Nowadays, people spend most of their time indoors. Despite constantly cleaning these spaces, dust apparition cannot be avoided. Since dust can contain chemical elements that negatively impact people's health, we propose the analysis of the metals from the indoor dust component collected in different locations in Dubai, UAE. Multivariate statistics (correlation matrix, clustering) and quality indicators (QI)-Igeo, PI, EF, PLI, Nemerow-were used to assess the contamination level with different metals in the dust. We proposed two new QIs (CPI and AQI) and compared the results with those provided by the most used indices-PLI and Nemerow. It is shown that high …

Demand Analysis Of Energy Mix In District Kotli Azad Jammu And Kashmir, Pakistan, Syed Kafait Hussain Naqvi
CBER Conference
This study is an effort to empirically analyze the household’s demand for energy mix (electricity, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), kerosene, and firewood) in the District Kotli, AJK. The study estimates the demand elasticities (price and expenditure) by employing the Linear Approximate Almost Ideal Demand System (LA-AIDS) to 384 households sampled across District Kotli, AJK in 2017. The empirical estimations are carried out by using the Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR), keeping intact the adding-up, homogeneity and symmetry restrictions.

Ecosystem Service Valuation Of Blue Carbon Habitats: A Review For Saltmarshes And Seagrasses, Geraldine Doolan, Stephen Hynes
Ecosystem Service Valuation Of Blue Carbon Habitats: A Review For Saltmarshes And Seagrasses, Geraldine Doolan, Stephen Hynes
Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics
Oceans and coastal marine ecosystems, particularly vegetated coastal habitats such as mangroves, seagrass, and saltmarsh, play a significant role in the global carbon cycle as long-term carbon sinks. Ensuring that these habitats continue to function as sinks and do not become sources of emissions through habitat degradation is vital for climate and environmental policy goals. These blue carbon ecosystems also provide a number of other important ecosystem services to societies. Understanding the economic value of blue carbon ecosystems is necessary to make informed policy decisions that weigh the costs and benefits of ecosystem management plans. This paper reviews the current …

The Effects Of The Big-Headed Turtle (Platysternon Megacephalum) On Community And Ecosystem In Hong Kong Hill Streams, Wing Lam Fok
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Freshwater turtles and tortoises are ecologically important organisms; however, they are underappreciated, and conservation attention often focuses on the more charismatic animals such as birds and mammals. Although turtles are the most traded group of animals and many species are at the brink of extinction, little research has been done to understand their ecology in Asia because of the rarity of wild populations. Hong Kong is a biodiversity hotspot for freshwater turtle species. The Big-headed Turtle (Platysternon megacephalum) is a critically endangered species that still maintains small populations in Hong Kong, providing a rare opportunity to study the …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
With climate change accelerated at a worrisome rate, global warming also will have implications for surgery and surgical practice. The goal of this current study was to systematically survey the literature and better understand how climate change has affected surgical disease burden, surgical care delivery, and surgical outcomes. We performed a comprehensive scoping review, screening 3334 unique citations from three databases – 1766 from Embase, 1329 from Pubmed and 239 from Scopus – to identify studies that had associated climate change with surgery. After systematic searching, quality appraisal, and data extraction, we synthesized findings from qualitative and quantitative studies. Twenty-six …

Gvcs And Environmental Sustainability In Mena: Do Digitalization And Institutions Make A Difference?, Suzanna Elmassah, Eslam A. Hassanein
All Works
The advent of digitalization has brought about profound changes in the global value chain, raising significant concerns about environmental sustainability. However, the environmental consequences resulting from the interplay between global value chain participation and digitalization have not been adequately explored, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA). To address this gap, our research delves into the impact of global value chain participation on environmental sustainability in 15 MENA countries from 1996 to 2018. We also investigate the moderating effects of two critical policy variables: digitization and institutional quality, employing the SYS-GMM Panel method and Random Effects method. …

Uavs And Deep Neural Networks: An Alternative Approach To Monitoring Waterfowl At The Site Level, Zachary J. Loken
Uavs And Deep Neural Networks: An Alternative Approach To Monitoring Waterfowl At The Site Level, Zachary J. Loken
LSU Master's Theses
Understanding how waterfowl respond to habitat restoration and management activities is crucial for evaluating and refining conservation delivery programs. However, site-specific waterfowl monitoring is challenging, especially in heavily forested systems such as the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV)—a primary wintering region for ducks in North America. I hypothesized that using uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) coupled with deep learning-based methods for object detection would provide an efficient and effective means for surveying non-breeding waterfowl on difficult-to-access restored wetland sites. Accordingly, during the winters of 2021 and 2022, I surveyed wetland restoration easements in the MAV using a UAV equipped with a dual …

The movement ecology of raccoons varies widely across habitats with important implications for the management of zoonotic diseases such as rabies. However, the spatial ecology of raccoons remains poorly understood in many regions of the United States, particularly in the southeast. To better understand the spatial ecology of raccoons in the southeastern US, we investigated the role of sex, season, and habitat on monthly raccoon home range and core area sizes in three common rural habitats (bottomland hardwood, upland pine, and riparian forest) in South Carolina, USA. From 2018–2022, we obtained 264 monthly home ranges from 46 raccoons. Mean monthly …

Seasonal Differences In Diet Specialization, Frugivory, And Seed Dispersal In A Subtropical Population Of Gopher Tortoise, Adrian Figueroa
Seasonal Differences In Diet Specialization, Frugivory, And Seed Dispersal In A Subtropical Population Of Gopher Tortoise, Adrian Figueroa
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is the culmination of a 1.5-year research project into the unique ecology of gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) at the southeasternmost extent of the species’ range. This study population occupies the globally imperiled pine rockland ecosystem of Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA, of which >98% no longer exists outside Everglades National Park. My research unveiled a seasonal shift in the diet of the gopher tortoise population where individuals became more specialized in the wet season (June to November) than in the dry season (December to May). This temporal difference in diet specialization coincided with a shift toward frugivory. …
