Stereoradiography As Applied To Problems Of Petrology., Martin Goldstone Jan 1963

Stereoradiography As Applied To Problems Of Petrology., Martin Goldstone

Masters Theses

"Stereoscopic examination of radiographs of rock and ore samples allows a rapid, cursory determination of texture and structure without time consuming preparation and use of thin sections. In addition, volumetric estimates of known mineral components can be made providing they possess significantly different x-ray absorption characteristics.

Stereoscopic effect was most pronounced for specimens having well defined components of structure such as bedding, banding, lineation, inclusions, textural variations and moderate to large x-ray absorption differences. In general, these conditions were best met by ores or ore minerals with their related gangue minerals.

Stereoscopic examination was not successful in revealing twinning or …

Pelecypoda From The Lower Fox Hills Formation (Upper Cretaceous) Of Emmons County, North Dakota, Rodney M. Feldmann Jan 1963

Pelecypoda From The Lower Fox Hills Formation (Upper Cretaceous) Of Emmons County, North Dakota, Rodney M. Feldmann

Theses and Dissertations

The Fox Hills Formation in Emmons County, North Dakota, consists of 250-350 feet of medium to fine grained sand and sandstone with some shale interbeds. In Emmons County, the four members, Trail City, Timer Lake, Bullhead(?), and Colgate are not as distinct lithologically as they are in the areas from which they were described; thus, the unit has been subdivided into a lower part consisting of crossbedded sand and sandstone with calcareous, fossiliferous concretions and an upper part consisting of interbeds of buff sand and chocolate shale.

The gradational change from Pierre Shale lithology to the sands of the overlying …

The Structural And Stratigraphic Relationships In The Paleozoic Rocks Of Eastern North Dakota, Frederick V. Ballard Jan 1963

The Structural And Stratigraphic Relationships In The Paleozoic Rocks Of Eastern North Dakota, Frederick V. Ballard

Theses and Dissertations

The thickness and areal extent of the commonly defined Paleozoic rock units in eastern North Dakota has been determined by a study of mechanical well logs. Isopachous wops of these units reveal several positive areas which persisted and influenced sedimentation and unit thickness throughout most of the Paleozoic Era. Precambrian topographic highs of either erosional or structural origin produced those influences in early Paleozoic time, whereas later effects resulted from periodic structural rejuvenation of the original highs. The activity of those highs appears to be related to the location of the basin depocenter. The most prominent highs were in Cavalier, …

A Paleontological Study Of The Gunflint Microfossil Assemblage, J. William Schopf Jan 1963

A Paleontological Study Of The Gunflint Microfossil Assemblage, J. William Schopf

Honors Papers

Precambrian microfossils discovered in nonferruginous charts of the lower "algal" members of the Gunflint formation of southern Ontario are of great interest in the evolutionary scheme of primitive life. The environment of deposition of the deposit, and the indigenous and biogenic nature of the microfossil assemblage are considered. A discussion of the small but diversified assemblage, including twelve micro-forms, seven of which have not previously been reported, is presented.

Pegmatites Of The Anderson Ridge Quadrangle, Fremont County, Wyoming, Hassan A. Etr Jan 1963

The Location Of Underground Points By Means Of A Magnetic Dipole, Anthony Del Prete Jr. Jan 1963

The Location Of Underground Points By Means Of A Magnetic Dipole, Anthony Del Prete Jr.

Masters Theses

"The object of this study was to design, construct, and test an electromagnet that could, from an underground location, generate a magnetic field which could be located at the surface, and that was portable enough to be carried through a cave. This could then be used to locate points in a cave relative to the surface.

A 20 foot solenoid composed of four five-foot sections was built and magnetized by a lightweight rechargeable four-cell eight volt battery. The total weight of the equipment was 30 pounds.

The magnet was calibrated by erecting it and measuring its vertical intensity with a …

Sedimentary Petrography And Environments Of Deposition Of The Plattin Group, Cliffdale Hollow, Jefferson County, Missouri., Narendra M. Naiknimbalkar

Masters Theses

"Petrographic and depositional environments studies were completed on selected Plattin Limestone rock-samples from the Drill-cores of Cliffdale Hollow area, Jefferson County, Missouri.

