Ionospheric F-Layer Dipole Flute Instability Effects On Electromagnetic Scattering In A Magnetohydrodynamic Plasma, Andrew J. Knisely Nov 2021

Ionospheric F-Layer Dipole Flute Instability Effects On Electromagnetic Scattering In A Magnetohydrodynamic Plasma, Andrew J. Knisely

Theses and Dissertations

The ionosphere has significant impact on radio frequency (RF) applications such as satellites, over-the-horizon radar, and commercial communication systems. The dynamic processes effecting the behavior of the ionic content leads to a variety of instabilities that adversely affect the quality of RF signals. In the F-layer ionosphere, flute instability persists, appearing as two radial regions of high and low density perturbations elongated along the earth's geomagnetic field lines. The sizes of flute structures are comparable to the wavelengths in the high frequency spectrum. The objective is to characterize the high frequency scattering of an incident field by developing a 3D …

Resampling And Super-Resolution Of Hexagonally Sampled Images Using Deep Learning, Dylan Flaute, Russell C. Hardie, Hamed Elwarfalli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Super-resolution (SR) aims to increase the resolution of imagery. Applications include security, medical imaging, and object recognition. We propose a deep learning-based SR system that takes a hexagonally sampled low-resolution image as an input and generates a rectangularly sampled SR image as an output. For training and testing, we use a realistic observation model that includes optical degradation from diffraction and sensor degradation from detector integration. Our SR approach first uses non-uniform interpolation to partially upsample the observed hexagonal imagery and convert it to a rectangular grid. We then leverage a state-of-the-art convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture designed for SR …

Synthesis Of Nickel Phosphide/Nitrogen Phosphorus Co-Doped Carbon And Its Application In Lithium Ion Batteries, Jian Hu, Yan-Shuang Meng, Qian-Ru Hu

Journal of Electrochemistry

In recent years, the nickel-based phosphide has drawn great attention because of its low intercalation/deintercalation platform and lower polarization compared to sulfides and oxides as anodes for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries. The Ni2P anode can deliver high theoretical specific capacity of 542 mAh·g-1, but it subject to a conversion reaction mechanism, which make them unsuitable for commercial applications. The agglomeration of Ni2P nanoparticles during material fabrication and the structural deterioration of electrode associated with large volume change during charge-discharge process lead to poor cycle stability and low utilization of active materials. Meanwhile, the low …

Tailoring Plasmon Excitations In Alpha − T 3 Armchair Nanoribbons, Andrii Iurov, Liubov Zhemchuzhna, Godfrey Gumbs, Danhong Huang, Paula Fekete, Farhana Anwar, Dipendra Dahal, Nicholas Weekes

Publications and Research

We have calculated and investigated the electronic states, dynamical polarization function and the plasmon excitations for α − T 3 nanoribbons with armchair-edge termination. The obtained plasmon dispersions are found to depend significantly on the number of atomic rows across the ribbon and the energy gap which is also determined by the nanoribbon geometry. The bandgap appears to have the strongest effect on both the plasmon dispersions and their Landau damping. We have determined the conditions when relative hopping parameter α of an α − T 3 lattice has a strong effect on the plasmons which makes our material distinguished …

Approaches For Eye-Tracking While Reading, Xiaohao Sun Oct 2021

Approaches For Eye-Tracking While Reading, Xiaohao Sun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we developed an algorithm to detect the correct line being read by participants. The comparisons of the reading line classification algorithms are demonstrated using eye-tracking data collected from a realistic reading experiment in front of a low-cost desktop-mounted eye-tracker. With the development of eye-tracking techniques, research begins to aim at trying to understand information from the eyes. However, state of the art in eye-tracking applications is affected by a large amount of measurement noise. Even the expensive eye-trackers still suffer significant noise. In addition, the inherent characteristics of gaze movement increase the difficulty of obtaining valuable information …

Political Processes Of Displacement In Infrastructure Development: The Case Of Aldeia Da Luz And The Alqueva Dam, Cordelia Walz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In 2002, the residents of Aldeia da Luz left their village for the final time, displaced to make room for the Alqueva Dam, a massive regional hydropower and irrigation project almost half a century in the making. The Alqueva Multipurpose Project was marketed by the Portuguese government as a way to develop the impoverished region of the Alentejo and bring innovation to the agricultural sector. The village of Luz was the only physical obstacle to this goal and, therefore, its residents were dispossessed, sacrificed for the development of the greater Alentejo region. However, unlike many other large-scale infrastructure projects that …

Study On Inhibition Of Lithium Dendrite Growth By Mg(No3)2 Additive In Carbonate Electrolyte, Biao Zhang, Yi Shuai, Yu Wang, Na-Chuan Yang, Kang-Hua Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

In the lithium-sulfurized polyacrylonitrile battery system, the formation and growth of lithium dendrites in the negative electrode seriously deteriorate the charge and discharge performance of the battery. If the growth of lithium dendrites pierces the separator and causes thermal runaway, it will also bring serious damage to the battery, causing potential safety risks. In the carbonate electrolyte that is more conducive to stabilizing the positive electrode sulfurized polyacrylonitrile material, the growth of lithium dendrites is particularly serious. In this paper, magnesium nitrate was added to the carbonate electrolyte to investigate the combined effect of nitrate and magnesium ions on the …

One-Pot Synthesis Of Fe2O3@Fe-N-C Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalyst And Its Performance For Zinc-Air Battery, Hua Lin, Yi-Jin Wu, Jun-Tao Li, Yao Zhou

Journal of Electrochemistry

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays a profound role in determining cathode performance in metal-air batteries and fuel cells. Owing to its inherently sluggish kinetics, high-performance ORR catalysts which favors the scissoring of O-O bond and formation of O-H bond are a requisite. In this regard, Pt has been explored as the most efficient ORR electrocatalysts. Nevertheless, due to its expensiveness, the usage of Pt catalysts represents one of the major sources of cost in those energy conversion devices. Thus, the development of alternative ORR electrocatalysts with minimized Pt utilization has been widely pursued over the past few decades. Metal-nitrogen-carbon catalysts …

Study On Mxene-Carbon Black/Sulfur Composite In Integrated Electrode Of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Ye-Peng Fan, Ye-Qiang Luo, Pei-Kang Shen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered as a promising energy storage device due to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density of 2500 Wh·kg-1 and low cost. However, the practical application of Li-S batteries is seriously limited by their low actual energy density, the shuttle effect of polysulfides (LiPSs), and the insulating nature of sulfur and lithium sulfides. Carbon materials have been developed in the design of sulfur hosts due to their adjustable pore structure and high electrical conductivity, but their non-polar surfaces have weak interactions with LiPSs. Herein, MXene-carbon black/sulfur (Ti3C2Tx-CB/S) composites were prepared and …
