This manual describes the data that a versatile computer program USU-NETWK requires to complete a time dependent solution of flowrates and pressures throughout a pipe network. This program can be used for steady-state analysis and design, as well as simulation solutions through some period of time. In fact, unless specified otherwise, a steady-state solution is assumed.

Introduction: Manufacturers are continually seeking ways of improving the effectiveness of their erosion control products. Products currently in use include chemical as well as organic materials, and they are applied with varying degrees of success. The Fibers Division of the CONWED Corporation, one of the nation's most progressive producers of erosion control products, requested the comparative testing of some of their new products with those of some leading competitors. This report contains results of those tests.

PEP Overview

A property Estimation Program (PEP), utilizing MCI-property, TSA-property and property correlations and UNIFAC-derived activity coefficients, has been developed for the Apple Macintosh microcomputer to provide the user with several approaches to estimate S, Kow, Pv, H, Koc, and BCF depending on the information available.

Structural information required for the MCi and UNIFAC calculation routines can be entered using either Simplified Molecular Identification and Line Entry System (SMILES) notation or connection tables generated with commercially available two-dimensional drawing programs. The TSA module accepts 3-D atomic coordinates entered manually or directly reads coordinate files generated by molecular modeling software. The …

This study examines the cause, distribution and impact of a forest pathogen within the 71 forested hectares of the Sehome Hill Arboretum in urban Bellingham, Washington. The causal agent was determined by the identification of cultures from decaying wood in douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirbel) Franco) to be the root rotting basidiomycete Phellinus weirii (Muir.) Gilb. A ground survey of aboveground symptoms was used to detect 31 infection centers covering 6.64 hectares (9.2% of the Arboretum) of symptomatic trees. Atmospheric input of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) to water was studied and the effects of sea surface microlayer (SSM) determined. The York River system and the Perrin River areas were monitored with a drum skimmer and a high volume air sampler. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory under controlled conditions. The SSM extracted vapor phase PAH of low molecular weight from the air, and there, aromatic compounds went from dissolved into particulate phase very rapidly. Water covered with a natural SSM received much less atmospheric input of PAH than water without SSM in a given period of time. Henry's law …

The off-site regeneration of granulated activated charcoal(GAC), spent as a result of stripping of organics from aqueous waste streams, represents a burdensome cost both because of the actual cost of regeneration and legal liability associated with shipping a hazardous waste off-site: that liability is reflected in huge potential costs associated with mishaps enroute for the self-insured or high premiums paid to the casualty insurance companies for those generators that are insured by third parties. Thus there is a need for the development of a process to effect on-site regeneration of spent GAC cost-effectively.

Aqueous scrubbing in alkaline media for the removal of nitrogen oxides (NO_x) from flue gases using NaClO₂ as an oxidant is being investigated in the Chemical Engineering Department of New Jersey Institute of Technology. This thesis presents the findings of an experimental program that was conducted to estimate the capability of NaClO₂ aqueous solution to oxidize insoluble NO to soluble NO₂ in order to increase its solubility and thus prevent NO_x emission from entering the atmosphere from flue gases emitted by municipal incinerators or power plants.

Studies done by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) and the Arizona Fish and Game between 1978 and 1981 indicate that inadequate cover may be limiting the production and survival of largemouth bass at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA). As a result of these studies, NDOW initiated a contract in 1986 with the Lake Mead Research Center (LMRC) to investigate means of improving habitat for game fish by introducing natural and/or artificial cover.

During Phase I (1986-1987) of this contract, the shoreline of Lake Mead was surveyed for aquatic and terrestrial plant growth. Also during this time, submerged …

Two co—occurring deciduous forest myrmecochores, Asarum canadense and Jeffersonia diphylla, release their seeds at approximately the same time, and therefore potentially compete for ants as dispersers. Within a single woodlot, we placed seeds of both species inside a dense Jeffersonia population away from Asarum plants, inside a dense Asarum population away from Jeffersonia plants, and in a site where plants of neither species occurred. No preference was exhibited by ants where natural populations were absent. Preference at the other two sites was frequency dependent: ants preferred seeds of the introduced species. The upland deciduous forests of the Missouri River valley contain many plants typical of forests to the east of this area, which are assumed to have migrated northward and westward along the river in postglacial times. Previous workers have reported a gradient of decreasing species richness upstream among woody species, which is suggested to be the result of climatic gradients and differential dispersal capabilities of the immigrant species. Floristic work on all vascular species in eight woodland sites along the Nebraska-Iowa border quantifies the presence of similar gradients for herbaceous species, but of differing degrees. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts surveys of oyster spatfall (or "setting") in Virginia waters throughout the summer reproductive period. This survey provides an estimate of the potential of a particular area for receiving a "strike 11 or set of oysters on the bottom and helps define the timing of setting events. Information obtained by this effort is valuable to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) for its shell repletion program, and to private oyster growers, both of whom are interested in maximizing the timing of shell planting.
