A Digital Archive Of Northern Hemisphere Snow Cover, November 1966 Through December 1980, Kenneth F. Dewey, Richard Heim Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to acquaint the research community with a new data base—a digitized archive of Northern Hemisphere snow cover. Historically, those researchers who needed snow cover data for climatic and atmospheric boundary layer studies have had to rely on the irregularly spaced (and in some regions, sparse) grid of point observations. Northern Hemisphere Weekly Snow and Ice Cover Charts, which are created from analyzed satellite imagery at the National Earth Satellite Service (NESS), have been available on an operational basis since late 1966. Each of these weekly charts for the period November 1966 through December 1980 …

Teaching Vertebrate Pest Control: A Challenge To Wildlife Professionals, Robert M. Timm Jan 1982

Teaching Vertebrate Pest Control: A Challenge To Wildlife Professionals, Robert M. Timm

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Vertebrate pest control deals with wild animals that create health hazards, damage resources, or become a general nuisance. Some people prefer the terms "wildlife damage control" or "animal damage control" because they focus on controlling damage rather than controlling animals. This is an important principle. Vertebrate animals that cause damage often have many positive values. In dealing with these situations our objective should always be to reduce or prevent damage; this does not necessarily require the killing of animals. I use the term "vertebrate pest control" because I believe it is less ambiguous than "damage control." When I call an …

Restoring Natural Conditions In A Boreal Forest Park, Glen F. Cole Jan 1982

Restoring Natural Conditions In A Boreal Forest Park, Glen F. Cole

United States National Park Service: Publications

Voyageurs National Park is located in northern Minnesota (Figure 1). Its northern and eastern boundaries parallel a historic fur trade route that influenced the location of the boundary between the United States and Canada. About two-thirds of the park's 344-square-mile (891 km2) area is land, and the remainder is made up of numerous small and large lakes. The interspersion of forested land, massive rock outcrops and lakes make the park very scenic. It is also somewhat unique because it is the only U.S. park on the mainland in a southern boreal forest region. Isle Royale National Park is …

Management Of Roosevelt Elk Habitat And Harvest, E. E. Starkey, D. S. Decalesta, G. W. Witmer Jan 1982

Management Of Roosevelt Elk Habitat And Harvest, E. E. Starkey, D. S. Decalesta, G. W. Witmer

United States National Park Service: Publications

Historically, Roosevelt elk (Cervus elaphus roosevelti) were distributed from northern California to southern British Columbia in the coastal Pacific Northwest. During the Pleistocene, the subspecies was isolated reproductively from the Rocky Mountain elk (C. e. nelsoni) to the east by the Cascade Mountain Range and by glaciation (Guthrie 1966). Thus Roosevelt elk have adapted to relatively moist forest habitats with maritime climates, while Rocky Mountain elk evolved under the continental climate of the interior.
Unfortunately, less is known of Roosevelt elk biology than of the closely related Rocky Mountain elk east of the Cascades. This has …

A Multiobjective Branch-And-Bound Method For Planning Wastewater And Residual Management Systems, Masahisa Nakamura, Suraj M. Alexander, James M. Riley, Robert Simon, Susan Meyer, Kenneth F. Bloemer

KWRRI Research Reports

A multiobjective branch-and-bound algorithm is proposed for use in analysing multiobjective fixed-charge network-flow problems which are found commonly in water resources planning situations. Also proposed is a multiobjective imputed value analysis which makes use of the branch-and-bound tree structure and allows the comparison of the importance of facilities in the network as represented by individual arcs or sets of arcs. The mathematical formulation and the analysis procedure of the method are described, and the potential usefulness of the method is demonstrated using two hypothetical example problems dealing with regional wastewater treatment and residual management systems. A FORTRAN program for implementing …

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This study is a component of a more comprehensive investigation at the Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory, (MERL), University of Rhode Island, that was undertaken in order to assess the potential for eutrophication in both its meanings as a natural and man-induced process occurring in the upper portions of Narragansett Bay and its watershed. This assessment required identification and quantification of the various inputs in order to establish the annual loading and eventual effects of the four important nutrients; ammonia, nitrate-nitrite, silicate and phosphate.

Delimitatin Of The Seaward Extent Of United States Jurisdiction Over The Mineral Resources Of Its Continental Shelf, Therese Anne Landry Jan 1982

Delimitatin Of The Seaward Extent Of United States Jurisdiction Over The Mineral Resources Of Its Continental Shelf, Therese Anne Landry

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This thesis provides a seaward delimitation of United States jurisdiction over the mineral resources of its continental shelf. It does not set lateral maritime boundaries between the United States and its neighbors. Despite the abundance of literature regarding the continental shelf concept, United States shelf limits have not been demarcated in any precise detail. In order to encourage efficient utilization of offshore mineral resources and to avoid unnecessary legal problems, such determination is important. Initially, the conflicting conceptions of the geological and legal continental shelf are discussed. The evolution of the continental shelf as both a physical feature of the …

A Methodology For Siting Coal Fired Thermoelectric Generating Facilities In Puerto Rico, David J. Mcmahon Ii

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In the past, energy facilities on the Island of Puerto Rico have not been located in the best practicable sites. This is attributable to the absence of mandatory site selection procedures. This thesis has developed and tested procedures for siting 900 MWe coal fired thermoelectric generation plants. The procedures developed here permit the placement of these facilities within the existing legal regime, with a minimum of adverse ecological and socioeconomic impact. The process has been designed to consider the entire Island of Puerto Rico for the suitability of siting a 900 MWe coal fired facility. This is accomplished through the …

Great Blue Heron Nesting Biology And Habitat Use On The James River In South Dakota, Eileen M. Dowd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breeding biology, nest site activities, and habitat use of great blue herons (Ardea herodias) nesting in the Glendale heronry, South Dakota, were investigated in 1980 and 1981. Mean brood size was 3.35 nestlings. The predicted number of feeding trips of adult birds peaked when nestlings were 29 days old. A significant amount of variance in adult feeding trips per hour was accounted for by southerly winds and the time period from 1800-2100 hours. The variables that were not significantly related to the number of feeding trips were temperature, wind speed, wind directions other than south, cloud cover, and the 4 …

Hydrologic Series Generation From The Spectral Density Function, Ronand V. Canfield Jan 1982

Hydrologic Series Generation From The Spectral Density Function, Ronand V. Canfield

Reports

Computer simulation of hydrologic processes has become an effective analytical tool for analysis of complicated water resource systems. Present methods of generating sequences place practical limits on the ability of the methods to preserve an observed autocorrelation structure. This report explores the use of spectral characteristics in the generation of time series. Because of the correspondence between the spectral density function and the autocorrelation function of a time series, the spectrum can be used to fit any of the empirical autocorrelation structures observed in hydrologic sequences. The problem of maintaining an observed correlation structure in a generated sequence is reduced …
