Method Of Selecting The Optimal Variant Of Mine Closure With The Possibility Of Capturing Methane From Underground Excavations, Marian Turek, Małgorzata Magdziarczyk
Journal of Sustainable Mining
The article presents a method of selecting the optimal option for the closure of a coal mine, from which it is planned to capture the methane remaining in the goaf and deposit it for many years for its economic use. Using the example of several options for the closure of one of the mines, for which the evaluation criteria have been defined, and the weights of their relevance have been determined, it is described how to create a special algorithm for the selection of the optimal option.

Application Of Haines And Terbrugge Chart For Suitable Slope Angles – A Case Study Of Artisanal And Small-Scale Mining, Carol Mgiba, Steven Rupprecht
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Significant hazards in Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) are rock failure and slope collapse caused by overly steep pit walls, poor mine design and water pressure. There is a lack of expertise and capital in ASM. Providing a simple and cost-effective slope stability analysis and designing systems that can mitigate the risk of slope collapse is essential. This article aims to assess whether stability charts and estimations can be used to establish suitable slope angles to mitigate the overwhelming cases of slope collapse in ASM. The Bieniawski’s Rock Mass Rating system and Heins and Terbrugge stability chart were used to …

Urban areas in Utah have suffered from poor air quality since Euro-American settlement in 1847. Because today’s harmful air pollutants and carbon dioxide—the most significant driver of contemporary climate change—are often emitted together, a carbon tax could improve air quality while also mitigating climate change. Here, we explore how Sweden has successfully implemented a carbon tax and consider the viability of a similar approach for Utah. While a carbon tax would pressure Utah’s transportation and energy sectors to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, revenue from the tax could finance renewable energy infrastructure to support companies transitioning away from fossil fuels …

Climate, Water, and the Environment Research
Heat is the primary cause of weather-related mortality in the United States. The 2021 Northwest Heat Dome highlighted this susceptibility. In Washington State, 159 excess deaths were attributed to the 7-day period of unprecedented extreme heat between June 26th and July 2nd. This impact was felt even in some of the more acclimatized parts of the state, like Spokane County, where 19 heat-related deaths were reported. As climate change increases the frequency, duration, and intensity of extreme heat events, creating and sustaining heat-resilient communities has become an urgent public health priority. On 6 June 2023, Gonzaga University, in partnership with …

Low-Emission Beef Production In The Southern Rangelands Of Western Australia: An Analysis Of Herd Structure And Stocking Rate Experiencing Droughts, Christophe D'Abbadie
Animal Production and Livestock Research Articles
Reconciling profitable cattle production with rangeland health and reduced emissions is a key challenge in the southern rangelands of Western Australia (WA). Stocking rate and herd structure selection are crucial decisions to achieve this balance. This study assessed the emission profiles of three contrasting herd structures (weaner production, live export, and slaughter production), and three stocking rates within a herd–carbon accounting modelling framework. The analysis considers the impact of varying drought frequencies on these cattle production systems. Herd models were developed for the semiarid southern WA rangelands. Stocking rates were set at 100%, 80% and 66% of the government recommended …
A Forest Management Evaluation System For Small Private Forest Landowners, Pete Bettinger, Taeyoon Lee, Krista Merry, Daniel Drummond
A Forest Management Evaluation System For Small Private Forest Landowners, Pete Bettinger, Taeyoon Lee, Krista Merry, Daniel Drummond
The Journal of Extension
When small private forest landowners have a need to address jointly economic and sustainability objectives, efficiency in both respects becomes important given limitations on the land, budget, time, and other resources that are available. The suite of forest management options available to a landowner may be vast and complex, therefore a tool to assist and inform their potential management activities can be of value. The eYield model was developed as an application (app) to assess forest management options on many different computing devices, from cellphones to desktop computers. Within eYield, a person can define a management situation, specify prices and …

Tracing Atlantic Sea Scallops Using Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) Technology, Will Shoup, David Rudders, Jonathon Peros
The Journal of Extension
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) represents a technology that has the potential to enhance many aspects of the Atlantic sea scallop fishery. Driven by fishery management and market forces, fishery product traceability benefits fisheries managers, consumers, and fishermen. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of RFID technology in the scallop fishery, a solution is proposed that would help establish clear Chain of Custody (CoC) so that the scallop supply chain can be better documented. Implementation and acceptance of any new technology will hinge on effective communication and extension efforts that can leverage the multi-benefit aspects of adopting RFID into the fishery.

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) with atmospheric concentrations that have nearly tripled since pre-industrial times. Wetlands account for a large share of global CH4 emissions, yet the magnitude and factors controlling CH4 fluxes in tidal wetlands remain uncertain. We synthesized CH4 flux data from 100 chamber and 9 eddy covariance (EC) sites across tidal marshes in the conterminous United States to assess controlling factors and improve predictions of CH4 emissions. This effort included creating an open-source database of chamber-based GHG fluxes (https://doi.org/10.25573/serc.14227085). Annual fluxes across chamber and EC sites averaged 26 ± 53 g CH4 …

Investigation Of The Distribution Of Transuranic Radionuclides In Marine Sediment At The Montebello Islands, Western Australia, Madison Williams-Hoffman, Megan Cook, Jack K. Clegg, Ross Kleinschmidt, Pere Masqué, Mathew P. Johansen
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Three nuclear weapons tests were conducted in the 1950s at the Montebello Islands, Western Australia. The detonations were of different yields and configurations (two tower tests, one ship test), and led to substantial radionuclide contamination within the surrounding terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The region possesses great ecological and recreational significance, particularly within the marine environment. However, studies conducted so far have largely neglected the marine ecosystem which makes up the majority of the Montebello Island Marine Park and in which most test fallout would have deposited. Here we investigated the distribution of the transuranic radionuclides 238Pu, 239,240Pu and 241Am in …
