Arkansas' Timber Resource: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Richard A. Kluender, R. L. Willett Jan 1988

Arkansas' Timber Resource: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Richard A. Kluender, R. L. Willett

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Demand for forest products continues to rise. Arkansas provides about 4% of the U.S. total forest production and about 12% of the south central region production. Questions exist about the ability of current forest resources to completely meet anticipated future demand. In 1985, the U.S. Forest Service and the Arkansas Timber Study Committee began to analyze the existing forest base to determine whether future demand could be met from the current forest, or if not, what management changes were needed to help meet future demand. In 1985, Arkansas forests covered approximately 48% of the total land area of the state. …

Distribution, Abundance, And Biomass Of Freshwater Mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) In Lake St. Clair, Thomas F. Nalepa, Jeffrey M. Gauvin

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

A mussel population survey was conducted in Lake St. Clair with divers using SCUBA to sample at 29 stations throughout the lake. Mean abundance was 2 m-2 and mean biomass was 4.4 g dry wt m-2. Of the 18 species collected, Lampsilis radiata siliquoidea was by far the most abundant, accounting for 45% of all individuals. The age-frequency distribution of L. r. siliquoidea was dominated by individuals between 9 and 12 years old. In contrast, the second most abundant species, Leptodea fragilis, showed yearly variation in recruitment with no apparent trends in year class strength. Annual …

13.2.1. Waterfowl Use Of Wetland Complexes, Leigh H. Fredrickson, Frederic A. Reid Jan 1988

13.2.1. Waterfowl Use Of Wetland Complexes, Leigh H. Fredrickson, Frederic A. Reid

Waterfowl Management Handbook

Waterfowl are a diverse group of birds that have widely divergent requirements for survival and recruitment. Whistling-ducks, geese, and swans (Anserinae) and ducks (Anatinae) have contrasting life history requirements.

Several goose populations have expanded greatly despite extensive continental wetland losses and degradation. Most expanding populations nest in arctic areas where modifications or disturbance of nesting habitats have been minimal. These grazers often find suitable migratory and wintering habitats in terrestrial or agricultural environments. In contrast, ducks are less terrestrial and populations are influenced more by wetland characteristics, such as quality, total area of wetland basins, and size and configuration of …

13.3.1. Invertebrate Response To Wetland Management, Leigh H. Fredrickson Jan 1988

13.3.1. Invertebrate Response To Wetland Management, Leigh H. Fredrickson

Waterfowl Management Handbook

By gaining greater understanding and appreciation of wetland environments, managers have developed creative insights for waterfowl conservation. Among the most exciting new developments in the understanding of functional wetlands has been the recognition of the important roles of invertebrates in aquatic ecosystems. These roles include trophic linkage from primary production to secondary consumers such as waterfowl, packaging of specific nutritional components such as amino acids and micronutrients for vertebrate predators, and detrital processing of wetland organic material. Although specific invertebrate responses to various management techniques are not always predictable and may differ among invertebrate species, patterns related to water regimes, …

13.3.2. Initial Considerations For Sampling Wetland Invertebrates, Leigh H. Fredrickson, Frederic A. Reid Jan 1988

13.3.2. Initial Considerations For Sampling Wetland Invertebrates, Leigh H. Fredrickson, Frederic A. Reid

Waterfowl Management Handbook

As the importance of invertebrates to waterbird nutrition and detrital processing has become increasingly evident, the need for effective and efficient invertebrate sampling has grown. Identification of invertebrate responses to management requires sampling and selection of appropriate sampling equipment. Goals must be established according to qualitative or quantitative needs, organism characteristics, and wetland types. Management objectives often can be met by sampling specific invertebrates to index the effect of management rather than through long-term studies requiring large sample sizes and intensive effort. Certain wetland and invertebrate characteristics that should be considered when initiating invertebrate sampling are described below.

