Chemistry Of The Oxidant, Ferrate, Its Interaction With Specific Organics Found In Waste Water, Donald H. Williams, J. T. Riley
Chemistry Of The Oxidant, Ferrate, Its Interaction With Specific Organics Found In Waste Water, Donald H. Williams, J. T. Riley
KWRRI Research Reports
It became obvious during this investigation that while much work has been done with ferrate (VI) chemistry, discrepancies existed in the literature and very little attention had been given possible engineering uses. This work attempted to fulfill these two needs in an exploratory manner.
The preparative techniques were reviewed and mechanical improvements made in one which allowed improved yields. Essentially what was done was to enlarge and improve the filtering technique of the product and use cooler temperatures throughout the preparation. This greatly shortened the time required. Then it was learned that the addition of ethyl alcohol to the final …

KWRRI Research Reports
Limestone groundwater flows mainly in openings it has solutionally enlarged, thus an understanding of the water's state of saturation relative to calcite (the principal mineral component of limestone) is fundamental to an understanding of the nature and evolution of the limestone aquifer. This study investigated the Mammoth Cave-Sinkhole Plain (MCSP) and Cave Hollow (CH) aquifers in Kentucky, both in Missippian limestones.
Both aquifers were always undersaturated with calcite. Except for completely ventilated vadose flows (usually) and some vadose seepage (occasionally), all recharges sampled (sinking streams, vadose flows, and vadose seepage) were also undersaturated. The lack of saturation in the MCSP …
Trace Metal Analysis Of Barren River And Nolin River Reservoirs By Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Mary Jo Kennedy
Trace Metal Analysis Of Barren River And Nolin River Reservoirs By Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Mary Jo Kennedy
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This research was part of a project underway at Barren River and Nolin River Reservoirs in south-central Kentucky. The research was partially supported by a grant through the Sport Fishing Institute, Washington, D.C.
The study reported herein was concerned with the analysis of trace metal concentrations in the two reservoirs. It is believed that the fish population may in part depend upon the trace metals present in the water. It is anticipated that the data presented in this paper will eventually be correlated with the biology studies of the reservoirs being carried out by the Department of Biology of Western …

Technical Bulletins
1. Soil Survey of Owingup Swamp
2. Comparison of Owingup and Grasmere Swamps
The two swamps, Owingup and Grasmere, shown on the location map are practically identical with regard to soil conditions. Grasmere Swamp however has been cleared and used for agriculture for some 60 years while Owingup Swamp is as yet unalienated. Soils on both swamps consist of mainly organic diatomaceous clay. The survey reported here was aimed at assessing the agricultural potential of Owingup Swamp in the light of experience gained since the clearing of Grasmere Swamp. Findings of the survey indicate that some 2000 acres at Owingup …
Subsurface Irrigation Research In Arkansas, John P. Hoskyn, Billy B. Bryan
Subsurface Irrigation Research In Arkansas, John P. Hoskyn, Billy B. Bryan
Technical Reports
A pilot study conducted in 1963 indicated that (1) cotton yields could be increased by subirrigation, (2) drilled orifices were unsatisfactory because of internal plugging caused by burrs and drilling particles, and (3) operating pressures of 5 and 10 psi were excessive, and 5 psi probably should be considered as an upper-limit pressure. A greenhouse study of a subirrigation system indicated that 2 psi should, in general, for in-wall orifices, be considered as a lower-limit pressure when orifices are built into the pipe wall. The greenhouse study also indicated that a placement depth of 12 inches was preferable to 18 …

Taxonomy Of The Common Dolphins Of The Eastern Pacific Ocean, Richard C. Banks, Robert L. Brownell Jr.
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Delphinus bairdii Dall is a species of dolphin distinct from D. delphis Linnaeus, with which it has usually been synonymized. D. bairdii has a longer rostrum relative to the zygomatic width of the skull; the ratio of these measurements falls at 1.55 or above for bairdii and 1.53 and below for delphis. In the eastern Pacific Ocean, D. bairdii is found in the Gulf of California and along the west coast of Baja California, Mexico; D. delphis is presently found in the waters off California. Until approximately the beginning of the present century, bairdii occurred farther north in the …
Land Use Changes And Sharp-Tailed Grouse Breeding Behavior, Leonard H. Sisson
Land Use Changes And Sharp-Tailed Grouse Breeding Behavior, Leonard H. Sisson
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
The sharp-tailed grouse formerly inhabited much of the area which is now Nebraska. The sharp-tailed, along with its near relative, the greater prairie chicken, disappeared from parts of its former range which were put into intense cultivation. The 20,000 square mile area of the Sandhills were not suited to such cultivation and consequently is the remaining stronghold of the sharp-tailed in Nebraska. It is one of the more important sharp-tail ranges remaining in the United States.
With continuing decreases in suitable sharp-tail habitat throughout its former range in the United States, it is important to understand land use trends and …

This has occurred under normal seasonal conditions and observations in this article are not related to unusual conditions such as the extremely low rainfall during the current season.*
Shed Lambing In The Esperance Environment, T Marshall, F. F. Dixon
Shed Lambing In The Esperance Environment, T Marshall, F. F. Dixon
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Neonatal lamb mortality is often high in Western Australia and losses as high as 33 per cent, have been recorded on private properties in the Esperance area. Surveys by Western Australian Department of Agriculture officers have indicated that more than threequarters of such lamb deaths occur after birth. About half these deaths result from the combined effects of weather and mismothering.
Work in Victoria has indicated that lamb mortality may be reduced by intensive lambing systems such as shedding and this trial was established to see if shedding could reduce lamb mortality in the Esperance environment.

