Degradation Of Remnant Vegetation, Richard George, Don Mcfarlane, Russell Speed
Degradation Of Remnant Vegetation, Richard George, Don Mcfarlane, Russell Speed
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Remnant vegetation, wetlands and riverine systems on both private and public land throughout south-western Australia are being rapidly degraded by dryland salinity, inundation, silting, nutrient enrichment and weed invasion. Richard George, Don McFarlane and Russel Speed outline some of the reasons why this is happening and provide some case studies that highlight actions to protect these remnants.

Abandon The Paddock : A Valid Method Of Rehabilitation?, Max Abensperg-Traun
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The scale of the revegetayion needed to combat land and habitat degradation can only be achieved over a long period of time. An alternative to revegitation is to abandon parts oof the farm for passive regeneration. Max Abensperg-Traun, and his colleagues from CSIRO Division of Wildlife and Ecology, report on some outomes from such a strategy.

Something Fishy Is Going On - Aquaculture, David Berry
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Aquaculture id Australia's fastest growing primary industry. Product from fish farms is currently valued at $399 million, forecast to exceed $5oo million by 2000.
Whilst the figure pales into insignificance alongside world production (about $45 billion) it does represent a huge window of opportunity for prospective investors and for Australian primary producers who are keen to diversify.
David Berry reports on the prospects for yabbie and marron farming in Western Australia.

Land resources series
This report presents descriptions to accompany land resource maps of the Wellington- Blackwood district, east of Bunbury in the south-west of Western Australia. The maps cover an area of about 760,000 hectares and are presented as two map sheets at a scale of 1:100,000. Four different physiographic zones cover the survey area: • The Western Darling Range Zone occupies the major portion of the area and consists of a deeply dissected lateritic plateau overlying crystalline rocks. Three soil-landscape systems containing 24 subsystems have been identified and mapped within this zone. • The Eastern Darling Range Zone is in the south-east …

Inventory For Endangered, Threatened, And Rare Plant And Animal Species Within The Floodplain Corridor Of The Middle Loup River Basin, Nebraska Natural Heritage Program
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
In April 1996 the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) entered into agreement with the U. S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) to conduct inventory work for endangered, threatened, and rare plant and animal species within the floodplain corridor of the Middle Loup River basin in Nebraska. This district includes the Farwell and Sargent Irrigation Districts. The impetus for such inventory work is the renewal of current water services contracts between BOR and irrigation districts that will expire in 1988. BOR has stated the need to balance the interests of the irrigation districts and their clients, with …

Estimated Nitrogen Fluxes And Nitrogen-Chlorophyll Relationships In Tampa Bay, 1985-1994, Gerold Morrison, Anthony Janicki, David Wade, James Martin, Gabriel Vargo, Roger Johansson
Reports
Cultural eutrophication driven by anthropogenic nutrient loadings has been identified as a priority problem affecting the water quality of Tampa Bay. Bay management programs therefore wish to control future nutrient loads, an effort that will be complicated by the continuing population growth projected for the watershed in coming decades. The eutrophication management efforts is "resource-based" seeking to maintain water clarity in the bay that is adequate to support seagrass at target acreage levels. Among the factors affecting water clarity, anthropogenic nitrogen loadings and corresponding increases in phytoplankton density appear most amenable to management.

Flash Pyrolysis Of Anthropogenic And Natural Organic Matter In Polluted Sediments, Sami T. Abdel Bagi, Michael A. Kruge, Gary L. Salmon
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
INTRODUCTION - Combustion products along with spilled petroleum and industrial chemicals contribute to environmental degradation by contaminating soils and sediments. Such anthropogenic organic matter (OM), if preserved in sediments, can serve an archival function, documenting the local, history of industrial pollution. Christensen and Zhang (1993) determined the sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (P AH) to Lake Michigan from sedimentary records, finding that coal combustion was a major source for PAHs in these sediments. Bodzek and Luks-Betlej (1993) reported that atmospheric deposition is the main source of PAH in soils of the heavily industrialized Upper Silesia region of Poland. Smith and …
Septic Systems For Homeowners, William O. Thom
Septic Systems For Homeowners, William O. Thom
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Septic systems are an effective, long-standing method for collecting, treating, and disposing of wastewaters from rural and surburban homes that do not have access to municipal sewage treatment plants. They collect and treat wastewaters produced in the bathroom, kitchen, and laundry of a home before discharging them into the soil. These systems are used by homeowners in every county in Kentucky.
Improving Dairy Farm Performance, Ruth Dilley
Improving Dairy Farm Performance, Ruth Dilley
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Western Austraian sairy farmers produce more milk per cow and per farm than their eastern Sttates counterparts and the milk is also of higher quality. But there is always room for improvement and as grain prices rise it is crucial that maximum benefit is derived from the cheapest feed source - the pasture. With this in mind Ruth Dilley looks at the Dairy Farm Performance Program - a comprihensive farm database developed by Agriculture Western Australia.
