Effects Of Domestic Wastewater Effluent On The Water Quality And Aquatic Macroinvertebrates In A Sharp County, Arkansas Stream, Linda E. Moss, George L. Harp
Effects Of Domestic Wastewater Effluent On The Water Quality And Aquatic Macroinvertebrates In A Sharp County, Arkansas Stream, Linda E. Moss, George L. Harp
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the effluent of the Ash Flat Wastewater Treatment Plant changes the water quality or aquatic macroinvertebrate community structure of North Big Creek. Weekly water samples were analyzed for pH, N, P, COD, TSS and fecal coliform bacteria from 17 June to 19 August 1992. Aquatic macroinvertebrates were collected biweekly using a Turtox Indestructible™ Dip Net, and density indices were calculated. Station 1, above the effluent, was a spring habitat. Fecal coliform, N, P, TSS and COD values were higher at this station, while the aquatic macroinvertebrate community was relatively simple. The …

For Whom Is The Rural Economy Resilient? Initial Effects Of Drought In Western Sudan, Leslie C. Gray, Michael Kevane
For Whom Is The Rural Economy Resilient? Initial Effects Of Drought In Western Sudan, Leslie C. Gray, Michael Kevane
Economics
This discussion piece addresses two recent debates: entitlement theory and the resilience of rural systems. The authors find that in western Sudan entitlement theory provides a specific and useful framework for understanding the nature of the crisis confronting the society. Arguments about the resilience of rural systems, however, need to be more closely examined and will depend on site-specific factors. The rural economy and society of western Sudan were not found to be resilient.
The Dilemma Of Dredging And Dredged Material Disposal In The Aquatic Waters Of Rhode Island And Its Impact On The Regional Marina Industry, Darryl J. Keith
The Dilemma Of Dredging And Dredged Material Disposal In The Aquatic Waters Of Rhode Island And Its Impact On The Regional Marina Industry, Darryl J. Keith
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Since the closures, in 1971, of the Prudence Island and Brenton Reef disposal sites, water-related industries have not had aquatic disposal of dredged sediments as a management option. The marina industry in Rhode Island has been especially impacted as natural sedimentation processes have reduced the water depths at many of these locations and have resulted in the loss of business as operators have been unable to operate their marinas to their fullest potential. The elimination of this option is based on political and environmental concerns over declines in local commercial fisheries which are alleged to be the result of the …
Implications Of Soviet And Russian Nuclear Waste Dumping In The Arctic Marine Environment, Jeffrey L. Canfield
Implications Of Soviet And Russian Nuclear Waste Dumping In The Arctic Marine Environment, Jeffrey L. Canfield
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This study examines fragmentary information on ocean dumping of radioactive wastes conducted by the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation from 1959 to the present, then assays the impact of this activity in terms of the legal historical, oceanographic and political contexts. Lacking accurate and thorough data on many aspects of the activity, it has been necessary to infer and extrapolate from what is know about the impact of radioactive materials on analogous ocean sites and regimes where radionuclides have been introduced and monitored by other states. Preliminary assessments are provided for the impact on human uses of resources in …
The Role Played By Semisubmersible Exploratory Drilling Platforms As A Vector In Marine Biological Introductions, Sean S. Bercaw
The Role Played By Semisubmersible Exploratory Drilling Platforms As A Vector In Marine Biological Introductions, Sean S. Bercaw
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Through discussion of Semisubmersible Exploratory Drilling Platforms and their role as vectors in marine biological introductions, this paper establishes a base of knowledge for future referral. Included in this project are details of semisubmersibles, their unique characteristics and operations, historical movements, past introductions, future operations, and continuing potential for invasions. The significance of semisubmersibles as biological vectors is further addressed. Three criteria will be used to assess the significance of the role of semisubmersibles in the introduction of alien species: first, what is the rate of SEDP movements over time; second, how are SEDP movements unique, and what role does …
Nonpoint Source Pollution From Agricultural Runoff: An Analysis Of Problems, Solutions, And The Remedial Action Plan Process For The St. Louis River Basin, Thomas V. Giddings
Nonpoint Source Pollution From Agricultural Runoff: An Analysis Of Problems, Solutions, And The Remedial Action Plan Process For The St. Louis River Basin, Thomas V. Giddings
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Agricultural nonpoint source pollution is the pollution coming from agricultural production, which has no clear origin. It comes from a diffuse source, such as a farm field or an animal holding area. While programs and studies probe every facet of point sources and extol the efforts of point source clean-up, the relatively more difficult task of identifying nonpoint sources and the process of proposing to do something about them has been largely ignored. Reducing the adverse impacts on the environment from farm related activities requires knowledge of the various pollutants and how pollutant pathways can be interrupted. Nutrients, and pesticides …
