Biomarker Geochemistry Of The Miocene Monterey Formation, West San Joaquin Basin, California: Implications For Petroleum Generation, Michael A. Kruge

Much of the Miocene Monterey Formation of California is rich in biogenic sediment, especially organic matter and silica. Because of the geologic structure, the Monterey in the subsurface near Lost Hills in the San Joaquin Basin forms a natural laboratory for the study of the diagenetic responses of these materials. Rocks of similar age and lithology are buried to depths ranging between 500 and 3500 m, and are thus exposed to a temperature range of 45–130°C. The diagenetic progression of silica from opal-A to opal-CT to microquartz is well-documented in Monterey burial history studies. However, diagenetic indicators need to be …

Beginning about 12,500 years B.P., Lake Lahontan began to decline (fig. 1: Black Rock Desert data from Davis [1983]; Truckee River Delta data from Born [1972]; tufa data from Benson [1981]; packrat-midden data from Thompson and others [1985]) . As water levels declined, their altitudes fell below sill altitudes (table 1); locations of these sills are shown in figure 2. Today, five surface-water bodies (Black Rock Playa, Humboldt-Carson Sink, Walker Lake, Pyramid Lake, Honey Lake) exist in four of the seven subbasins (fig. 2).

Petrologic and faunal study of a 72.5m continuous corehole drilled in southeastern North Carolina has provided an opportunity to study a relatively uninterrupted vertical sequence across the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary. The following stratographic sequence occurs; upper middle Maastrichtian Peedee Formation, –65.8m to –51.8m below sea-level (BMSL), upper middle Maastrichtian Rocky Point Member of the Peedee Formation, –51.8m to –27.4m BMSL, and middle to upper (?) Eocene Castle Hayne Limestone, –27.4m to 15.2m BMSL (base of casing).

The Peedee Formation consists of moderately indurated, very fine to fine, sandy foraminiferal biomicrite and sandy biomicrite. Silt-size zoned dolomite rhombohedra form up to 30% …

The Virginia Division of Mineral Resources and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science jointly made three cruises over the Virginia continental shelf in April and July of 1985 to sample known heavy-mineral sites for minerals of potential economic and/or strategic value. In addition to sampling, side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiling surveys were performed at a site off Smith Island. At the Smith Island site, as many as four acoustic horizons were detected within the upper 6 meters of sediment. Interconnected Reproductive And Vegetative Remains Of Populus (Salicaceae) From The Middle Eocene Green River Formation, Northeastern Utah, William D. Tidwell, Steven R. Manchester, David L. Dilcher

A new specimen from the Middle Eocene Evacuation Creek Member of the Green River Formation in northeastern Utah shows a twig with several leaves of Populus wilmattae Crockrell and a fruiting raceme attache. This specimen establishes for the first time the type of fruits borne by P. wilmattae and provides additional characters with which to assess its taxonomic and evolutionary status. An associated seed shows attached placental hairs like those of extant species of Populus. The Green River fossil differs from extant Populus species in having basically palmate leaf venation and in bearing its fruiting axis on a young twig. …

During 1979-84, 35 wells completed in the principal aquifer in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah, that had been sampled during 1962-67 were resampled to determine if water-quality changes had occurred. The dissolved-solids concentration of the water from 13 of the wells has increased by more than 10 percent since 1962-67.

In mid-April, 1983, an old landslide near Thistle, Utah, began to move, and within days had blocked Spanish Fork Canyon. As the slide's movement continued, construction crews gradually converted the toe of the slide into an earth-filled dam--Thistle dam--that impounded northwest-flowing Spanish Fork River. The resultant reservoir, known as Thistle Lake, was subsequently drained because of uncertainty about the stability of the dam. Recently, officials of Utah County have explored various alternatives for a water-retention structure in the area, including utilization of Thistle dam. Dominant bedrock units of the Deer Peaks area, northwestern Washington, include the Shuksan Metamorphic Suite, the Deer Peaks unit, the Chuckanut Formation, the Oso volcanic rocks and the Granite Lake Stock. Rocks of the Shuksan Metamorphic Suite (SMS) exhibit a stratigraphy of meta-basalt, iron/manganese schist, and carbonaceous phyllite. The shear sense of stretching lineations in the SMS indicates that during high pressure metamorphism the subduction zone dipped to the northeast relative to the present position of the rocks. Evidence derived from18late prehistoric (middle and late Woodland Period) archeological sites, from several early historical accounts, and from the current understanding of the distribution of Virginia mammals indicates that the large mammal fauna of the Commonwealth has not changed substantially within the past 4,000 yrs. Some species (e.g., bison, elk, timber wolf, and mountain lion) have been extirpated since the settlement of Virginia by Europeans; some previously extirpated species (e.g., porcupine, coyote, and beaver) have been naturally or artificially reintroduced during the historical period, and others (e.g., woodchuck and red fox) probably have expanded their distributions as a result of …

The Sedimentary Processes And Geomorphic History Of Wreck Shoal, An Oyster Reef Of The James River, Virginia, Joseph T. Dealteris

