Temporal And Spatial Variation In Pelagic Fish Abundance In Lake Mead Determined From Echograms, Gene R. Wilde, Larry J. Paulson
Publications (WR)
Echograms have been used extensively to locate and estimate the relative abundance of marine fish stocks (Cushing 1973). In freshwater, echograms have been used to describe vertical (Netsch et al. 1971; Eggers 1978; O'Brien et al. 1984; Matthews et al. 1985), spatial (O'Brien et al. 1984; Wanjala et al. 1986) and temporal (Baker and Paulson 1983) patterns in fish abundance. Although most uses of echograms have been qualitative, Mullan and Applegate (1969) and Matthews et al. (1985) obtained relative estimates of fish abundance by counting targets (fish) on echograms. However, neither Mullan and Applegate (1969) nor Matthews et al. (1985) …

The land imprinter and rangeland drill were compared for revegetation of a wildfire burn in the Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis) vegetation type. Seeding trials were conducted on strips 152 m wide and 1.6 km long. Seeded species were fairway wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum), luna pubescent wheatgrass (A. trichophorum), Russian wildrye (Elymus junceus), and Ladak alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Severe wind erosion on the study area occurred the first spring. Total seeded plant densities and cover were significantly higher with the imprinting treatment. Production of seeded plants was higher on the imprinted areas the first 2 years; thereafter, compensatory growth …

Across the United States, wildlife habitat has been substantially changed as human populations expand and land is used for human needs. These human uses and needs often compete with wildlife which increases the potential for conflicting human/wildlife interactions. In addition, segments of the public strive for protection for all wildlife; this protection can create localized conflicts between human and wildlife activities.

Estimating Forage Values For Grazing National Forest Lands, United States Department Of Agriculture Economic Research Service
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Every 5 years, the Forest Service is required to update its estimates of the value of Forest Service grazing. This report provides estimates of the maximum ability of ranchers to pay for Forest Service grazing. Abilities to pay vary greatly depending on the region of the country and assumptions about costs. Based on current cash costs, the value of Forest Service grazing is greater than the grazing fee. Based on longrun economic costs, the value of grazing is less than the grazing fee. In some regions of the United States, the longrun value of grazing is zero. These low longrun …

A Study Of Oxygen Precipitation In Heavily Doped Silicon, Robert Kurt Graupner
A Study Of Oxygen Precipitation In Heavily Doped Silicon, Robert Kurt Graupner
Dissertations and Theses
Gettering of impurities with oxygen precipitates is widely used during the fabrication of semiconductors to improve the performance and yield of the devices. Since the effectiveness of the gettering process is largely dependent on the initial interstitial oxygen concentration, accurate measurements of this parameter are of considerable importance. Measurements of interstitial oxygen following thermal cycles are required for development of semiconductor fabrication processes and for research into the mechanisms of oxygen precipitate nucleation and growth. Efforts by industrial associations have led to the development of standard procedures for the measurement of interstitial oxygen in wafers. However practical oxygen measurements often …

Fluorinated [Beta]-Sultones As Precursors To Fluorinated Sulfonic Acids, And New Fluorosulfonyl Containing Monomers/Polymers, Javid Mohtasham
Dissertations and Theses
Sulfur trioxide (SO₃) adds to fluoroolefins of the form RCF=CF₂, (where R = F, SF₅, CF₃, CF₃OCF₂, CF₂=CF(CF₂)₂, CF₃(CF₂)₃O, CF₃O(CF₂)₂OCF₂, or CH₂ClCHClCH₂), yielding the fluorinated [beta]-sultones, RCFCF₂OSO₂. In the case of CF₃(CF₂)₃OCF=CF₂, a reverse addition occurs, giving the sultone, CF₃(CF₂)₃CF₂2OCFCF₂SO₂O. The fluoro [beta]-sultones are capable of undergoing different reactions, such as rearrangement, hydrolysis, esterification, and polymerization. These reactions, will result in the formation of compounds containing the fluorosulfonyl grouping (SO₂F); it is this group that yields the corresponding sulfonic acid upon base/acid treatment.
The addition of sodium bisulfite to CF₃CF= CF₂ and CF₃(CF₂)₄CF=CF₂ in the presence of (C₆H₅CO)₂O₂ and Na₂B₄O₇·10H₂O …

Plio-Pleistocene Glacial Deposits In Northeastern Nebraska: New Exposures And Interpretations, Michael R. Voorhies, R. G. Goodwin

Recent interpretation of oxygen isotopic data for benthic and planktonic foraminifera recovered during ocean drilling programs suggest that world ice volume was greater than the ice volume of 18 thousand years ago (Late Wisconsinan) approximately 2.5 million years ago (Prentice and Matthews, Geology, November, 1988). This agrees well With biostratigraphic and paleoecologic interepretations drawn from sediment cores obtained from the Arctic Ocean Basin. The latter data suggest complete ice cover of the basin during the period 2.2-2.4 million years ago (Scott et at., G.S.A. Bulletin, February, 1989).

Ascidian Investigations In Hillsborough Bay, City Of Tampa Bay Study Group
Reports
The City of Tampa Bay Study Group has noticed high numbers of an anural solitary mogulid tunicate, of an unknown ascidian species, dominating some bottom communities of Hillsborough Bay during the winter. Ascidian concentrations have been found in excess of 4000/me , and lengths have ranged from O.25mm to 20mm for larvae and adults, respectively. Coincident with these high ascidian concentrations, excellent water clarity has been observed, where the bay bottom is visible through water of 2 to 3m depths. Ascidians can filter large volumes of seawater as part of their food gathering process. Although not found in Hillsborough Bay, …

Frost Injury To Wheat, S P. Loss
Frost Injury To Wheat, S P. Loss
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Frost injury has not been a major concern to the Western Australian wheat industry despite causing spectacular but irregular crop losses on some farms.
The development of suitable herbicides, direct drilling technology and the adoption of early flowering varieties in the late 1970s and early 1980s led to wheat crops being sown and flowering earlier than previously. This resulted in an increase in the incidence of frost damage.
Research into frost indicates that most wheat producers face low to moderate risks of yield loss caused by frost. However, individual farms in particular years can suffer devestating widespread losses. Grost injury …
