Environmental Assessment Animal Damage Control On Public Lands Administered By The U.S. Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management, Casper District, Wyoming, United States Department Of The Interior Bureau Of Land Management

Environmental Assessments (WY)

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) recognize that native animals are resources of value and interest to the American people. Animal damage control (ADC) management may be required to minimize depredations to livestock and wildlife species; to protect threatened and endangered species; to maintain viable populations of native wildlife species; to preserve ecologically unique areas; to minimize rodent and other wildlife damage to cropland, grassland, and forestland; and, to suppress animal-borne diseases. ADC functions as a supplement to, not a substitute for, standard husbandry practices and techniques.

Red Mud : Cutting Pollution And Boosting Yields, Rob Summers Jan 1994

Red Mud : Cutting Pollution And Boosting Yields, Rob Summers

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A by-product from the refining of bauxite ore in the South-West is proving a bonus for agriculture.

When spread over the land, not only is it improving soil quality, but it is helping to prevent leaching of phosphorus and the consequent massive algal blooms in the waterways.

Bauxite residue is also showing considerable promise in human and animal effluent disposal systems, composting urban refuse, sewage treatments and as a road base.

Western Australia is now in the forefront of this research which is attracting world-wide interest.

Modeling Daily Production Of Aquatic Macrophytes From Irradiance Measurements: A Comparative Analysis, Richard C. Zimmerman, Alejandro C. Pasini, Randall S. Alberte

OES Faculty Publications

The importance of submerged aquatic macrophytes to coastal ecosystems has generated a need for knowledge of minimum light levels that will support the maintenance and restoration of healthy populations. Our goals were (1) to evaluate the sensitivity to natural, non-sinusoidal fluctuations in irradiance I of analytical integration techniques for calculating daily carbon gain, (2) to evaluate the Hsat (the daily period of I-saturated photosynthesis) model of daily production relative to models based on instantaneous photosynthesis vs irradiance (P vs I) and (3) to provide some guidance for the temporal density of irradiance data required for accurate estimation of …

Prestressed Concrete Pipe Failure Jordan Aqueduct, Reach 3, United States Bureau Of Reclamation

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The Bureau of Reclamation conducted failure investigations to identify the cause(s) of a catastrophic rupture of prestressed concrete pipe under impressed current cathodic protection, which occurred on Reach 3 of the Jordan Aqueduct near Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 7, 1984. The multidisciplinary analyses included corrosion, design, petrographic, structural, and metallurgical investigations. From the onset of the failure, the issue was one of reconciling cathodic overprotection and defective (longitudinally cracked) prestressing wire. The report contains a summary of the findings from Reclamation investigations.

Savant Sage Record Of Decision, United States Forest Service Jan 1994

Savant Sage Record Of Decision, United States Forest Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The 7,500-acre Savant Sage Resource Area forms a mountainous backdrop and prominent landscape for the communities of Athol, Belmont and the surrounding areas. The majority of the area was burned by the fires of the late 1800's, and there has been little timber resource management since. During early scoping activities, the public expressed concern for personal use of water resources in the area; the importance of visual resources to both local residents and seasonal visitors to the area; the forest health of the area; and the complexity of the area as a whole.

Open Stream Collection And Diversion: An Added Dimension In Providing Water For Grazing Animals, United States Bureau Of Land Management Jan 1994

Open Stream Collection And Diversion: An Added Dimension In Providing Water For Grazing Animals, United States Bureau Of Land Management

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

This technical note describes an effective system for collecting water from open streams and conveying it several miles via pipeline systems to watering troughs in arid locations. Perhaps one of the greatest challenges in managing lands that produce forage for grazing animals is to strike a desirable balance between forage and water. However, on native grazing lands, this is rarely the case due to terrain and uneven distribution of water. The "open stream collection and diversion system" addresses this issue with a specific engineering solution.

Tolerance Of Bitter Compounds By An Herbivore, Cavia Porcellus, Dale L. Nolte, J. Russell Mason, Stanley Lewis Jan 1994

Tolerance Of Bitter Compounds By An Herbivore, Cavia Porcellus, Dale L. Nolte, J. Russell Mason, Stanley Lewis

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Many plant defensive chemicals are bitter to humans. Because of this taste characteristic, and because bitter compounds are often toxic, such substances, and the plants that contain them, are regarded as generally unpalatable to wildlife. These assumptions may be unwarranted. To test the hypothesis that herbivores are indifferent to 'bitter' tastants, we investigated the responsiveness of guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) to denatonium benzoate, denatonium saccharide, limonene, L-phenylalanine, naringin, quebracho, quinine, Ro-Pel (a commercial animal repellent containing denatonium saccharide) and sucrose octaacetate. Only quinine and sucrose octaacetate slightly but significantly reduced feeding (P < 0.05). Our findings are inconsistent with the notion that herbivores generally avoid what humans describe as bitter tastes.

Getting The Best From The Woolbelt, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Articles in this issue of the Journal of Agriculture discuss prospects for the wool industry and strategies for wool growers to increase their income and their long term viability.

The impact of low wool prices is greatest in the 'woo/belt' (see map) and the southern pastoral region. There is a need to boost the profitability of wool production and to increase income from sources other than wool in these regions.

The Productivity and Diversification Initiative for Wool Growers is refocussing Department of Agriculture resources to assist wool growers reduce costs, increase productivity and diversify into alternative enterprises.

The strategies recommended …

No-Tillage Sowing Decreases Water Erosion On Loamy Soils And Increases Earthworm Activity, Kevin Bligh Jan 1994

No-Tillage Sowing Decreases Water Erosion On Loamy Soils And Increases Earthworm Activity, Kevin Bligh

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

No-tillage sowing places seed and fertiliser in the soil without loosening all of the topsoil. Soil is cultivated only in the sown rows, leaving the inter-row areas largely undisturbed.

No-tillage sowing reduces both wind and water erosion. Soil structure is generally improved, and pasture regeneration is increased because seed is not buried too deeply for re-establishment.

Two long-term trials were establis_hed on loamy soils to determine effects of tillage and cropping on runoff and soil loss.

Using Saltland In Pakistan : An Australian Connection, Ed Barrett-Lennard, Riaz Qureshi

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Pakistan and Australia have a common enemy in salt. In each country millions of hectares of previously productive land have been affected by salt (or have the potential to become saline) because of inappropriate agricultural development. Since 1989 the Western Australian Department of Agriculture has participated in a research project in Pakistan which involves revegetation of salt land using Australian shrubs. Early results are very promising.
