The Development Of Foliations In Low, Medium And High Grade Metamorphic Tectonites, William J. Gregg Jan 1979

The Development Of Foliations In Low, Medium And High Grade Metamorphic Tectonites, William J. Gregg

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Studies of foliation and associated microstructures are presented from a variety of rock types and localities in the metamorphic terrains of the northeastern United States.
At Islesboro, Maine cleavage is well developed in lower greenschist grade siltstones and interbedded pelites of lower Paleozoic age. Cleavage in the siltstone units consists of two types of discrete mica films: short film segments and lengthened mica film. Thick secondary mica-rich layers are also exhibited in some siltstones. The short film segments appear to be basic elements through which cleavage development progresses by a linkage process that is poorly understood. The linkage of these …

Grade and facies of contact metamorphism were defined. The Snake River Plain basalts were also mapped. The sources of these flows were determined where possible. Preexisting structures and relationships of vents to earlier faulting were explored in ascertaining extensions of the Great Rift Zone into the Pioneer Mountains. Petrographic descriptions …

The Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Columbia River Basalt In The Hood River Valley, Oregon, Susan Timm Jan 1979

The Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Columbia River Basalt In The Hood River Valley, Oregon, Susan Timm

Dissertations and Theses

The Hood River Valley, located 100 kilometers east of Portland, Oregon, is in the transition zone between two geologic provinces--the High Cascades and the Columbia Plateau. The entire valley is probably underlain by Columbia River Basalt, but it crops out only on steep hillsides and in stream valleys. The base of the basalt is not exposed in the thesis area. The basalt is overlain by Pliocene and Quaternary basalt and andesite, volcanic sediments and glacial debris.

The stratigraphy of the Columbia River Basalt is useful in determining the path of the basalt flows into western Oregon, in mapping the structure …

Lithostratigraphy Of The Cane Hill Member Of The Hale Formation (Type Morrowan), Northwest Arkansas, Robert T. Liner

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Hale Formation (lower Morrowan Series) is a sequence of sandstones and shales divided into the Cane Hill(lower) and Prairie Grove Members. In Washington County, Arkansas, the type Cane Hill consists predominantly of interbedded fine-grained, noncalcareous sandstones and silty shales often with a pebble conglomerate at its base. The member rests unconformably on Chesterian Strata of either the Pitkin Formation or underlying Fayetteville Formation, and it is unconformably overlain by the Prairie Grove Member. In Washington County, the Cane Hill exhibits a slight thickening trend to the south and east. Interpretation of sedimentary structures indicates that the Cane Hill was …

Uranium Transport In The Walker River Basin, California And Nevada, Larry Benson, D. L. Leach Jan 1979

Uranium Transport In The Walker River Basin, California And Nevada, Larry Benson, D. L. Leach

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

During the summer of 1976 waters from tributaries, rivers, springs and wells were sampled in the Walker River Basin. Snow and sediments from selected sites were also sampled. All samples were analyzed for uranium and other elements. The resulting data provide an understanding of the transport of uranium within a closed hydrologic basin as well as providing a basis for the design of geochemical reconnaissance studies for the Basin and Range Province of the Western United States. Spring and tributary data are useful in locating areas containing anomalous concentrations of uranium. However, agricultural practices obscure the presence of known uranium …

Hydrogeologic Investigation Of A Landfill Site In Washington County, Arkansas, Albert E. Ogden, Carlos J. Quintana Jan 1979

Hydrogeologic Investigation Of A Landfill Site In Washington County, Arkansas, Albert E. Ogden, Carlos J. Quintana

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A proposed landfill site near Wheeler, Washington Co., Arkansas, was investigated for its hydrogeologic suitability. The site is located on the highly fractured, cavernous, and cherty Boone Ls. The site is a small upland valley 4500 ft. north of Clear Creek. The valley containing the proposed site is a karst dry valley in which precipitation rapidly infiltrates, recharging the water table and local springs. The water table around the site was mapped to determine the hydraulic gradient and direction of ground-water movement. The water table slopes in a SE direction from the landfill towards Clear Creek with a steep hydraulic …

Petrology Of Metadiabase Intrusions In The White Rock Quadrangle, Western North Carolina, Dale M. Burton

Online Theses and Dissertations

The White Rock quadrangle is located in extreme west central North Carolina, at the northwest edge of the Blue Ridge thrust sheet. The geology of the north-central ninth of the quadrangle was mapped during this study. This map area primarily consists of Precambrian granitic gneisses of the Blue Ridge thrust sheet that are separated from metasedimentary rocks of the Wilhite Formation of the Ocoee Series by the Devils Fork fault.

Of the six metadiabase bodies mapped by Keith (1904) in the White Rock quadrangle, only three definitely contain outcrops of metadiabase. These bodies were metamorphosed to the chlorite and biotite …

Estuarine Fluid Mud : Its Behavior And Accumulation, Maynard M. Nichols, Richard Faas, Galen Thompson Jan 1979

Estuarine Fluid Mud : Its Behavior And Accumulation, Maynard M. Nichols, Richard Faas, Galen Thompson

Reports

A study of fluid mud in Virginia estuaries was conducted to determine how the mud accumulates in a dynamic tidal flow regime. The mud occurs as lenses and blanket deposits in zones of fast sedimentation, i.e. on channel floors and in the turbidity maximum zone. Viscosity measurements indicate resuspension potential of the mud is greater in the turbidity maximum than elsewhere.

