Coal Geology & Exploration

Influence by the acquisition environments and instrument performance, missing signals and destructed channels are inevitable in measured ground-penetrating radar (GPR) profiles. They can cause event discontinuity of reflected and diffracted waves generated by targets, severely impairing the accuracy and resolution of subsequent processing and imaging. Hence, by combining the projection onto convex sets (POCS) algorithm extensively used in image processing with the curvelet transform exhibiting high sparsity, this study proposed a high-accuracy reconstruction method for missing GPR signals based on curvelet-domain POCS. Building on the compressive sensing theory, the objective function for missing signal reconstruction based on discrete curvelet transform …

Genetic variation in Arctic species is often influenced by vicariance during the Pleistocene, as ice sheets fragmented the landscape and displaced populations to low-and high-latitude refugia. The formation of secondary contact or suture zones during periods of ice sheet retraction has important consequences on genetic diversity by facilitating genetic connectivity between formerly isolated populations. Brant geese (Branta bernicla) are a maritime migratory waterfowl (Anseriformes) species that almost exclusively uses coastal habitats. Within North America, brant geese are characterized by two phenotypically distinct subspecies that utilize disjunct breeding and wintering areas in the northern Pacific and Atlantic. In the …

Floodplain Restoration And Its Effects On Summer Water Temperature And Macroinvertebrates In Whychus Creek, Oregon (Usa), Wesley N. Noone, Patrick M. Edwards, Yangdong Pan, Colin R. Thorne

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Stream restoration is a proposed climate adaptation tool; however, outcomes of floodplain restoration on stream temperature have been debated. Despite a growing number of studies that investigated water temperature in restored streams, few have quantified temperature variations in new habitat types created by restored hydrogeomorphic processes to explore the effects on aquatic macroinvertebrates. We evaluated the hypotheses: (1) restoration increases habitat diversity, (2) habitat diversity increases water temperature variability, and (3) restoration increases the diversity of macroinvertebrate assemblage and temperature associations. In August 2021, we collected environmental data to describe the aquatic habitats, water temperature and quality (continuous and discrete), …

Dissolved Nitrogen Removal In Biochar Amended, High Permeability Media For Urban Stormwater Treatment, Mark Vicciardo Mar 2024

Dissolved Nitrogen Removal In Biochar Amended, High Permeability Media For Urban Stormwater Treatment, Mark Vicciardo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nutrient pollution in stormwater drives the eutrophication of inland and costal waterbodies which leads to sea grass retreat and the proliferation of harmful algal blooms (HAB). These anthropogenic effects destabilize ecosystems, and some HABs can pose direct human health risk. Bioretention, or the storage and controlled discharge of stormwater run-off in an ecologically engineered setting, is a potential solution to this problem. However, it relies heavily on the settling of particles as a nutrient removal mechanism, and thus struggles with pollutants, such as dissolved nitrogen, which is a particular problem in Florida where the geological prominence of phosphorus leaves nitrogen …
