13.3.5. Ecology Of Northern Prairie Wetlands, Jan Eldridge Jan 1990

13.3.5. Ecology Of Northern Prairie Wetlands, Jan Eldridge

Waterfowl Management Handbook

Glaciated wetlands of the prairie pothole region are among the most productive of ecosystems. In terms of primary productivity (vegetation) they rank with the tropical rain forests (Fig. 1). Wetland productivity is controlled by water levels that fluctuate over time. However, primary productivity is highly variable for a variety of reasons including the variance in annual precipitation, the nature of the glacial till, the salinity of the water, the relation of the basin to the groundwater, and the temperature extremes typical of a continental climate.

My purpose is to review the basic patterns that contribute to the productivity of prairie …

13.4.3. Managing Agricultural Foods For Waterfowl, James K. Ringelman Jan 1990

13.4.3. Managing Agricultural Foods For Waterfowl, James K. Ringelman

Waterfowl Management Handbook

Agriculture, more than any other human activity, has had a profound influence on North American waterfowl. Most agricultural effects have been detrimental, such as the conversion of grassland nesting cover to cropland, the widespread drainage of wetlands, and the use of pesticides that may poison waterfowl or their food. However, some by-products of agriculture have been beneficial, particularly grain or other foods left as residue after harvest. Many waterfowl are opportunistic feeders, and some species such as Canada geese (Branta canadensis), snow geese (Chen caerulescens), mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), northern pintails (A. acuta), …

Comparison Of Pressurized And Gravity Distribution Systems For Wastewater Treatment, Mark A. Gross, Stan Neal, Belinda Ederington, Robert Muldoon Jan 1990

Comparison Of Pressurized And Gravity Distribution Systems For Wastewater Treatment, Mark A. Gross, Stan Neal, Belinda Ederington, Robert Muldoon

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Pressurized distribution of domestic wastewater over a sand filter surface achieves better treatment than gravity distribution. The pressurized distribution system caused the filter to better remove organics (BOD₅) and suspended solids. Pressurized distribution also caused the sand filter to achieve more complete nitrification than the filter having gravity distribution. Two slow sand filters 15.2 cm wide, 3.1 m long and 15.2 cm deep were built and loaded with domestic septic tank effluent for 250 days at a rate of 5.1 cm per day. Influent and effluent samples were collected and analyzed for five-day Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD₅), suspended solids, ammonia- …

Effects Of Lake Management On Chemical, Physical, And Phycological Characteristics Of A Hypereutrophic Reservoir, Kaye J. Surratt Jan 1990

Effects Of Lake Management On Chemical, Physical, And Phycological Characteristics Of A Hypereutrophic Reservoir, Kaye J. Surratt

Masters Theses

Lake Charleston is a 1.1 billion gallon capacity side channel reservoir which was constructed in 1982 as a public drinking water supply for the City of Charleston in Coles County, Illinois. Past studies of the lake indicated an increase in eutrophication and the capacity to support large algal populations. Recent lake management practices include copper sulfate applications as an algicide and aeration to reduce flavor and odor.

In order to assess present lake status and to evaluate the effectiveness of lake management practices, two lake sites were sampled on a weekly basis from May to October, 1989. Chemical, physical, and …

Photoacoustic Detection Of Carbonaceous Atmospheric Aerosols, Duane Jackson Jan 1990

Photoacoustic Detection Of Carbonaceous Atmospheric Aerosols, Duane Jackson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The role of carbonaceous aerosols in the atmosphere as a risk factor in climatic changes and health effects and state-of-the-art monitoring processes are briefly presented here. In particular, development of a photoacoustic technique for measuring the concentration of carbonaceous particles is discussed. The photoacoustic measurement is based upon detection of pressure waves generated by localized time-dependent heating of air inside the photoacoustic chamber. Heating of air inside the chamber is due to absorption of visible laser radiation by carbon particles present inside the chamber. The laser radiation is chopped, and the resultant pressure signal produced by subsequent heating and cooling …

Monitoring Seagrass Distribution And Abundance Patterns: A Case Study From The Chesapeake Bay, Robert J. Orth, Kenneth A. Moore, Judith F. Nowak

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Seagrasses, or submerged aquatic vegetation (SA V), have been mapped in the Chesapeake Bay five times between 1978 and 1987 with standard aerial photographic techniques, resulting in annual reports on SAV distribution. Acquisition of the vertical photography at a scale of 1:24,000, adhering to strict quality-assurance guidelines based on sun angle, tidal stage, cloud cover, wind speed, and season, has produced excellent, high-contrast imagery delineating beds of SAV from adjacent, unvegetated areas. Ground-truthing data from various State, Federal, and public organizations have corroborated the photographic data base. (more ...)