On The Water Masses Of Norfolk Canyon, Evon Paul Ruzecki Jan 1979

On The Water Masses Of Norfolk Canyon, Evon Paul Ruzecki

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Results from four cruises in the outer continental shelf/slope region of the Middle Atlantic Bight demonstrate the effect of Norfolk Canyon, an east coast submarine canyon, on the exchange of local water masses. Seasonal distributions of water masses and water types around the canyon were determined from closely spaced (2-5 km) hydrographic and XBT stations. Five component water types representing shelf, winter (or cold pool), slope, warm Western North Atlantic and cool Western North Atlantic waters are defined by specific T/S signatures. The percent of each water type necessary to achieve measured T/S values along sections to the north and …

The Virginia Chesapeake Bay: Recent Sedimentation And Paleodrainage, Michael J. Carron Jan 1979

The Virginia Chesapeake Bay: Recent Sedimentation And Paleodrainage, Michael J. Carron

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A comparison of the bathymetric surveys of the 1850-series and 1950-series indicated an average sedimentation rate for the Virginia Chesapeake Bay of 0.55 m (1.81 ft) for the last century. A statistically significant relationship between the depth of water and the rate of sedimentation was found where high rates of sedimentation exist in extremely shallow water (0 to 2 m) and in intermediate depths (6 to 13 m), while low rates exist between 2 m and 6 m, and in some cases in water deeper than 13 m. The results of 900 km of continuous seismic reflection profiles taken in …

Quaternary Geology And Stratigraphy Of Kitsap County, Washington, Jerald D. Deeter Jan 1979

Quaternary Geology And Stratigraphy Of Kitsap County, Washington, Jerald D. Deeter

WWU Graduate School Collection

New radiocarbon dates and stratigraphic evidence indicate correlations between stratigraphic units on Whidbey Island and in Kitsap County. Eight new C14 dates and five previous dates, together with the stratigraphic position of units and similarities in their composition, support the concept that the Double Bluff Drift, Whidbey Formation, and possibly Possession Drift, extend south of Whidbey Island into Kitsap County.

In Kitsap County, fine-grained floodplain deposits of the Whidbey Formation, with radiocarbon dates beyond the limits of conventional laboratory methods, are located at higher elevations than adjacent floodplain deposits of the Olympia nonglacial interval. This stratigraphic relationship suggest that …

Coastal Zone Processes And Geomorphology Of Skagit County, Washington, Ralph Francis Keuler Jan 1979

Coastal Zone Processes And Geomorphology Of Skagit County, Washington, Ralph Francis Keuler

WWU Graduate School Collection

Geomorphic mapping of 130 km of marine shoreline in Skagit County reveals repeated morphologic and sedimentologic trends along many segments of the coast. The shoreline segments within which the trends are repeated are the littoral drift cells or shore drift sectors that act as nearly closed systems with respect to longshore sediment transport. The longshore trends include changes in mean grain size of beaches, sediment sorting, foreshore morphology, back- shore width and morphology, bluff morphology, and mean beach slope. The last parameter, slope, can be used as an index or surrogate measure of simultaneous changes in the other longshore trends. …

A Paleocurrent Analysis Of A Portion Of The Chuckanut Depositional Basin Near Bellingham, Washington, James Norman Hartwell Jan 1979

A Paleocurrent Analysis Of A Portion Of The Chuckanut Depositional Basin Near Bellingham, Washington, James Norman Hartwell

WWU Graduate School Collection

The Chuckanut Formation is an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary sequence of conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, and some coal deposited by streams near Bellingham, in western Whatcom County, Washington. Paleocurrent analysis of an area in the northwestern portion of the Chuckanut Formation shows two stream directions: to the south or southeast for the lower and middle sections and to the west or northwest for the upper section of the unit. Distinct differences in the lithology of clasts in the conglomerates support this conclusion. Angular phyllitic and quartz clasts in the lower and middle sections probably were derived locally from the Barrington …

Stratigraphy And Petrology Of The Nooksack Group In The Glacier Creek-Skyline Divide Area, North Cascades, Washington, Jon Niels Sondergaard Jan 1979

Stratigraphy And Petrology Of The Nooksack Group In The Glacier Creek-Skyline Divide Area, North Cascades, Washington, Jon Niels Sondergaard

WWU Graduate School Collection

The 6-7 kilometer thick Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous Nooksack Group is divided informally into four units on the basis of lithology. The basal unit consists of tuffaceous sandstone and keratophyric tuff with minor intercalations of argillite and intermediate crystalline volcanic rocks. The lower unit is composed of interbedded black argillite and volcaniclastic sandstone. The middle unit consists of thick-bedded volcaniclastic sandstone and coarse, sedimentary breccia with minor argillite. The upper unit is comprised of interbedded black argillite and volcaniclastic sandstone.

Lithologies and sedimentary structures within these units suggest: (1) the lower and upper units represent depositional lobe deposits of a middle …
