Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Daniel Magraw.
The conference will be held at the Aspen Lodge, adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado.
It was Wallace Stegner who called the national parks "the best idea we ever had." The continuing increases in usage attest to their popularity. National parks are created to preserve areas of special scenic and cultural value for enjoyment and use. Managing the parks in a manner that protects the important values and purposes for which they were created presents important and difficult …
Preliminary Study Of The Seagrasses In Middle Tampa Bay Between Apollo Beach And Simmons Park, Mangrove Systems, Inc.
Preliminary Study Of The Seagrasses In Middle Tampa Bay Between Apollo Beach And Simmons Park, Mangrove Systems, Inc.
Reports
Comparison of recent (1986) and earlier (1983) aerial photography indicated that an apparent recovery of seagrasses was occurring on the subtidal shelf north of Simmons Park (Ruskin) and south of Apollo Beach, in Middle Tampa Bay (Fig. 1). This was suggested by the numerous circular patches of grass observed on the offshore portions of the shelf. This observation provided the incentive to undertake a preliminary assessment of seagrass species composition, percent cover, and shoot density along transects in this area. This study was a cooperative effort between the Bay Study Program (City of Tampa) and Mangrove Systems, Inc.

Cliff-Height And Slope-Angle Relationships In A Chronosequence Of Quaternary Marine Terraces, San Clemente Island, California, Russell Crittenden, Daniel R. Muhs
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Interference Competition In A Heteromyid Community In The Great Basin Of Nevada, Usa, Cliff A. Lemen, Patricia W. Freeman
Interference Competition In A Heteromyid Community In The Great Basin Of Nevada, Usa, Cliff A. Lemen, Patricia W. Freeman
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Removal experiments with three species of heteromyid rodents were performed during two summers in the Great Basin of Nevada, USA. These experiments were designed to determine the importance of interference competition in these species by quantifying the short-term responses to the removal of one or more of the species. Our results indicate that the removal of a large species (Dipodomys merriami) does have a positive effect on a smaller species with a similar diet (Perognathus longimembris). These results and others presented are consistent with a hypothesis of interference competition. However, while there is short-term increase in …

Hydraulic Design Algorithms For Upgrading And Enhancing Water Distribution Systems, Don J. Wood, William T. Gilbert
Hydraulic Design Algorithms For Upgrading And Enhancing Water Distribution Systems, Don J. Wood, William T. Gilbert
KWRRI Research Reports
The primary objective of this work was to develop algorithms for directly determining design characteristics for effectively enhancing, modifying or adding to existing water distribution systems. This is accomplished by modifying the basic hydraulic network equations to explicitly determine required design parameters to just meet specified conditions. Initially work was completed on directly determining pipeline diameters and directly determining pipeline and network resistance characteristics. This work was published in technical journals and established the feasibility of the approach but did not demonstrate the scope and versitility of the proposed approach. In this report a general approach is developed and tested …

A Model For Assessing The Visual Resources Of River Basins As An Aid To Making Landuse Planning Decisions, Thomas J. Nieman, Diane S. Meshako, David Walters, Molly M. Davis, Cindy C. Elliot
KWRRI Research Reports
The visual quality of a river basin and its associated properties can be identified, evaluated and integrated into the landscape planning process. The model developed provides a quantitative methodology for determining visual quality on the basis of available Geographic Information System factors. These factors are utilized to develop the preference attributes, COLOR, FORM, TEXTURE and LINE, which are associated with the assessment of visual quality. The preference attributes are then combined through a decision making process into a continuum of DISTINCTIVE, GOOD, AVERAGE and MINIMAL visual quality and is expressed digitally in map format. By providing visual quality information in …
The Reclamation Of Boston Harbor: A Scientist's Perspective, Gordon T. Wallace Jr.
The Reclamation Of Boston Harbor: A Scientist's Perspective, Gordon T. Wallace Jr.
New England Journal of Public Policy
A major effort, costing in the neighborhood of $2 billion, is under way to restore the environmental quality of Boston Harbor. While Boston Harbor is unquestionably one of the most polluted urban estuaries in the world, it is also one of the least understood with respect to the basic physics, chemistry, and biology involved. This information is essential for the purpose of identifying processes that control the transport, effect, and fate of contaminants entering the estuary. Failure to obtain this information may lead to continued inappropriate and unnecessarily expensive solutions to a complex environmental problem. An effective solution will require …
