.The photoelectrochemical properties of La 3+ _doped TiO 2 nanoporous_film electrode sensitized by Ru(bpy) 2(NCS) 2 were studied.The conversion efficiency of light to electricity and the energy conversion efficiencies were ineased with the depth of La 3+ _doped TiO 2 nanoporous_film electrode.

As for the process of the electro oxidation of glyoxal to glyoxalic acid, the electrolytic result of either fixed bed electrolytic cell or varying current electrolysis was better than that of either flat plate electrolytic cell or constant current electrolysis. The average current density of varying current electro synthesis of glyoxalic acid in pairs was 1535 A/m 2 and the current efficiency were 85.3% and 86.7% and the selectivity were 93.9% and 94.0% for the anodic oxidation and cathodal reduction respectively. The nickel electropolyurushiol coordination polymer(EPU Ni 2+ ) was obtained by the reaction between nickel chloride isopropyl alcohol solution with electropolyurushiol (EPU).The electrochemical polymerization of urushiol and the preparation of nickel electropolyurushiol coordination polymer were investigated.The coordination polymer was characterized by XPS,FT_IR,DMTA and AES methods,and its composition and structure were determined.The content of Ni 2+ reached up to 7.5%. It was shown that there was certain coordination between Ni 2+ and electropolyurushiol in the coordination polymer,thus cross_links were formed.Therefore the glass transition temperature of the coordination polymer increased and heat resistance was enhanced considerably.

Glyoxylic acid was produced by electroreduction of oxalic acid in a packed bed reator.The cathodic and anodic electrolytes were super_saturated oxalic and hydrochloric acid aqueous solutions separated by a super_acid ion_exchange membrane.The current efficiency and yield of glyoxylic acid were studied under different structured packed bed reactors and different electrode materials,temperatures and current densities.The results indicated that the current efficiency of synthsis of glyoxylic acid was over 66.2% and the concentration of glyoxylic acid could reach 2.02% after 45min electrolysis with cathode of lead particles and anode of graphite board under conditions of temperature 32 ℃,superficial flow rate of 0.505 …

The performance of a direct ethanol fuel cell based on Nafion115 was reported.PtRu/C and Pt/C were used as ethanol anode and oxygen cathode catalysts in a single cell of size 9 cm 2 .The effects of temperature,oxygen pressure,the flow rate of ethanol, and oxygen, and ethanol concentration were tentatively studied.The experimental results showed that the cell open circuit voltage 0.608 V,the cell voltage 0.329 V at 50 mA/cm 2 ,and the peak power density 19.25 mW/cm 2 were reached under the conditions of T cell =85 ℃, P O2 =0.5 MPa, C ethanol =1.0 mol/L and with the flow rate …

XML is becoming the data exchange standard on the Internet. Previously proposed XML query languages, such as XQuery, Quilt, YALT, Lorel, and XML-QL, lack schema definition of the query result; therefore, they are limited for defining views, integrating data, updating, and further querying, all of which are often needed in e-Business applications. We propose a novel XML query language called CXQuery, which defines the schema of the query results explicitly and can easily define views, and integrate, update, and query XML data. In addition, CXQuery can express spatial and spatio-temporal queries using a constraint-based querying approach.

Defects in the band gap of CuIn1-xGaxSe2 have been characterized using transient photocapacitance spectroscopy. The measured spectra clearly show response from a band of defects centered around 0.8 eV from the valence band edge as well as an exponential distribution of band tail states. Despite Ga contents ranging from Ga/(In+Ga)=0.0 to 0.8, the defect bandwidth and its position relative to the valence band remain constant. This defect band may act as an important recombination center, contributing to the decrease in device efficiency with increasing Ga content.

Polycrystalline Si films, 0.5-mm thick, were obtained as a result of metal-induced growth by sputtering from a Si target on 25 nm thick Ni prelayers at 525 °C. Silicon grew heteroepitaxially on the NiSi2 layer formed due to the reaction between the sputtered Si atoms and Ni. Schottky diodes were fabricated on the Si films by deposition of a Schottky metal on the front surface of the film while Ni disilicide provided an intimate ohmic contact at the back. The range of incidence angle, 0 < φ < φe, over which p-polarized light is reflected at interfaces between transparent and absorbing media with reflectance below that at normal incidence is determined. Contours of constant φe in the complex plane of the relative dielectric constant ε are presented. A method for determining the real and imaginary parts of the complex refractive index, ε1/2 = n + jk, which is based on measuring φe and the pseudo-Brewster angle φpB, is viable in the domain of fractional optical constants, n, k < 1.
