Texture, Fabric And Composition Of Fine-Grained Terrigenous Sediments From The Graneros Member Of The Mancos Shale, San Juan Basin, New Mexico, Anthony J. Skeryanc

Petrography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), porosity and permeability, radiography, x-ray diffraction (clay mineralogy), whole rock wet chemistry and organic analysis are used to examine the texture, fabric and composition of fine-grained terrigenous sediments from the Graneros Member of the Mancos Shale, San Juan Basin, New Mexico. Grain content is highly variable and determines the configuration of the fabric during compaction. A scale of the degree of parallel orientation is compared to grain content and reveals a decrease in parallelism with an increase in grain content. Grain content also affects permeability, thus controlling he degree of authigenic mineralization. Although clay composition …

The condition of water resources in the rural Andean community of Berlin, Colombia, was explored for the purpose of future development in the area. Through investigation of water acquisition techniques, use, and water discharge methods, combined with analysis of chemical water quality tests, the overall pattern of water resources in the study area was revealed. Although the methods of acquiring water were not found to be especially damaging to water quality, the use, and more importantly, the methods of discharging waste water suggested a water resource base harboring certain questionable qualities. Twelve samples from Kohala volcano, Hawaii were selected for chemical analyses and electron microprobe study. Seven of the samples are from the Pololu volcanic series. Three of these samples are tholeiitic basalts, two are oceanites, and two are alkali olivine basalts transitional to hawaiite. The five samples from the Hawi volcanic series include one hawaiite, two mugearites, and two benmoreites. Electron microprobe study of the minerals in the basaltic matrix of the two oceanites reveal that one of the oceanites was derived from a tholeiitic magma while the other was derived from an alkalic magma. Thirty three species of ammonites are recorded from the composite type section of the Weberg Member of the Snowshoe Formation in the Suplee area, Grant County, Oregon. Holcophylloceras burkei, Euhoploceras westi, E. tubereulosum and Strigoceras taylori are described as new, while four new species belonging to the genera Sonninia [?], Bradfordia, Pseudotoites and Witchellia are not formally named. Three ammonite zonules characterize the ammonite sequence of the type Weberg composite section. The sequence correlates with parts of the standard lower and middle Bajocian (Jurassic) of northwestern Europe. Large volume (80 liter) water samples were collected from five sites on four streams in the New River Basin of Tennessee for study of the suspended sediment. Parameters selected for investigation were:
(1) Sediment size distribution
(2) Mineral composition of the sediment
(3) Metal content of the sediment
(4) Extractable Fe-Mn Oxide content of the sediment
(5) Association of heavy metals with Fe-Mn oxides
Sediment was separated by gravity settling and continuous flow centrifugation. Size separations showed that most of the sediment was in the 2-5μm size range and 0.2-2μm particles were second most abundant in most samples regardless of …

A detailed investigation of selected textural and mineralogical aspects of tills in southwestern Michigan is used to define an interlobe boundary relationship between the Wisconsinan ice of the Lake Michigan and Saginaw lobes. Bedrock underlying the study area contributed little to the bulk composition of the tils investigated. However, morainal development in the study area shows strong correlation with bedrock topography.
In a discussion of the deglaciation of Michigan and the study area, a history of morainal development is reviewed and attention is focused on the reentrant district located in Kalamazoo and neighboring counties. Attempts to delineate tills of the …

Three electrical resistivity exploration programs have been made at areas of known but unassessed geothermal resources in the Rio Grande rift and Basin and Range province of southern New Mexico: Radium Springs Known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA), Las Alturas Estates, and Lightning Dock KGRA. The experiments are the framework for a thorough reconnaissance electrical evaluation of these geothermal resource areas. A preliminary experiment was made at Rio Rancho Estates, near Albuquerque, in order to evaluate the applicability and resolution of electrical methods in an area of known subsurface geology within the Rio Grande rift. Thirty six sediment cores were collected during August, 1976 and January, 1977 in order to examine the relationships between dissolved organic carbon and total dissolved mercury in the interstitial water of two marshes located near Windmill Point, James River, 16 km downstream from Hopewell, Virginia. The Windmill Point marsh development site is a dredged material disposal island in the James River. The reference marsh which does not contain dredged material, is located 2.3 km upstream at Ducking Stool Point.
The concentrations of dissolved organic carbon and total dissolved mercury showed no significant difference between the two marshes. Trends in the …

Boulders of shonkinite, syenodiorite, and nepheline monzoni te occur on Kauai, Hawaii. Boulders of shonkinite and syenodiorite outcrop 1 mile north of Kalaheo and nepheline monzonite boulders have been found in Wailooa Canyon along Koaie and Waialae streams. Detailed petrographic and bulk-rock and mineral geochemical study of samples collected from each locality suggest crystallization in supercooled nephelinic magmas. Shonkinite probably formed after a moderate degree of supercooling, syenodiorite after a high degree of supercooling, and nepheline monzonite after minimal supercooling. Shonkinite, syenodiorite, and nepheline monzonite probably crystallized in hypabyssal magma chambers beneath vents for Koloa Volcanic Group lavas.