The Sidney Gravel And Kimball Formation, Supposed Parts Of The Ogallala Group (Neogene), Are Not Objectively Mappable Units, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Jan 1990

The Sidney Gravel And Kimball Formation, Supposed Parts Of The Ogallala Group (Neogene), Are Not Objectively Mappable Units, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

In the 1930s. G. L. Lueninghoener and A. L. Lugn prepared geologic maps of several counties. including Kimball and Cheyenne in the southern Nebraska Panhandle. for the Nebraska Geological Survey. Rock units designated as the Kimball Formation and the underlying Sidney Gravel were shown on these maps. Studies by Swinehart (1974). Breyer (1975; 1981). and Diffendal (1985) demonstrated that these units could not be defined in several areas in western Nebraska. Results of this study show clearly that the Kimball Formation and Sidney Gravel cannot be traced for more than a few kilometers from their type areas.

The Kimball Formation …

Review Of Report Of The Arl Serials Prices Project, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

If you feel, after your latest cruise through your research library, that you were adrift in a very expensive sea of paper, you are certainly not alone. As a researcher at a research university, it is very easy to use the resources of your library and to be confronted with the funding problems of that library only as those problems affect your particular area of interest. In recent years most researchers at universities have been told that subscriptions to journals will have to be cut in their area and that less of the library materials budget will be available to …

Ectoparasites Of Ring-Necked Pheasants In Nebraska, William R. Payne, David W. Oates, Glen E. Dappen

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

In 1971, 1983 and 1984, ectoparasites were identified on 61 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) from Nebraska. Birds were collected throughout the state from 11 of 93 counties. Four species of chewing lice (Mallophaga) were collected: Lipeurus maculosus, Goniodes colchici, Lagopoecus coichicus and Amyrsidea megalosoma. One species of analgid mite, Megninia sp. was collected. Apparently, this species is new and undescribed. The four mallophagan species have not been reported from Nebraska.

The 1987 Chesapeake Bay Agreement: A Model Of Intergovernmental And Multi-State Cooperation In Estuary/Coastal Resource Management, John F. Faltus Jan 1990

The 1987 Chesapeake Bay Agreement: A Model Of Intergovernmental And Multi-State Cooperation In Estuary/Coastal Resource Management, John F. Faltus

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The 1980s witnessed an increased awareness of the problems of estuary and coastal water pollution. The medical waste problems of 1988 heightened public awareness of this problem and showed that coastal pollution is not just isolated but rather is a regional problem which requires regional solutions. During the 1980x the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the States of Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia worked together to forge two agreements, one in 1983, and more significantly a broader agreement in 1987, in which they agreed to work together to develop specific goals and objectives to address and solve …

Should The Ports Of New Orleans And Mobile Be United Under A Single Port Authority, Charles E. Dorsett Jan 1990

Should The Ports Of New Orleans And Mobile Be United Under A Single Port Authority, Charles E. Dorsett

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

United States ports along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico are engaged in fierce competition among themselves to attract existing and future trade. This competition has served to force modernization and expansion of facilities in all the ports. The effort is running into the billions of dollars and there are concerns that there is too much duplication of costly facilities. The Port of New Orleans benefits from its location at the southern terminus of the Mississippi River System. Until five years ago it was the sole significant transhipment node between the nation's midsection and its customers and suppliers. In …

An Evaluation Of Noaa's Role In Ocean Dumping Policy Implementation, Kenneth W. Barton Jan 1990

An Evaluation Of Noaa's Role In Ocean Dumping Policy Implementation, Kenneth W. Barton

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Dumping of wastes into the ocean has gone on for years especially in the New York Bight. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is mandated by Title II of the Ocean Dumping Act of 1972 to investigate the effects of ocean dumping on the marine environment. However, there is a perception within Congress, the public and other agencies that NOAA is not meeting it's responsibilities with regard to ocean dumping research. The effectiveness of NOAA's ocean dumping policies and programs and the difficulties in implementation experienced by the agency are evaluated by applying George Edwards' theory of policy implementation. …

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion: (Otec) Outlook For The Future, John M. Kroft Jan 1990

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion: (Otec) Outlook For The Future, John M. Kroft

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The temperature differential between the tropical ocean surface and deep waters represents tremendous energy potential. Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems represent an environmentally sound method to extract that energy resource. Included in this paper is a review of the history of OTEC, basic thermodynamic principles involved and major components of the system. The three basic types of OTEC systems are discussed, citing the various advantages and disadvantages of each. The resource extent and possible environmental impacts are examined from the U. S. perspective. After reviewing the conflicting ocean use interest involved, comparative cost calculations of energy types, and the …
