1986 Florida Water Quality Assessment 305(B) Technical Report, Joe Hand, Victoria Tauxe, John Watts, Bureau Of Water Quality Management - Division Of Environmental Programs
Reports
This report identifies the quality and trends of Florida's surface waters, the causes of water quality problems and the present cleanup activities conducted by DER and EPA to improve these problem areas. The assessment was accomplished by analyzing the available STORET water quality data for the 1970-1985 time period (STORET is EPA's computerized water quality data base). Data from approximately 97,000 water quality samples were assessed in this report which necessitated the extensive use of computer analysis. The computer analysis required assigning STORET stations to their respective EPA reaches. The EPA reach designation is a convenient national numbering system similar …

Long-Term Effects Of Tillage On The Retention And Transport Of Soil Water, H. D. Scott, L. S. Wood, W. M. Miley
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Quantitative measurements were made of the physical and chemical properties of two virgin prairie soils, Crowley and Jay, that remain in their native Arkansas environments and of similar soils that had been tilled extensively. Comparisons were made of soil properties at several depths. When compared with the tilled soils the virgin soils had higher organic matter contents, saturated hydraulic conductivities and water retained at several applied pressures. Bulk densities and hydraulic resistances were lower in the virgin soils. For the Crowley silt loam, values of pH and elemental contents of the virgin soil were higher than those of the tilled …

Algal Growth Potentials And Heavy Metal Concentrations Of The Primary Streams To Upper Beaver Lake, Richard L. Meyer, W. Reed Green, Kenneth F. Steele, Diana Wickliff
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Meyer and Green (1984) demonstrated the probable inhibition of algal growth potential by heavy metals in upper Beaver Lake. Upper Beaver Lake receives water from three tributaries. One contains a small reservoir and the combined streams receive sewage input. Collections were made approximately monthly at eight sites for the Algal Assay Bottle Test (AABT) and heavy metal analysis. In general, AABT results indicated that the collections above the sewage lnput were phosphorus limited while those below were nitrogen or combined nitrogen and phosphorus limited. Growth inhibition occurred during summer and early fall at various sites with greater inhibition at the …

The Behavior Of Soluble Salt In Sharkey Clay- Ii, J. T. Gilmour, R. E. Baser, H. D. Scott, J. A. Ferguson
The Behavior Of Soluble Salt In Sharkey Clay- Ii, J. T. Gilmour, R. E. Baser, H. D. Scott, J. A. Ferguson
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Soluble salts have been shown to accumulate in Arkansas soils in sufficient quantities to impair crop plant growth. The major objective of this study was to describe the behavior of soluble chloride salt over long time periods in Sharkey clay - a major Mississippi Delta soil. Prior to flooding rice, leaching of chloride in response to rainfall was observed. The inclusion of a sandy subsoil layer reduced this effect presumably by limiting downward movement of water under unsaturated conditions. No lateral movement of the chloride salt was found during the period prior to flooding. Removal of soluble chloride salts from …

Characterization Of Microorganisims After Feeding With Phenolic Compounds : Comparing A Domestic Sludge To An Industrial Sludge, Dianne Adamowitz
Theses
This study examined the effects of phenolic compounds on the populations in mixed liquors obtained from two very different treatment plants: the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners plant in Newark, and the Livingston, NJ municipal treatment plant. The dominant organisms were identified initially and after ten days exposure to phenol (100 ppm), and either 2-chlorophenol (20 ppm) or 2,6-dichlorophenol (10 ppm) in aerated batch reactors.
Results confirmed the remarkable similarity between the two mixed liquor populations, in spite of the significant differences in the operation of the two treatment plants.

As Assessment Of The Fisheries Research Program Of The National Marine Fisheries Service, Gary Page Bulmer
As Assessment Of The Fisheries Research Program Of The National Marine Fisheries Service, Gary Page Bulmer
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The nation's fishery management regime has three primary sets of players: the scientific advisors, the managers, and the fishermen. The advisors include federal agencies, state agencies, universities, regional and interstate bodies, and international bodies. The National Marie Fisheries Service (NMFS) has the lead role as scientific advisor. As used here "management" is defined broadly to include the instructions and funding that the researchers are given. "Fisheries research" is also defined broadly for the purposes of this paper. It means the collection of any biological, economic, or social information which is relevant to fisheries management.

The Report Of The Southern Western Australian Shark Working Group., P. Millington
The Report Of The Southern Western Australian Shark Working Group., P. Millington
Fisheries management papers
The southern Western Australian Shark Working Group was formed to investigate the southern shark fishery and advise the Minister for Fisheries on options for future management. Membership comprised six fishermen from regional professional fishermen's associations and two Fisheries Department officers. The Working Group considered that each shark fisherman obtaining an entitlement should then be restricted in the length of fishing gear he can use and the number of months he can fish. The individual's time and gear entitlement would be approximately that length of gear being used and time spent fishing in a period shortly before the bench mark date. …

The Effects Of Acid Precipitation On Two Lakes In Southwestern Michigan, Fardin Olyaei
The Effects Of Acid Precipitation On Two Lakes In Southwestern Michigan, Fardin Olyaei
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which acid precipitation contributes acidity and heavy metals to lake environments. Asylum and Bonnie Castle Lakes, both located in the western portion of Kalamazoo County, served as the study sites. Precipitation samples were also taken at a site close to both lakes. Using the Hach Colorimeter, a preliminary study was undertaken to determine concentrations of the major cations (H('+), NH(,4)('+), K('+) and Ca('2+)), and major anions (NO(,3)('-), SO(,4)('2-), and PO(,4)('3-)). The main study dealt with the metal concentrations (Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Pb) in rain/snow water, lakewaters, sediment, …
Urbanization And Environmental Change In The Lynnhaven Estuary, Randal D. Owen
Urbanization And Environmental Change In The Lynnhaven Estuary, Randal D. Owen
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Fishes from the industrialized environs of the Elizabeth River, Virginia were surveyed for external evidence of disease during June through October 1984. A highly significant (p < 0.001) incidence of disease was found in demersal fishes collected by otter trawl from a site in the industrially contaminated Southern Branch compared to a less contaminated Western Branch site. Cataracts, fin erosion and dermal lesions were the most commonly occurring anomalies in the Southern Branch finfish.
Static, solid-phase toxicity tests employing sediment collected from the Southern Branch site resulted in an immediate toxic stress in the spot, Leiostomus xanthurus, which resulted in 100% mortality within 24 hours, compared with no mortalities in control systems. Spot exposed to control, i.e., pollution free, and diluted Southern Branch sediments innoculated with the pathogenic bacterial species, Vibrio anguillarium, developed significant (p ≤ 0.020) cases of fin erosion at a mean total bacterial community density …
