Coal Geology & Exploration
The dynamic process and influence range of instability-induced landslide movement have important effects on the risk area division and prevention of landslide hazards. To accurately and systematically analyze the changes in the dynamic characteristics of landsides during their instability-induced movement, this study thoroughly investigated and analyzed the instability-induced movement process of the Yanguan landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, Zigui County, Hubei Province. Through laboratory ring shear tests, this study determined the changing pattern of residual strength and the motion parameters of sliding zone soil under different shear rates. Accordingly, using the material point method (MPM), which is suitable …
Iron Occurrence In Coal Measures And Its Release Mechanism During Water-Rock Interactions: Taking A Mine In The Eastern Grassland As An Example, Wang Tiantian
Coal Geology & Exploration
The mine water with iron out of limit corrodes the water distribution pipeline and the industrial equipment, thereby damaging the liver of human body, and further threatening the human health. The enrichment or dilution of iron in mine water is determined by the iron content and its occurrence in coal measures, as well as its release mechanism during water-coal and water-rock interactions. Herein, 18 groups of coal and rock samples were collected from a mine in the eastern grassland, and had the iron content, occurrence and carrier in the coal measure analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), …

Influence Of High In-Situ Stress Areas In The Coal Seam Roofs On Microseism-Based Tomographic Inversion, Liu Kaihang, Feng Lei, Yun Meihou, Cao Yunxing, Tian Lin
Coal Geology & Exploration
High in-situ stress areas in the coal seam roofs are prone to induce mine dynamic hazard such as rock bursts. To meet the demand for safe coal mining, this study achieved real-time monitoring and swift early warning of high in situ stress areas. Specifically, based on data transmitted from microseismic stations in real time, this study conducted the inversion of the wave velocities in coal seams and rocks using a fast three-dimensional (3D) tomographic inversion algorithm. The accuracy of tomographic inversion results directly determines the judgment on the locations of high in situ stress areas. Therefore, by building a 3D …

Collaborative Action In Informal Social Networks Of Wildfire Managers In Northwestern Wyoming, Hannah Lynn Spencer
Collaborative Action In Informal Social Networks Of Wildfire Managers In Northwestern Wyoming, Hannah Lynn Spencer
Dissertations and Theses
Wildfire is a cross-boundary, collective action issue. Previous research has demonstrated the importance of collaborative relationships in wildfire for purposes such as increasing capacity, trading information, and facilitating landscape-scale mitigation projects. However, a stakeholder's location in social networks, as well as personal factors, may impact their collaboration. Furthermore, stakeholders must prioritize their own organizational goals and responsibilities, which may differ from those of their collaborators. I used interview and survey methods to investigate these questions in the context of wildfire management professionals in northwestern Wyoming. For the interviews, I selected 12 individuals with high betweenness centrality who were involved in …

Ucg Pilot Tests In Eu Countries: A Review Of History And Progress, Jin Lili, Yang Lei, Wu Yarong, Wang Xiaofang, Yi Tongsheng, Qin Yong
Coal Geology & Exploration
Underground coal gasification (UCG) is an important way of transforming China’s coal energy structure. European Union (EU) countries explored UCG for over 80 years, and their rich experience can be used as a reference for promoting UCG industrialization in China. The UK prepared for UCG pilot tests for the first time in the world. From 1944 to 2014, based on the experience of the former Soviet Union and the United States, EU countries successively implemented at least 12 UCG pilot test projects in three stages, making important contributions to the progress in UCG technologies. They invented the blind-hole method and …