In this article the functions of sulphur, deficiency symptoms and potential problem soils are described.
Current recommendations and plans for future research work are outlined.
Water Storage Has Not Kept Pace With Stock Numbers : South Stirling Survey Finding, A L. Prout
Water Storage Has Not Kept Pace With Stock Numbers : South Stirling Survey Finding, A L. Prout
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
RESULTS of a survey on water storage capacity in the South Stirlings area indicate that farm water storage has not kept pace with increased clearing and stock numbers.
This has resulted in many farmers requesting advice on water conservation projects following two consecutive years of low rainfall runoff.

Wildflowers Of The Stirling Range, Alexander S. George
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
TWO hundred miles south-east of Perth, the Stirling Range rises abruptly from the surrounding plain. About forty miles long, it is a line of semi-isolated hills, rather than a continuous block.
There are many intriguing plants of diverse colour and form. Well over 400 species are known from the Range. A number of these are found no-where else, and some are restricted to one mountain.
An Evaluation Of The Roadside Technique For Censusing Breeding Waterfowl, Darrel W. Sauder
An Evaluation Of The Roadside Technique For Censusing Breeding Waterfowl, Darrel W. Sauder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An evaluation of the roadside technique for censusing breeding waterfowl was conducted in east-central South Dakota. On the 54-mile transect used in 1968, number of coutns necessary to be within 20 percent of population mean with specified confidence of 0.90 for blue-winged teal (Anas discors) and gadwall (Anas strepera) was five and three using miles or wetlands. Within same limits counts needed for mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) were at least four for miles and three for wetlands. Shorter transects, used in 1967 required more counts. Transects 21 miles long required up to 10 counts based on miles and 11 based on …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Food habits of bigmouth buffalo fry, subadults, and adults were studied in lake Poinsett, South Dakota, from January to November, 1968. Fifty-six fry fed primarily (75.0% by volume) on benthic organisms. Four hundred fifty-five subadults and adults fed entirely on plankton. Daphnia pulex adults comprised 83.7 to 96.7% of the food items during periods of ice cover (January to April). Daphnia pulex adults and juveniles comprised 68.5% by volume and cyclopoid copepods 29.7%^ of the diet from April to July. Summer (July to October) samples showed ingestion of D. pulex adults and juveniles (36.9%), Anacystis sp. (22.3%), and Daphnia galeata …
The Effect Of A Large Reservoir On Local Government Revenue And Expenditure, Clyde T. Bates
The Effect Of A Large Reservoir On Local Government Revenue And Expenditure, Clyde T. Bates
KWRRI Research Reports
Development of a large multi-purpose reservoir within the area of their jurisdiction may affect property ta.x revenue and expenditure of county governments and school districts. Privately owned land sold to a federally sponsored reservoir is not subject to property taxes because of the doctrine of intergovernmental immunity. Local officials often assume that this loss of assessment will reduce their tax revenue and thereby their fiscal ability to provide an acceptable level of government services. They may also expect the influx of construction workers or the disruption of existing facilities to increase the cost of providing these services. The study approaches …
Water Quality Changes Under Ice Cover In Northern Prairie Lakes, Steven P. Gloss
Water Quality Changes Under Ice Cover In Northern Prairie Lakes, Steven P. Gloss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Water quality changes under ice cover were studied in seven northern prairie lakes. The lakes are high in dissolved materials and exist essentially as closed systems during the winter months. Ice cover ranging from 53 to 86 cm developed on the lakes. Melted ice samples showed small amounts of dissolved impurities present in surface layers of the ice. No substantial concentrations of any ions were found in the ice of lower layers. Specific conductance increased over 40% under ice cover in two of the lakes studied. Increases in other lakes ranged from 19 to 38%. Major ions showed increases similar …
Patterns Of Land Use Change Around A Large Reservoir, Billy R. Prebble
Patterns Of Land Use Change Around A Large Reservoir, Billy R. Prebble
KWRRI Research Reports
Reservoirs are built to control floods, provide water for irrigation and municipal supply, generate electric power, augment low flows for navigation and water quality control, and provide improved fishing and recreation opportunity. A reservoir is justified if the benefit it provides to society exceeds the cost to develop it. Much research has been done to determine the benefit of a water resources development to society as a whole. Some research has explored the benefit of such a facility to a region. Very little research exists on the effects of a reservoir on the immediately surrounding area.
It seems reasonable that …
Economic Development Of Areas Contiguous To Multipurpose Reservoirs: The Kentucky-Tennessee Experience, Michael B. Hargrove
Economic Development Of Areas Contiguous To Multipurpose Reservoirs: The Kentucky-Tennessee Experience, Michael B. Hargrove
KWRRI Research Reports
This study analyzes the effects of multi-purpose reservoir projects on the economic development of areas contiguous to the dam and reservoir. The study concentrates on the development potential in a humid region where the provision of agricultural water is not critical to the economy. Can a reservoir project be a major part of a development program for a local area? How can the favorable effects of the project on the contiguous area be increased? These questions are answered by this study.
The study is divided into three major phases. The first phase is a theoretical analysis of the determinants of …
