Some Effects Of Fluctuating And Falling Water Levels On Waterfowl Production, Kenneth E. Wolf May 1952

Some Effects Of Fluctuating And Falling Water Levels On Waterfowl Production, Kenneth E. Wolf

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There are today many areas and types of water storage. The uses to which these are put are many, and the prospect for the future can only be that there will be an increase in the number of these reservoirs. These areas are usually operated with regard only for power production, irrigation, or storage, but there is a growing concern about the effects on wildlife which this type of operation may have. Fluctuating water levels, and falling water levels are not restricted to man-made impoundments tut are characteristic of many of then. Biologists have observed that these variations in water …

Audio Census Of Some Wisconsin Game Birds, Donald R. Thompson, Charles W. Lemke Jan 1952

Audio Census Of Some Wisconsin Game Birds, Donald R. Thompson, Charles W. Lemke

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Audio censuses of Wisconsin game birds were commenced in 1948, and now include the bobwhite quail, the pheasant and the ruffed grouse, in the order in which censuses were introduced.

Briefly, audio censuses are based on the characteristic sounds given by the male of the species concerned during the breeding season. An observer strategically located at a station, or stations in the field tallies the number of individuals calling, and/or the number of calls heard during a given time period.

In Wisconsin, only the transect method is used, with the observer following a given route and making listening stops of …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study of the Utah sculpin in Logan River was based on 801 specimens collected during 1949 to March 1951. Numbers of fish examined for various catagories of the study wares length-frequency, 495; aging by vertebrae, 407; length-weight relationship, 601; and food habits, 275.

Fish were collected by use of an electric shocking machine generating 600 watts and 220 volts. Numbers of fish occurred as high as 150 per tenth mile of stream. Preferred habitats occurred in areas of coarse gravel and small rocks.

Vertebrae dissected from the fish were used in age determination. Length-frequency proved to be a general …

Pellet Seeding On Sagebrush Range, Gordon E. Gatherum May 1951

Pellet Seeding On Sagebrush Range, Gordon E. Gatherum

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Seeding deteriorated range lands efficiently and economically has become one of the most promising means of improving the agricultural economy of the western range states. By providing the most rapid means of increasing the quantity and improving the quality of forage for livestock, and aiding in the prevention of soil erosion, artificial seeding contributes directly to the stability of agriculture.

Although many successful methods of artificial revegetation have been developed by experience and through research, there is still a great need for refinement in techniques to insure better overall success and greater economy of operation. Improper methods often result in …