Wreck Shoal is a subtidal oyster reef area located in the James River, Virginia. Two significantly different types of oyster reefs are found in adjacent areas on Wreck Shoal. Hard-rock reefs are characterized by a relatively thick oyster shell layer, higher densities of live oysters, a coarser interstitial sediment, and a negligible sediment cover. In contrast, mud-shell reefs are characterized by a very thin osyter shell layer, considerably lower densities of live oysters, a finer interstitial sediment, and a 1-2 cm layer of very fine sediments covering the reef. The Late Quaternary Evolution Of A Twin Barrier-Island Complex, Cape Charles, Virginia (Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, Wisconsinan, Sea-Level Highstand), Kenneth. Finkelstein

A total of 68 vibra-cores and 14-box cores in conjunction with high-resolution seismic records are used to describe the late Quaternary development of a twin-barrier island complex. Based on the stratigraphy, radiocarbon dates, and microfossils, a transgressive outer Holocene and inner Pleistocene barrier island complex are recognized. The two subaerial sub-parallel barriers are a result of separate marine transgressions that occurred before and after late Wisconsin glaciation. Pollen assemblages and ten radiocarbon dates from the lagoonal sediments below the older island concur on a date of approximately 30,000 years B.P., hence a probable mid-Wisconsinan age for the overriding barrier island. …

The Grandy Ridge-Lake Shannon area contains four major lithologic units: the Chilliwack Group, the Yellow Aster Complex, and the informally named "chert/basalt" and "Triassic dacite" units. The units are juxtaposed along anastomosing low angle faults of Late Cretaceous age. Additional deformation took place at a more recent time.

Lithologies of the Chilliwack Group predominate in the study area, with fine-grained sedimentary rocks of the lower clastic sequence present at lower elevations in the map area, and relatively mafic volcanic rocks present mostly at higher elevations. Net shore-drift along the north coast of Clallam County, Washington, was determined by using geomorphic and sedimentologic indicators. These indicators include changes in bluff morphology, delta plan form, beach width and slope, sediment size gradation, direction of stream mouth diversion, spit growth, deposition and erosion at drift obstructions, identifiable sediment, relict beach ridges, and imbricated beach sediment.

Irregularities in the coastline have caused the shore drift to become divided into drift cells, each displaying zones of supply, transportation, and accumulation. The Lone Jack group of claims is in the Mt. Baker Mining District, northern Whatcom County, Washington. Three prominent gold-quartz veins are present, two of which were mined and produced 945 kg of gold between 1901 and 1924. Since then mining operations have not been renewed.

The quartz veins are within 3 km of surface exposures of the Miocene Chilliwack Batholith, above and within a zone of deformation related to the mid-Late Cretaceous Shuksan fault. This major Northern Cascades structure has juxtaposed the Upper Mesozoic Carrington Phyl lite over the Paleozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Chilliwack Group. The …

The structural geology of the Mt. Shuksan area is dominated by the Shuksan thrust fault. This fault juxtaposes the mid to late Paleozoic Chilliwack Group with the structurally overlying, early Cretaceous Shuksan Metamorphic Suite. The Shuksan thrust fault is a complex imbricate zone, approximately 1.5 km wide in map view, in which rocks of the Shuksan Suite and Chilliwack Group are imbricated with lesser amounts of exotic tectonic slices. Mesoscopic structures are chaotic and mostly disordered although a dominant shear fabric is pervasive. "The Escalante Silver District, Iron County, Utah, occupies a group of low hills extending to the Escalante Desert from the Black Hills to the south. Tertiary volcanics serve as host rocks for silver bearing quartz veins. Five map units, with a total of 12 members are recognized. X-ray fluorescence and field mapping enabled differentiation of the units, while thin section analysis enabled characterization of the members. The map units formed in three episodes. The oldest is extrusive doming of distinctive older lava and breccia flows. The middle group is made up of tectontic breccias, sillar-like lava flows, and volcaniclastic sediments …

Hyaloclastic sediment forms an identifiable stratigraphic interval within the Troutdale Formation that can be traced from the Bridal Veil channel to the Portland basin. Hyaloclastic sediment composed chiefly vitric sands is found interbedded with muds, sandy muds and gravels penetrated by wells in northeast Portland are correlated with the upper member of the Troutdale Formation. These beds are characteristic of the informal upper member of the Troutdale Formation in the Bridal Veil channel of the ancestral Columbia River (Tolan and Beeson, 1984) and the type area of the Troutdale Formation exposed along the Sandy River (Trimble, 1963). The Vale KGRA is characterized by high heat flow, two to five times higher than the worldwide average, and by numerous hot springs. The hot springs are aligned along faults. This phenomena is typical of a Basin and Range type geothermal system. The hot geothermal fluids migrate upward along the more permeable, fault planes.

The rocks exposed in the Vale area are the Pliocene Chalk Butte formation and the Pleistocene beds of Captain Keeney Pass. Both units are composed of volcaniclastic siltstones, sandstones and conglomerates. The units are differentiated by color, texture and degree of lithification. About 200 meters of …

Approximately 16 km of Columbia River basalt are exposed in the Salmon River area to the south and to the west of Mount Hood, Oregon. A maximum composite basalt section composed of 15 flows and totaling 461 m is exposed in discontinuous areas of outcrop.

The Columbia River basalt in the Salmon River area belongs to the Grande Ronde Basalt and the Frenchman Springs Member of the Wanapum Basalt.