The state gravity maps of Oregon and Washington show a gravity high centered south of Portland, Oregon and a gravity low in the Tualatin Valley to the west disrupting the regional gravity gradient which is controlled by crustal thickening. Detailed gravity surveys done in the Portland area are consistent with the state gravity maps but show considerably more detail. Quantitative interpretation of this data has provided new information on the subsurface structure in this area; recent work has yielded corroborative evidence for a fault zone bounding the east side of the Portland Hills, and has indicated the presence of faults …

Dissertations and Theses
Topics in geology, which inevitably excite professional discussion and even tempered debate, often present challenging targets for the exploratory jabs of Master's degree candidates. The Portland Hills Silt and the controversy concerning its genesis provides just such an object.
Although the physical descriptions of the silt are generally in agreement, they remain somewhat generalized and, at present, no single definition is generally accepted. Moreover, incongruities concerning structural and textural details--notably, the presence of minor stratification and/or scattered pebbles in the silt--have resulted in considerable disagreement regarding its mode of origin.

The Mississippian (Kinderhookian-Osagean) Lodgepole Formation contains a diverse fossil assemblage. Taxa present include brachiopods, crinoids, gastropods, cephalopods, trilobites and corals. Corals and associated fauna were collected from four localities within the Bear River Range. These are, from north to south, Beirdneau Hollow, Spring Hollow, Leatham Hollow and Porcupine Dam. The well-preserved tabulate and rugose (compound and solitary) corals exhibit a high degree of morphologic variability. The colonial corals of the Lodgepole Formation (particularly Lithostrotionella, Syringopora) exhibit a morphologic gradient from platy to hemispherical forms. The late Mississippian Great Blue Limestone was studied at four locations around Cache Valley, Utah. One location was at Dry Lake in the Pisgah Hills to the west of Cache Valley. Three locations were in the Bear River Range to the east of Cache Valley. From north to south the locations are: 1) Beirdneau Peak, 2) Logan Peak, and 3) the ridge to the north of East Fork Canyon. Discontinuous Pleistocene pond deposits occur along the valley sides of Dankworth Canyon southeast of Lewellen, Nebraska. At one locality the beds exposed in a channel-fill up to six feet thick consist of sand-sized carbonate-rich sediments deposited in alter nating light and dark layers resembling varves. Microscopic examination of disaggregated samples reveals that most of the sediment consists of sand and silt often cemented into tubes. Other components include several kinds of freshwater ostracodes, gastropods, charophyte gyrogonites, and bone-like debris probably from fish.

The area of southern Elkhorn Mountain, a previously unmapped area, is located north of Malad City, Idaho, in the Bannock Range. The mapped area is within the Basin and Range province. The mapped area measures 5.9 miles in the north-south direction and approximately 8.8 miles in the east-west direction.
The oldest stratigraphic unit, in the mapped area, is the Ute Formation of Middle Cambrian age. Other units of Cambrian age, in ascending order, are: Blacksmith Formation, Bloomington Formation, Nounan Formation, and St. Charles Formation. The units of Ordovician age are the Garden City and the Swan Peak Formations. The youngest …

This report is the result of detailed mapping of a part of the northern Mount Taylor volcanic field of west-central New Mexico. More than 100 volcanic vents were mapped, including 8 maars, 5 pit craters, and 15 distinct trachyte flow domes. Three successive periods of volcanism were identified: (1) Tapia stage (pre-Mount Taylor, 3.26± .20 m.y.): an alkali basalt-trachyte suite, identified here for the first time on the North American continent; includes basanitoid, hawaiite, mugearite, benmorite and trachyte. Of these, the trachyte is the most voluminous (about 3 km3), the basanitoid and hawaiite (''early basalt") the least …

Middle And Upper Eocene Biostratigraphy (Foraminifera) Of The Cascade Head Area, Lincoln And Tillamook Counties, Oregon, Arden D. Callender Jr.

An almost complete sequence of middle and upper marine strata, informally designated in this study as the "Strata of Cascade Head", has yielded 334 species and varieties of fossil Foraminifera. The Foraminifera were collected from 38 localities in four stratigraphic sections measured along the Salmon River, Neskowin Creek, Cascade Head Road, and near the town of Three Rocks in the central Oregon Coast Range.
