A Synthesis Of Lead Isotopes In Two Millennia Of European Air, Charles Dunlap, Eiliv Steinnes, A. Russell Flegal Dec 1998

A Synthesis Of Lead Isotopes In Two Millennia Of European Air, Charles Dunlap, Eiliv Steinnes, A. Russell Flegal

Charles Dunlap

Four airborne particulate records from ombrotrophic peat bogs in southern Norway, extending back 300 years, have been measured for chronology, lead concentration, and lead isotope composition. Since southern Norway receives an airborne lead signal that accumulates emissions from the European continent, the trend in the four bog records can be used to correlate previously reported measurements from France, Switzerland, England, and Greenland that cover different ranges of time. When these are compiled, the integrated European record that emerges spans the last 2300 years of human influence on lead in the air over Europe and suggests human control of lead in …

The paper presents the results of many years of complex research issues related to the emission of fluorine compounds of iron and steel processes. They allowed to examine these processes used in raw materials in terms of the fluorine content and their impact on the amount of emissions of fluorine compounds to the air. Were determined by measuring the levels of concentration in flue gases and stack emissions of fluorine in the form of gaseous and solid compounds, including water-soluble components (considered to be toxic).

English title: Analysis of emission sources of fluorine compounds from the processes of ferrous metallurgy.

Conditions occurring in cement rotary kilns assure high destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) of the most stable substances, efficacious dry sorption of acid gases in the alkaline raw meal and heavy metals bounding in the clinker. Adequate operation of hazardous waste incineration in the process connected with cement clinker production does not cause increasing air pollutant emissions. Magnitude of the emissions often does not depend of this if there are using wastes in the cement kiln at all. The work presents a review of DRE levels and stack emissions for selected flue-gas constituents during hazardous waste co-combustion in cement kilns …

Vegetation Analysis: A Graphical Analysis Of Plant Succession In Desert Communities Affected By Fire, Jeff Lantow

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Mojave Desert is affected by fire every year. With each fire comes the removal of old growth and, in its place, new growth – consisting primarily of those species which thrive in disturbed areas. The focus of my research is to look at plant communities that have been disturbed by fire, and examine the successional pathway of these disturbed environments. The seven environments I analyzed were burned within the last twenty years and are found in the Coleogyne ramosissima ecotone throughout the Spring Mountain range near Las Vegas, Nevada. The data was collected with randomly chosen circle plots in …

A widely employed method of reducing cement production costs is the substitution of traditional fuels with alternative and waste-derived fuels to heat the cement kiln. Cement industry offers the most acceptable method of hazardous waste incineration and co-combustion with significantly lower cost in comparison to incinerators. The high temperatures and long residence times inherent in the operation of cement kilns ensure the almost complete destruction of the organic compounds introduced together with waste fuels. This part of the article presents general characteristic of sort of waste incinerated in cement kilns, way of their charging, advantages and limitations of waste co-combustion …

Climate Change And Nebraska Sep 1998

Climate Change And Nebraska

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The earth's climate is predicted to change because human activities are altering the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases - primarily carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. The heat-trapping property of these greenhouse gases is undisputed. Although there is uncertainty about exactly how and when the earth's climate will respond to enhanced concentrations of greenhouse gases, observations indicate that detectable changes are under way. There most likely will be increases in temperature and changes in precipitation, soil moisture, and sea level, which could have adverse effects on many ecological systems, as well as on …

Gray Wolf (Canis Lupus) Jul 1998

Gray Wolf (Canis Lupus)

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

Historically, most Native Americans revered gray wolves, trying to emulate their cunning and hunting abilities. However, wolves became nearly extinct in the lower 48 states in the early part of the 20th century because settlers believed wolves caused widespread livestock losses. Constantly persecuted and targeted by large scale predator eradication programs sponsored by the federal government, wolves have been pursued with more passion and determination than any other animal in U.S. history. By the time wolves were finally protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, they had been exterminated from the lower 48 states, except for a few hundred …

The Price Of Clean Air: A Consideration Of Market Based Emissions Trading, Mark W. Miller May 1998

The Price Of Clean Air: A Consideration Of Market Based Emissions Trading, Mark W. Miller

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Traditional regulatory approaches for environmental protection do not consider

the costs and benefits of the standards they impose. Further, imposing strict performance

standards on firms with heterogeneous control costs leads to an inefficient allocation of resources devoted to pollution control. This paper explores the use of emission allowance trading as a way to improve economic efficiency within the context of environmental protection. PM10 air pollution from sources within the Las Vegas Valley is used as the case study.