Petrographic analysis of forty-four thin sections and the detailed megascopic study of the samples revealed the different types of limestone rocks which were classified on the basis of Folk's (1959) Carbonate Classification. As to the environments of deposition of the Plattin Limestone determined by petrographic study, it has been concluded that this environment was one of low to medium agitation and low to medium organic activity.

Chemical analysis of the Plattin Limestone samples revealed the presence of the …

Fossil And Recent Beryciform Otoliths: An Adjunct To Ichthyological Classification., C. Kurt. Lamber Jan 1963

Fossil And Recent Beryciform Otoliths: An Adjunct To Ichthyological Classification., C. Kurt. Lamber

Masters Theses

"Otoliths are calcareous bodies, of consistent form, secreted in the auditory labyrinths of some higher fishes. Of three pairs, only the taxonomically important earstones (sagittae) are considered here. Specifically, this study is restricted to the sagittae of beryciform fishes (Order Beryciformes). Removal of some taxa from the order, and the possible relating of others, is suggested.

The morphology of beryciform sagittae is described, and three basic supra-familial groups are recognized. Diagnostic characters for families are given, with diagnoses of genera added. Sagittae of characteristic species are illustrated.

Otoliths of fossil beryciform fishes, as known from specimens and published illustrations, are …

Hydrogeology Of Reservoir Sites In The Meramec River Basin, Missouri., John H. Anderson Jan 1963

Hydrogeology Of Reservoir Sites In The Meramec River Basin, Missouri., John H. Anderson

Masters Theses

"Governmental and private agencies have proposed construction of multiple purpose dams in the Meramec River Basin for flood control, conservation, recreation and possible power development. Evaluation of the effects of reservoirs created by these dams on ground water conditions has not been published. Study of possible effects led to the thesis that prediction of changes in ground water conditions could be made.

Several limited applications of ground water geology techniques to the problem of reservoir-ground water relations were studied; no thorough previous studies were found. Apparently, complete studies have not been undertaken by even the larger agencies.

Inspection of the …

Geology Of The Northern Half Of The Ellington Quadrangle Missouri., Robert Charles. Thornton Jan 1963

Geology Of The Northern Half Of The Ellington Quadrangle Missouri., Robert Charles. Thornton

Masters Theses

"Geologic mapping has been completed for the northern half of the Ellington Quadrangle, Missouri. Rocks exposed in the thesis area are Precambrian and Paleozoic in age. The Precambrian rocks are granites and felsite. The Paleozoic rocks include the Potosi and Eminence Formations, of Upper Cambrian age, and the Gasconade Formation of Ordovician age. Distinction between the Potosi and Eminence Formations is difficult because of conformable and transitional relationships. In the thesis area sufficient evidence was available to separate the dolomites of the Potosi and Eminence as mappable units. This mapping should be useful as a basis for more detailed geologic …

Geology Of The Sedillo-Cedro Canyon Area, Bernallio County, New Mexico, Bert Norman Brown Jun 1962

Geology Of The Sedillo-Cedro Canyon Area, Bernallio County, New Mexico, Bert Norman Brown

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

This report was undertaken primarily as a study of Pennsylvanian strata which crop out in the Sedillo-Cedro Canyon area. The subdivision of the Madera formation as proposed by Read and others (1944) was adopted for purposes of mapping. This subdivision is based on a dominance of either limestone or clastic rocks in the formation.

The writer was unable to measure a Pennsylvanian section in the field due to thickness changes, facies gradations, and faults which were often concealed by dense soil cover. However, by visually traversing the area on aerial photographs using arbitrarily chosen zones, estimated thicknesses for the members …

Hypogene Zoning In The Lordsburg Mine District, Hidalgo County, New Mexico, K. F. Clark May 1962

Hypogene Zoning In The Lordsburg Mine District, Hidalgo County, New Mexico, K. F. Clark

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Although descriptions of the Lordsburg mining district have been in the literature for more than fifty years, no reference to hypogene zoning of the ores has been made. The present work is mainly concerned with hypogene zoning and related phenomena. Hypogene zoning, temperature of formation, and paragenesis are interrelated factors in ores differentiated from magmas. All three processes are discussed in this thesis. Other aspects of the mining district are mentioned only where relevant.
