Foraminifera From Outcrops Of The Pierre Shale (Upper Cretaceous) Of North Dakota, Everett E. Wilson Jan 1958

Foraminifera From Outcrops Of The Pierre Shale (Upper Cretaceous) Of North Dakota, Everett E. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

In North Dakota the Pierre shale was deposited in all portions of the State except the southeastern corner, where it was either never deposited or removed by pre-Pleistocene erosion. In the western part of North Dakota the Pierre is overlain by later Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments, but to the east of the Missouri River, where it forms the bedrock, it is mantled by glacial drift. However, numerous exposures of the Pierre are present, generally in road cuts and river valleys of the southwestern and northeastern corners of the State. More scattered outcrops occur along Beaver Creek and the Missouri River …

Detection Of Buried Basement Highs By Airphoto Drainage Pattern Analysis, Reynolds And Wayne Counties, Missouri, Papken Aram Zarzavatjian

Masters Theses

"Purpose and Scope: The purpose of this study is to determine if it is possible to detect buried Precambrian igneous hills in Wayne County and the larger part of Reynolds County in southeast Missouri by the use of aerial photo drainage pattern analysis.

The St. Francis Mountains are located in southeast Missouri. They form a part of the Precambrian basement complex, and have been exposed at the surface by the erosion of the lower Paleozoic sediments which covered them. Some of the hills which make up the St. Francis Mountains are exposed to a great degree, while others still have …

The Mineralogy And Paragenesis Of The Lone Star Deposit, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, Lawrence K. Lustig

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Lone Star deposit is located in La Bajada Canyon in western Santa Fe County, New Mexico. The exposed sedimentary rocks of the area range in age from the Cretaceous to recent. Four unconformities are present which are the result of erosional levels established during the Tertiary. The host rock of the deposit is the Cieneguilla liburgite formation. The Cieneguilla consists mainly of thin embedded limburgite flows and conglomerate of Miocene age. The Lone Star deposit lies in this conglomerate at a depth of approximately 150 feet from the top of the Cieneguilla.

A Study Of The Charles-Mission Canyon Contact, David H. Dahlem Jun 1957

A Study Of The Charles-Mission Canyon Contact, David H. Dahlem

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This study is an attempt to define criteria for picking the Charles-Mission Canyon contact from well-cuttings logs, electric logs and radio-active logs; and all findings are discussed, whether positive or negative. Correlation by electric log was successful from the Cut Bank area to the Cedar Creek anticline but sample logs from the same wells do not agree. The conclusions reached is the point to the unreliability of the sample logs based on well-outtings data.

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Tecolote Hills in the north-central Lincoln County, New Mexico, consist of Permian, Triassic, and Cretaceous sedimentary strata intruded by early Tertiary (?) sills, dikes, and laccoliths. A partial section of the Permian Yeso formation, measured thickness 380 feet, is exposed and is overlain conformably by the Glorieta sandstone member of Permian San Andres formation. This sandstone thins, at least locally, to the south and intertongues with San Andres limestone. The maximum thickness of the Glorieta sandstone is about 215 feet. It is overlain by a 300-foot thickness of San Andres rocks, further divisible into a lower limestone member and …

Medial Pleistocene Fossil Vertebrate Localities In Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner Jan 1957

Medial Pleistocene Fossil Vertebrate Localities In Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum

The accurate geologic dating of Pleistocene vertebrate localities which occur outside the glaciated regions has always been difficult. Several new fossil localities in Nebraska now provide data for a better understanding of the paleoecology and faunal evidence of the medial Pleistocene of the Great Plains region.

A fossil quarry, containing the remains of both vertebrates and invertebrates, has been discovered in south-central Nebraska (11/2 miles south and west of Angus in Nuckolls County). The fossils are preserved in Sappa silts in a lime concentration zone (C horizon) of a Yarmouth paleosol. The calcium carbonate appears to have been responsible for …

A Geological Study Of The Irvine Ranch Area, Johnson And Campbell Counties, Wyoming, Gale E. Butterfield

Masters Theses

"The discovery of uranium in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming, by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1952 has lead to an extensive exploration program throughout the region by both private and governmental agencies. This report is a geological study of an area in the southwestern part of the basin.

Geological and radiometric mapping carried out as a part of this report indicated several areas of uranium occurrence. Some of these occurrences warrant tests by drilling.

Mineralogical and petrographic study has shown the principal uranium minerals to be carnotite and metatyuyamunite. The mineralization occurs in arkosic sandstones. Assays of the …

Gastropoda From The Pierre Shale (Upper Cretaceous) Of Emmons County, South-Central North Dakota, Alan M. Cvancara Jan 1957

Gastropoda From The Pierre Shale (Upper Cretaceous) Of Emmons County, South-Central North Dakota, Alan M. Cvancara

Theses and Dissertations

Fossil gastropods were studied from the upper part of the Pierre shale (Upper Cretaceous) in Emmons County, south-central North Dakota. This primary purpose of this study was to figure all gastropods found and bring the nomenclature of up to date. Secondly, an attempt was made to determine whether these fossil gastropods could be used in defining the contact between the Pierre shale and overlying Fox Hills sandstone.

Little paleontological work has been done on Pierre gastropods in North Dakota. Identification previously made seem to have been done somewhat hurriedly from Meek (1876) with little regard to modernizing the nomenclature.

These …