Five Marine Resource Management Programs: Innovations And Common Themes, Louisa Rand Moore
Five Marine Resource Management Programs: Innovations And Common Themes, Louisa Rand Moore
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper investigates essential elements of marine resource management programs, particularly how they are initiated and what is needed for their success. The focus of this paper is on management planning for sites where marine resources are still largely intact as opposed to those which are severely disturbed. Planning is aimed at determining carrying capacity of the marine systems and limiting disturbances accordingly. Question for this inquiry were developed from research of a bay in eastern Maine where marine resources have not been severely disturbed, but are vulnerable to over-exploitation due to lack of coordinated management. Using these questions, five …

Towards A Regional Coastal Zone Management Program In The Oecs, Keith E. Nichols
Towards A Regional Coastal Zone Management Program In The Oecs, Keith E. Nichols
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The Islands of the Lesser Antilles are described as "truly archipelagic, enjoying the characteristic features of both oceanic and coastal islands." Once considered pristine and far removed from the influences of pollution from coastal areas, they are now faced with the realities of their own solid waste problems, resource degradation and over-exploitation, as well as human health impacts from contaminated rivers and coastal areas. Each of these territories can be considered packages of economic, political and cultural networks, attempting to provide for individual and nationwide needs while seeking economic growth and self-sufficiency. If developed properly and used in tandem with …
Conflicts In Use: The Impacts Of The Oil And Gas Industry On The Herring Fishery In The North Sea, Cornelia Ann Pasche
Conflicts In Use: The Impacts Of The Oil And Gas Industry On The Herring Fishery In The North Sea, Cornelia Ann Pasche
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The interaction of the herring (Clupea harengus) with the oil and gas industry in the North Sea is reviewed. The population crash of the herring in the early 1970's and the subsequent closing of that important fishery between 1977 and 1983 has drawn considerable attention to the influences, both biotic and abiotic, affecting the recruitment to the North Sea stock. Current accepted theory points to a change in oceanic current and the subsequent decrease in salinity in the North Sea region, resulting in a change in plankton availability for larval herring as the cause of the recruitment failure during the …
User Perceptions Of The Environmental Quality And Governance System Of Narragansett Bay, Mary-Beth Gadzik Hart
User Perceptions Of The Environmental Quality And Governance System Of Narragansett Bay, Mary-Beth Gadzik Hart
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper hypothesizes that there will be differences in perception between the users and managers of Narragansett Bay with respect to (1) the Bay's environmental quality; and (2) the effectiveness of the governance system established to manage and regulate the Bay. Any discrepancies in the perception of the quality of Narragansett Bay's shoreline and water resources among various user groups are likely to contribute to conflicts between users, and a less efficient approach to the management of Bay resources. Thus, the identification of where management policies may diverge from the interests of public user groups will serve to improve resource …
Analysis Of Factors Contributing To Environmental Activism: A Case Study Of Beach Clean-Up Participants, Elizabeth Ann Fuller
Analysis Of Factors Contributing To Environmental Activism: A Case Study Of Beach Clean-Up Participants, Elizabeth Ann Fuller
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This study was initiated to investigate factors which contribute to environmental activism. Towards this end, three hypotheses were investigated. First, it was hypothesized that beach clean-up participants would harbor pro-environmental attitudes. Second, it was hypothesized that participants would be relatively young, politically liberal, well-educated, and wealthy. Finally, it was hypothesized that particular types of social structure would influence a person's decision to participate in a beach clean-up. Specifically, it was hypothesized that participants at each clean-up location would be clique members and/or would be structurally equivalent. Surprising, it was revealed that there was virtually no difference in attitude between the …

Human activities already threaten the globe's physical and biological systems. Worldwide, species extinction rates are estimated to be one thousand times what they would be in the absence of human activity (Wilson 1988). Raven (1988) estimates that 25% of the world's plant and animal species existing in 1985 may be extinct by 2015, with most extinctions occurring in tropical regions. While these extinction rates are staggering, global warming would greatly accelerate extinction rates that some scientists believe may already exceed those accompanying the decline of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago (Wolf 1987).
