An Objective Forecast Method Developed For Lake Ontario Induced Snowfall Systems, K. F. Dewey
An Objective Forecast Method Developed For Lake Ontario Induced Snowfall Systems, K. F. Dewey
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
A research effort was initiated in 1976 to develop an objective lake-effect snowfall forecast model for each of the Great Lakes. It is the purpose of this paper to present the development and evaluation of the forecast method which was created for the Lake Ontario induced snowfall systems. All Lake Ontario lake-effect days were identified for a 10-year period prior to the 1976 snowfall season. Upper air and surface observations were combined with overlake data for these lake-effect periods. The dominant predictors were derived through the diagnostic ability of stepwise multiple discriminant analysis. The final product of this research effort …

Planting Trees-Why Rather Than How, Angelo Cohn
Planting Trees-Why Rather Than How, Angelo Cohn
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Three evergreen plantings over 25 years in a private woodland are described and evaluated in terms of reforestation, economics and personal satisfaction. Credit is given to government foresters and support from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DN\R) and the federal Forest Incentives Program (FIP). Changes in site preparation methods, selection of species and planting procedures are discussed as outcomes of research and field experience. Cost-benefits are assigned principally to human values reflected in family learning and enhanced appreciation of the ecosystem of rural Minnesota.

A Program To Re-Establish And Study Prairie Grassland And Assess Effect Of Fire, Lee W. Eberley, Keith H. Dueholm
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Two plots in southeastern Minnesota were seeded with several species of prairie vegetation . Grasses native to the prairie proliferated, while some foreign species failed to survive. Fire was used on one plot to stimulate the native species and reduce competition from cool-season grasses. Additional planting of forbs will be attempted to increase species diversity on the plots. Burning also will be continued to determine the effect of fire on the vegetation.
Critical Areas Planning In Minnesota, Clifton J. Aichinger
Critical Areas Planning In Minnesota, Clifton J. Aichinger
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The Critical Areas Planning Program was established by Minnesota legislation in 1973. Its primary work is with local units of government, regional or state agencies located within areas possessing significant natural, scientific, cultural or historical resources to develop consistent plans and regulations for area use and management. Local units of government prepare the plans and regulations according to guidelines approved by the governor for each critical area'. with technical and financial assistance from the Environmental Quality Board (EQB). The enabling act directed the EQB to develop an inventory of potential critical areas in the state. Inventory methods were evaluated. The …

Turbulence Spectra Above A Vegetated Surface Under Conditions Of Sensible Heat Advection, Raymond P. Motha, Shashi B. Verma, Norman J. Rosenberg
Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Spectra of vertical and horizontal velocity, air temperature and humidity fluctuations were analyzed from measurements made over a well-watered alfalfa crop under conditions of sensible heat advection. Vertical velocity and air temperature spectra as well as cospectra of momentum, sensible heat and water vapor were found to be dependent on atmospheric thermal stratification. These spectra and cospectra were shifted toward higher frequencies under advective as compared to lapse conditions. These results indicate that the predominant eddy sizes are relatively smaller under advective conditions. Humidity spectra, on the other hand, were independent of daytime thermal stratification conditions but were influenced by …

Modelling The Influence Of Eutrophication On The Coldwater Fishery Habitat Of Lake Mcconaughy, A "Two-Story" Reservoir, Melvin W. Taylor
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
The lifespan of the existing coldwater habitat in Lake McConaughy is unknown, To promulgate effective management and regulatory strategies, a method of predicting this lifespan was needed, Ideally, this procedure should also provide potential management philosophies that would retard eutrophication, The LAKSCI computerized simulation model of Systems Control, Inc, was modified to assist in solving this problem, Data for model input were collected from August 1976 to August 1978. When calibrated the model proved satisfactory for predicting water level and temperatures, but unsatisfactory in prediction of water chemistry without additional data and refinement,