Investigation Of Tributyltin: Water/Sediment Interactions, Michael A. Unger Jan 1988

Investigation Of Tributyltin: Water/Sediment Interactions, Michael A. Unger

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Tributyltin (TBT) and its degradation products dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) have been quantitatively analyzed in environmental water samples using gas chromatography with flame photometric detection and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The butyltins were extracted from environmental samples with hexane/0.2% tropolone and derivatized with hexyl magnesium bromide to form hexylbutyltins. Full scanning GC/MS was used for confirmation of peak identifications and quantification was done by selective ion monitoring (methane chemical ionization) at m/z 319 (TBT) and m/z 347 (DBT, MBT and tripentyltin, the internal standard). Calibration curves were linear and detection limits were less than 2 ngL&\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}&. GC/MS and GC …

Response Of Fish Communities To Habitat Alteration In A Small Ozark Stream, Danny J. Ebert, Stephen P. Filipek

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

From 1984 to 1986, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department reconstructed and upgraded a portion of St. Hwy. 123 west of St. Hwy.7 at Pelsor, Arkansas. As a result of the construction, portions of Haw Creek, Johnson County, Arkansas, a third order stream in the Boston Mountains Ecoregion, were straightened and channelized. In reconstructing specific stream reaches, stream banks were riprapped and vegetated, gabions constructed and positioned, stream substrates and pool-riffle ratios altered. Instream and riparian habitat and fish biomass and diversity in altered reaches were radically altered. Channelized reaches became wide and shallow, lacking overstory cover and pools. Substrate …

Carbon Dioxide Emissions And Fossil Fuel Consumption A Canadian Perspective, John Peter Doucet Jan 1988

Carbon Dioxide Emissions And Fossil Fuel Consumption A Canadian Perspective, John Peter Doucet

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The potential climate change due to increased loading of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has emerged as one of the most significant environmental threats of the late twentieth century. An analysis of a variety of feasible energy demand scenarios for Canada indicates that if we continue to consume the same types and proportions of fuels as we do today, the expected demand for energy in the year 2005 would yield carbon dioxide emissions up to 52.5 per cent greater than that of 1985. On the other hand, if Canada were to alter the types and quantities of fuels required to …

Predicting Potential Aluminum Contamination Of Surface And Ground Waters From Acid Sulfate Enriched Drainages Emanating From Low Neutralization Capacity Watersheds, Anastasios D. Karathanasis, Vasilios P. Evangelou, Y. L. Thompson

KWRRI Research Reports

The composition of soil solutions and surface waters emanating from unreclaimed, or partially reclaimed, strip-mined watersheds with low buffering capacity in Kentucky were compared with soil solution compositions of unaffected strata in the watershed. The data suggest that almost 20 years after mining, most soil solutions and surface waters of the disturbed areas still contain high levels of dissolved Al, controlled primarily by the solubilities of a jurbanite-like mineral (upper limit) and alunite (lower limit). Soluble Al in solutions of undisturbed areas was consistent with the solubility of kaolinite or gibbsite. The absence of jurbanite x-ray diffraction peaks suggested the …

Recalibration Of Pagan River Water Quality Model, Albert Kuo, Gamble M. Sisson, Bruce J. Neilson Jan 1988

Recalibration Of Pagan River Water Quality Model, Albert Kuo, Gamble M. Sisson, Bruce J. Neilson

Reports

Two water quality models of the Pagan River were developed in the 1970s by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The first model was developed under the CSA (cooperative state agencies) program (Kuo, Lewis and Fang, 1976). It simulated the oxidation of organic matter and the effect that, and reaeration, had on the dissolved oxygen regime of the river. The model included four water quality parameters: salinity, dissolved oxygen, carbonaceous oxygen demand and nitrogenous oxygen demand. A later model, developed as part of the Hampton Roads 208 studies, was an expansion of the first one. It included the nitrogen and …

The Impact Of Public Policy On Portland's Waterfront, John G. Ferland Jan 1988

The Impact Of Public Policy On Portland's Waterfront, John G. Ferland

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In May, 1987, Portland voters approved by a 2-to-1 margin a referendum preventing non-marine development along its waterfront for at least five years. It has become clear that the vote was not just a Portland waterfront issue. To many, the vote was a statement of no confidence in growth regulations and unhappiness with the pace of development throughout the Greater Portland region. The vote illustrated that there is no consensus on Greater Portland's future. For Portland's waterfront, a lack of consensus is nothing new. Portland has debated waterfront policy in fits and starts for most of the 20th century. As …
