The Mineralogy Of The Grassy Creek And Saverton Formations, Dirk Pieter Van Duym Jan 1954

The Mineralogy Of The Grassy Creek And Saverton Formations, Dirk Pieter Van Duym

Masters Theses

"A study of the mineralogy of the Grassy Creek and Saverton formations of Northeast Missouri was undertaken to determine whether a division is justified, as proposed by some stratigraphers, of these argillaceous beds into two formations. The formations were sampled systematically at surface exposures on the northeast limb of the Lincoln Arch in the vicinity of Hannibal and Louisiana, Missouri. The samples were investigated mineralogically in the laboratory. Previous studies showed that the fossils of the Grassy Creek and Saverton beds were virtually identical. The present study demonstrates that the Grassy Creek and Saverton beds are too near alike in …

The Lucky Hit Mine Of Jefferson County, Montana, Bruce B. Goddard

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Many mines in the Cardwell Mining District have been more or less steady producers of gold, silver, lead and zinc since 18SO. The area first came into prominence with the discovery of gold at the Mayflower Mine in 1896. Soon after the Mayflower discovery, many claims were located in the nearby Saint Paul Gulch area, northeast of Whitehall. The Lucky Hit Mine is located in Saint Paul Gulch area of the Cardwell Mining District.

The Construction And Operation Of A Universal Specimen Mount With Protective Lead Shield For The Purpose Of Determining Pole Figures Using The Schulz-Decker Transmission Technique, Richard L. Fausner

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

It was the purpose of this study to construct a universal mount, to construct a protective lead shield, to operate the instrument, and to provide a pole figure using the transmission method of Schulz and Decker. There are at present several lengthy x-ray methods of determining the grain orientation of metals. These methods are mainly photographic. In order to provide a rapid means of obtaining the necessary information concerning the grain orientation of a metal, a universal mount was constructed.

Rock and mineral specimens were studied with the aid of a hand lens, and the oil immersion method was used to identify some minerals. No thin sections were made. Sedimentary rocks were mapped to complete the geologic picture. No detailed sedimentary sections were measured as emphasis was placed on the Cenozoic igneous …

The Flotation Concentration Of A Complex Low-Grade Lead Zinc Ore, Edward James Fong May 1953

The Flotation Concentration Of A Complex Low-Grade Lead Zinc Ore, Edward James Fong

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This report is concerned primarily with the beneficiation of a low-grade complex lead-zinc ore. The depletion of high grade veins has caused the mineral engineer to seek deposits deeper in the earth's crust or to find lower grade deposits. The other alternative has placed more research problems on Mineral Dressing Engineers in particularly the iron, copper, lead and zinc fields.

Stratigraphy And Paleontology Of The Carboniferous Rocks Of The Cedro Canyon Area, Manzanita Mountains, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Ernest Szabo

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The discovery of an extension into the Cedro Canyon area, in the northern Manzanita Mountains, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, of strata similar in lithology and stratigraphic position to known pre-Pennsylvanian rocks of nearby areas is included in this report. No diagnostic fossils have been found in these newly discovered strata and therefore definite age assignment can not be made.

The Pennsylvanian strata are dominantly marine and exhibit unusual lighologic variations. These variations are attributed to the environment of a transgressing sea on an unstable shelf.

Measured sections indicate that it is possible to subdivide these strata according to series on …

The Huego (Gym) Limestone, Luna County, New Mexico, Lowell E. Bogart

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Southwestern New Mexico is characterized by Basin and Range Physiography. Nearly level bolson plains are interrupted irregularly by linear mountain ranges. Sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Cambrian and recent crop out in the mountain areas. Darton (1916) mapped and described a limestone formation, about 1,000 feet thick, which he named Gym limestone. He thought the Gym was restricted in outcrop to Luna County and was distinct from previously described Paleozoic formations. The Gym was originally thought to be Pennsylvanian in age but later on was regarded as Permian. In the restudy of the Gym limestone was the basis of …

The Structural Geology Of The Cerrillos Hills Area, New Mexico, Alan E. Disbrow May 1953

The Structural Geology Of The Cerrillos Hills Area, New Mexico, Alan E. Disbrow

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The earliest major structural deformation recorded in rocks exposed in the Cerrillos area occurred during the Laramie uplift of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This resulted in an erosional wedging of Upper Cretaceous strata at a rate of 130 feet per mile. Subsequent deposition of the Eocene Galisteo sand, clay, and gravel overstepped this surface in a sourceward direction.

At the beginning of work on this project the major problem was to determine the geological structure of the Cerrillos Hills. It was felt that a large-scale geologic map of an area extensive enough to reveal the structurally complex center of …