This paper found that an emission trading

program in this particular case study would not live up to the theoretical expectations. Although, …

Measuring The Applicability Of The Seville Strategy To The Mammoth Cave Area Biosphere Reserve, Debra Kreitzer May 1998

Measuring The Applicability Of The Seville Strategy To The Mammoth Cave Area Biosphere Reserve, Debra Kreitzer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The dominant paradigms of the past decade involve the preservation of biodiversity through the use of landscape corridors and buffer zones, as well as the integration of economic growth through sustainable use. The International Biosphere Reserve (IBR) program, as defined in the Seville Strategy, encourages locations already involved in conservation to continue to protect biodiversity and foster harmonious relationships between humans and their environment through sustainable development. An excellent example of an IBR is the Mammoth Cave Area Biosphere Reserve (MCABR) in south-central Kentucky. In order to measure the significance of the implementation of the Seville Strategy in the MCABR, …

Management Of Conflicts Between Urban Coyotes And Humans In Southern California, Rex O. Baker, Robert M. Timm

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

An apparent increase in coyote-human conflicts, notably attacks on humans, demonstrates that such incidents are not rare in California. The authors discuss coyote attacks on 53 humans, resulting in 21 instances of human injury, over the last decade. These illustrate repeated, predictable pre-attack coyote behavior patterns. Specific changes in human environments and in human behavior that have contributed to coyote attacks are discussed. Case histories of attacks reveal contributing factors and suggest appropriate corrective and preventive actions. Padded leghold traps have been the most effective and efficient tool in removing problem coyotes and changing the behavior of coyotes to fear …

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Wildlife damage problems are experienced by all segments of society. Row crops, forages, rangeland, fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, and turf are all susceptible to wildlife damage at various stages of development. Agricultural producers lose billions of dollars each year due to crop damage caused by deer, voles, blackbirds, and other wildlife species (Conover et al. 1995). In addition, over 75,000 people are injured annually or become ill in North America due to wildlife-related incidents. For most of these problems, IPM principles can be applied to reduce damage to tolerable levels. Information, materials, and services on wildlife damage management are available through …

The article presents measurement results of air pollutant emissions from incineration of selected hazardous wastes in a full-scale rotary kiln equipped with afterburner and a wet installation for flue gas cleaning. This type of kiln is suitable for thermal disposal of many sorts of wastes, both solid and liquid. Four groups of waste were being incinerated during the tests: coke tars, medical (hospital) and pharmaceutical wastes added to greased cleaning materials, a sawdust and used gloves, varnish and lubrication wastes, as well as waste rubber and resins. The study was performed in order to answer the question: is the process …

Development Of Seed Treatments To Control Blackbirds, Michael L. Avery, David Decker, John S. Humphrey Jan 1998

Development Of Seed Treatments To Control Blackbirds, Michael L. Avery, David Decker, John S. Humphrey

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Bird repellents to protect seeds are a potentially important aspect of integrated vertebrate pest management strategies. Yet, there currently are no repellents registered for seed treatment uses. This is due not to lack of effective candidate compounds, but to monetary and regulatory constraints that inhibit commercialization of promising compounds. Two examples of this dilemma are methiocarb and anthraquinone, each of which has considerable potential for bird repellent uses and each of which faces considerable registration hurdles as prospective seed treatment compounds. A concerted, coordinated effort among private industry, producer groups, and state and federal agencies may be the best strategy …

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Roof rats (Rattus rattus) damage an estimated 5 to 10% of the developing nut crop in Hawaiian macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia) orchards. Relevant aspects of roof rat biology in macadamia orchards have and continue to be studied with the ultimate goal of developing an ecologically sound and cost-effective integrated pest management plan. The field component of a two-year study of roof rat populations in macadamia orchards has recently been completed. The goal of this study is to clarify the relationship between roof rat seasonal abundance, macadamia flowering, and nut production on five orchards in three regions on …

Review Of Bird Repellents, Larry Clark Jan 1998

Review Of Bird Repellents, Larry Clark

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Despite a general perception that there is an abundance of nonlethal control technologies, the fact remains that there are fewer registered products and active ingredients for repellents in the U.S. than there were 10 and 20 years ago. This review discusses the technical issues relating to the discovery, formulation, and delivery of chemical repellents, and suggests future avenues of research that would improve our ability to develop effective chemical repellents.

Fertility Control In Coyotes: Is It A Potential Management Tool?, Thomas J. De Liberto, Eric M. Gese, Frederick F. Knowlton, J. Russell Mason, Michael R. Conover, Lowell Miller, Robert H. Schmidt, Michael K. Holland

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Fertility control in wildlife is emerging as a potential management tool. Published research on feral horses, deer, rodents, and rabbits suggest an effective agent producing reversible infertility in these species could be developed. Furthermore, anecdotal reports suggest that infertility can be induced in a greater array of species. In this paper, the authors review methods of fertility control being studied for application in wildlife and focus on their studies designed to evaluate the effectiveness of fertility control agents in coyotes (Canis latrans). Immunocontraception using porcine zona pellucida (PZP) is currently the most promising method of fertility control in …