An Empirical Model Of Gastric Evacuation Rates For Fish And An Analysis Of Digestion In Piscivorous Brown Trout, E. He, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh
An Empirical Model Of Gastric Evacuation Rates For Fish And An Analysis Of Digestion In Piscivorous Brown Trout, E. He, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
The gastric evacuation rates of brown trout Salmo trutta (0.9–1.6 kg) feeding on fingerling rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (3.5–7.6 g) were measured in the laboratory at five temperatures (4.5, 9.0, 14.0, 19.0, and 22.5°C). Instantaneous gut evacuation rates (Re) increased exponentially with temperature (T): Re = 0.053se^0.073T, r^2 = 0.98; they varyied from 7%sh^–1 at 4.5°C to 29%sh^–1 at 22.5°C. Linear regressions described the relationship between time and qualitative measures of fish digestion, thus allowing investigators to determine how long an ingested fish would be identifiable at different temperatures. An analysis of published evacuation rates (N = 121) of 22 …
Snake River Sockeye Salmon Habitat And Limnological Research, David Teuscher, Doug Taki, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh
Snake River Sockeye Salmon Habitat And Limnological Research, David Teuscher, Doug Taki, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Historically, thousands of Snake River Sockeye salmon returned to the Sawtooth Valley to spawn. Evermann (1896) reported that the Sawtooth Valley Lakes were teeming with red fish. Bjornn (196~) estimated that 4,360 sockeye returned to Redfish Lake in 1955. These numbers no longer exist. In the 1980's, less than 50 Snake River sockeye salmon survived to spawn (Bowler 1990). Since 19-90, only 13 sockeye have returned. Because of recent declines, the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes (SBT) petitioned the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS-) to list Snake River sockeye as endangered. As a result, Snake River sockeye were listed and the Bonneville Power …
Effects Of Moonlight And Daylight On Hydroacoustic Estimates Of Pelagic Fish Abundance, Chris Luecke, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh
Effects Of Moonlight And Daylight On Hydroacoustic Estimates Of Pelagic Fish Abundance, Chris Luecke, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
To determine how moonlight and daylight affect hydroacoustic estimates of fish abundance, we used a dual-beam transducer and echo integration to survey pelagic fish (primarily Bonneville ciscoes Prosopium gemmifer) in Bear Lake, Utah and Idaho. During the new moon, the fish were dispersed (not schooling) below the thermocline, chiefly at the depths of 10–20 m. At full moon, they were dispersed but much closer to the bottom, where they were difficult to detect. Acoustic estimates offish density and biomass during full moons were approximately 50% of values derived during new moons. A diel survey during a new moon indicated that …

Snapshot In Time, Repeat Photography On The Boise National Forest 1870-1992, United States Department Of Agriculture
Snapshot In Time, Repeat Photography On The Boise National Forest 1870-1992, United States Department Of Agriculture
Forestry
A forest health crisis of unprecedented proportions faced the Boise National Forest in the early years of the 1990's. Six years of drought set the stage for catastrophic outbreaks of insect and disease in the various tree communities of the forest, and wildfires burned hotter and more frequently than at any time in the past. In our often desperate search for ways to moderate the crisis, we turned to the notion of repeat photography to try to understand what happened in the past and how things are different now. We hoped to find some clues that would help shape management …