Niobrara-Missouri River Fishery Investigations, Larry W. Hesse, Gene Zeurlein, Roger Vancil, Leonard Koziol, Brad Newcomb, Leigh Ann Retelsdorf
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
The Niobrara River heads in the table lands of eastern Wyoming and flows 786 kilometers (km) eastward across Nebraska joining the Missouri River near the town of Niobrara, Nebraska. The Niobrara is the largest Missouri River tributary between the last two mainstem impoundments (Lake Francis Case and Lewis and Clark Lake). Fish movement up the Niobrara is prevented by Nebraska Public Power District's (NPPD's) Spencer Hydroelectric Dam, 63.3 km upstream from the river mouth. The lower reach of the river is turbid and carries a considerable load of sand, silt, and organic debris into the Missouri River. The mean annual …
Uranium Transport In The Walker River Basin, California And Nevada, Larry Benson, D. L. Leach
Uranium Transport In The Walker River Basin, California And Nevada, Larry Benson, D. L. Leach
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
During the summer of 1976 waters from tributaries, rivers, springs and wells were sampled in the Walker River Basin. Snow and sediments from selected sites were also sampled. All samples were analyzed for uranium and other elements. The resulting data provide an understanding of the transport of uranium within a closed hydrologic basin as well as providing a basis for the design of geochemical reconnaissance studies for the Basin and Range Province of the Western United States. Spring and tributary data are useful in locating areas containing anomalous concentrations of uranium. However, agricultural practices obscure the presence of known uranium …
Habitat Preferences And Censusing Of Waterfowl Broods On Stock Ponds In South Central South Dakota, Mark A. Rumble
Habitat Preferences And Censusing Of Waterfowl Broods On Stock Ponds In South Central South Dakota, Mark A. Rumble
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Waterfowl broods on stock ponds in south central South Dakota were surveyed in 1977 and 1978 to compare flush and observation techniques for censusing broods and to determine waterfowl brood habitat preferences. Results indicated that 72-8% of the broods present were censused by either technique alone. No differences were indicated between the 2 techniques when analyzed by species. For total brood counts, a significant (P<0.05) difference was indicated for 1 of the 4 sample periods. Differences were found between the 2 techniques for certain age-classes of species and age-classes overall. Visibility correction factors were calculated for each species based on the percentage of known broods censused by each technique. Brood habitat preferences were examined using multiple regression and discriminant analyses of 33 pond and upland variables. Ponds were selected in a limited size range (0.71-2, 70 ha) to reduce variation in numbers of broods per pond due to pond size. However, variables indicative of pond size were significantly and positively associated to brood use of ponds in 8 of 9 analyses. Potential brood escape cover such as Polygonum spp. and Eleocharis spp. were positively associated with mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), (A. strepera), northern shoveler (A. clypeata) and class 1 broods. Large differences in numbers of broods on study ponds between the 2 years were likely due to increased nesting cover provided by yellow sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis). Study ponds with higher pH and more submersed aquatic vegetation had more brood use.

Olympic National Park (ONP), a natural area 15% larger than Rhode Island, located on the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington State, is a land of diverse contrasts and impressive beauty. It is also a land rich in natural resources (e.g. timber, water power, and recreational potential) that are strongly coveted by man. This dichotomy has led to a number of conflicts during the past hundred years over the policies directing the control, management, and use of this area. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the factors that have shaped that policy and to follow the changes that …