A Method For Suppressing Casing Coupling Noise In Vsp Data Based On Morphological Component Analysis Of Characteristic Waves, Pan Long, Mao Haibo, Jiang Li, Hu Keyang, Dang Zhimin, Chen Wenchao
Coal Geology & Exploration
During the acquisition of vertical seismic profile (VSP) data, coupling noise between casing strings frequently emerges due to poor well cementing or the presence of cement annulus between multiple casing layers. This type of noise features high energy, a wide spatial influence range, and slow attenuation. Furthermore, it overlaps effective signals in multiple domains, such as the time and frequency domains. Therefore, casing coupling noise severely affects the signal-to-noise ratio of VSP data. This study first introduces the basic theory of Morphological Component Analysis (MCA). Then, it conducts a comparative analysis of the distribution of effective signals and casing coupling …
Bring On The Heat, Renée Stoute
Bring On The Heat, Renée Stoute
The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development
According to the World Economic Forum, in retaliation to European Union sanctions and embargoes, Russia cut EU gas flows by around 80% between May and October 2022 (WEF, 2022). The EU, in turn, has had to not only reduce energy consumption within the public and private sectors but has also scrambled to find energy alternatives to compensate for its energy shortcomings. However, due to the EU’s rejection of Russian oil and gas, there are now opportunities to embrace more sustainable energy alternatives quicker than previously expected. This could lead to a faster transition towards the use of cleaner and more …

Waterbody Size Predicts Bank- And Boat-Angler Efforts, Derek S. Kane, Kevin L. Pope, Keith D. Koupal, Mark A. Pegg, Christopher J. Chizinski, Mark A. Kaemingk
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Bank- and boat-angler efforts are logistically difficult and costly to estimate, preventing landscape-scale estimates that are required to address current and future challenges (e.g., climate change, invasive species) for inland recreational fisheries. Using a large Nebraska, USA, recreational fishery dataset (N = 67 waterbodies), we demonstrate that waterbody size can be used to predict bank- and boat-angler efforts across a heterogeneous landscape of extra small (< 104 ha) and large (> 647 ha) waterbodies. Bank and boat anglers respond to waterbody size, however these relationships appear to be unique between the two angler types. Boat-angler efforts increased as a function of waterbody size, whereas bank-angler …

Influence Of Cutting Parameters On The Performance Of Plough During Hard Rock Cutting In Coal Mining, Sathish Kumar Palaniappan, Moganapriya Chinnasamy, Samir Kumar Pal, Rajasekar Rathanasamy
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Coal ploughs have proved very successful on many faces in various parts of the world. Recently, there has been a general tendency in longwall working to increase the speed at which the machine progresses along the coal face. An increase in production rate demands enhances either due to depth of penetration or cutting speed. This, in turn, results in increasing power demand and also the force acting on an individual pick. To get maximum efficiency from a cutting machine, a number of parameters need to be investigated. The first and foremost thing of interest is naturally the pick geometry. The …
The Relationship Between Water Temperature And Proximity To Surface Urban Heat Islands Within The Lower Chesapeake Bay Watershed For The Summer Of 2019, Sarah Kerner
Student Research Submissions
Surface urban heat islands (SUHIs) are land surfaces with high concentrations of impervious surfaces like roofs, roads, sidewalks and other infrastructures that trap, absorb, and re-emit heat throughout the day/night and typically present higher temperatures than their surrounding rural areas. In this study, I evaluate how presence of and distance to SUHIs are associated with water temperature in the lower Chesapeake Bay watershed for the summer of 2019. When heavy precipitation events occur, flooding creates stormwater runoff, which is exposed to the hotter temperatures in urban areas. This introduces thermal pollution to nearby rivers and streams disrupting aquatic ecosystems. The …

From Waste To Energy: The Electrochemical Reduction Of Co2 Using Recycled Nanostructured Catalysts, Ibrahim Badawy
Theses and Dissertations
The reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR) using electrochemistry is a promising solution for the burgeoning global energy crisis. The overall vision of its implementation relies on renewable energy sources to power the reaction creating carbon neutral products and effectively closing the carbon cycle. Research in this field has come a long way since its inception in the mid-1900s. However, there remain significant hurdles and important considerations to overcome in order to reach full commercialization. Most electrocatalysts tested for CO2RR have been designed solely for maximum performance while ignoring the environmental consequences if such a material were …