Management Of Antarctic Krill, Paul Setliff
Management Of Antarctic Krill, Paul Setliff
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This study pertains to the problem of international activity in an area of political and ecological sensitivity, the Southern Ocean. Of specific concern is the question of which group of states should have a voice in management of Antarctic krill. The niche filled by krill within the ecosystem and its potential as a fishery is discussed. Past international practice has been affected for the most part by the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 which has maintained a somewhat exclusive "club" of nations as the overseers of Antarctic activity. However, states not party to the 1959 Treaty are becoming interested in the …
State Government And Ocs Policy: An Analysis Of The Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act And The Amendments Of 1978, Bruce Vild
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
An Energy Research and Development Administration report indicates that the United States is increasing its dependence on oil from the countries that participated in the 1973 oil embargo. Given the volatile situation in the Middle East at this writing, the Carter Administration's peace initiatives notwithstanding, this seems an imprudent policy. And, at a time when "Project Independence" is a recent memory, there is a great deal of irony in increased importation. It seems in the Nation's best interest to reverse that trend. Natural gas is also in demand, of course, especially in the Northeast during the winter. The best solution …
A Preliminary Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Proposed St. Thomas-St. John Sand Mining Project, Random Dubois
A Preliminary Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Proposed St. Thomas-St. John Sand Mining Project, Random Dubois
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
A territorial ban on beach and sand removal in the U. S. Virgin Islands has resulted in a search for alternative sources. Insecure extra-territorial reserves and high shipping costs have made sand importation prohibitive. Recent surveys conducted in 1977 by the U. S. Geological Survey identified several nearshore sources of aggregate adjacent to the island of St. Thomas. In a 1978 workshop jointly conducted by the Government of the Virgin Islands and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration various alternatives were presented for sand extraction. Two alternatives are examined using a cost benefit approach.
Potential Use Of Hydroelectric Facilities For Manipulating The Fertility Of Lake Mead, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, James E. Deacon
Potential Use Of Hydroelectric Facilities For Manipulating The Fertility Of Lake Mead, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, James E. Deacon
Publications (WR)
Analysis of historical nutrient data for Lake Mead indicates that the fertility of the reservoir has decreased which may be the cause for a corresponding decline in the largemouth bass population. However, it appears that fertility can be manipulated by altering the operation of the dam. The depletion of nutrients in the euphotic zone by phytoplankton and subsequent accumulation in the hypolimnion during summer and fall provide a natural nutrient gradient from which water of varying fertility can be drawn for discharge. This combined with alterations in the depth or seasonal pattern of discharge can possibly be used to enhance …
Special Reflectance Of Hydrophytes, Robert G. Best
Special Reflectance Of Hydrophytes, Robert G. Best
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Identification of hydrophytes will improve the delineation and classification of wetlands on remotely sensed imagery. Spectral reflectance measurements of 10 species of hydrophytes were made with an Exotach radiometer during three phenological stages, flowering and early seed, senescence, and early emergent. Reflectance data were analyzed to determine significant (≥.95) reflectance differences between species in each of four spectral regions during each phenological stage. Eight species had significantly (≥.95) different reflectances during the flower and early seed stage. Only one species could not be spectrally separated during at least one phenological stage. The results indicate that films sensitive to both visible …

Population And Productivity Of A Flock Of Giant Canada Geese In Northeastern South Dakota, Ted A. Clausing
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Population and productivity studies of giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) were conducted in northeastern South Dakota in 1976 and 1977. One hundred ninety-three of 436 randomly selected sample quarter sections on the 5,459 km2 area contained potential goose nesting habitat in 1976. Forty-six pairs, 6 indicated pairs, and 6 single geese were found on these 193 quarter sections during the 1977 nesting season. The population was estimated to be 1,880 geese. Recommendations were to continue aerial surveys in the spring and late summer and to supplement them with annual searches of the sample quarter sections used in this study. …

Breeding Waterfowl Use Of Intermittent Streams, Mchenry County, North Dakota, Daniel E. Hubbard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thirty-three 425 m segments of 4 intermittent streams in north central North Dakota were censured for breeding pairs of waterfowl in 1977 and 1978. Pair count data were available for 1976. Emphasis of this study was placed on the narrow meandering portions of the streams. High dabbling duck (Anas spp.) densities were observed in 1977 and 1978; 6.11 pairs per ha and 5.60 pairs per ha, respectively, for the first census of each year. Accepting blue-winged teal (A. discors), numbers of dabbler pairs were similar in 1976 and 1978. Dry conditions in 1977 caused lower numbers of all species of …

Expectation Of Genetic Alteration Of Muscle Composition And Growth Traits In Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri), George W. Partelow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The breeding of farm animals to produce superior organisms has been extensively applied to many parts of the world. Much of the research has been concerned with the manip0ulation of muscle protein and fat in muscle tissue for the purpose of catering to human needs (Kielanowski 1972; Dinkel and Busch 1973; Olson et. al. 1976). Though fishes are able to convert food to quality protein more efficiently than most animals, they have been underutilized as a protein source in the United States. Until recently, genetic manipulation through selection to enhance their quality has not been extensively applied (Smith and Rumsey …
